Yeah for 33 years as Darren said, and over saw 4 FA Cup victories. Not a bad stint, almost 30% of our history! Bloody hell, the bloke deserves some recognition!
He only did administrative work plus wages and transfer dealings. What about Arnold Newton and Keith Walker then?

So did Derek Dooley and he has a statue in the car park.

Prior to 'managers' being the focal point of clubs the secretary oversaw things - was head of the committee that picked the team, did wages, transfer dealings. Probably like a modern day director of football but with more input on team selection. There wasn't as much emphasis on training in those days, so less of a need for a full time hands on approach. So I'd say he was pretty influential in the role he did for over 30 years.

If we had a director of football take over tomorrow, and he helped get us in the top flight for 30 years and win 4 fa cups I'd take that, and he'd deserve some big recognition!

Ok then

In 1989 Denis Clareborough picked his best Blades X1 that was published in a programme (I think it was for the friendly match against Wendy- match ended 0-0 and Carlton Palmer got sent off) and I noticed that he picked Alf Ringstead ahead of Woody for the right wing position. In the mid 1990s I asked Denis why he picked Ringstead ahead of Woody in his best Blades X1. He said Woody was a very good player but felt that Ringstead "was more determined" . I had read that Ringstead had never watched a professional football match before he made his debut for New Brighton! I remember seeing him play golf at Hallowes club whenever I went up there for a walk in the 1990s
Centary Match 0-0 and Palmer got sent off for stamping on Ohhhhhhh AAAhhhhhhhh

No doubt Andy Daykin is a Blade and did sterling work in the commercial department but fell foul of the politics at the time.
As for statutes then this is a controversial subject in my opinion.
There as been plenty of workers/players who have given much to the Blades over the years
UTB.

That's right. From what I can remember, in the 19th and early 20th centuries:

1. The team was selected by a Committee, which was modelled on the Committee that Sheffield United Cricket Club used. They and Nicholson also dealt with transfers and financial matters.

2. George Waller, the trainer, was the de facto manager - in terms of coaching and tactics - from his appointment in the early 1890s to the 1920s. Ernest Needham also had a large influence of these matters.
I gather from folks who recall looking after him, that he died in his 73rd year at Woodland View nursing home, Norton.
Alzheimers.

Who used to coach players in those days?
George Waller (1894 to 1930) , Jack Houseley (1891 to 1909). Harry Johnson snr (1909 to 1934), Bill Brelsford (1925 to 1940), Tom Radcliffe 1930 to 1932), David Steele and Bill Eadie (1934 to 1936), Dugald Livingstone (1936 to 1950), Reg Wright (1936 to 1957)

Some really long spells there.
Now it's a miracle getting 8 years from Bassett and Warnock.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Alf died in 20000.
Wow, fair play to him, that's some age. Wonder if he got to go to either of our Galactic Super Cup finals against Zeta Reticuli Greys and Cosmos Redshift 7 before the earth was consumed by the dying sun? Always nice to know that there are fellow time travellers on here. Let me know if you're going to the 1899 FA Cup final again and we'll meet up and have a grog.
