My issue with Matos is that whenever he does win the ball he always looks to pass it to the nearest United player, even if that player happens to be 5 yards behind him and surrounded by members of the opposing team. He seems to shit himself and take the easy option every time :-(

The importance of doing exactly what you have just stated is not lost on me even though it appears to piss more than a few off.

Not sure that Matos is reliable enough to do even that fwiw.

Weird? Nah. The weird thing is that we thought he was worth a £1.5m gamble.
£1.5m????? We wish!!! Ive heard a lot more and given his age, he came from Chelsea and had played 20 Chanpionship games for Oxford there is no way he only cost £1.5m

Yeah whatever, 20 year old from Chelsea with championship experience signed for 500k 🤣
Wouldn't shock me if it's a smallish fee with add ons like they have just done with Middlesbrough for that lad on loan at Huddersfield which was a million but with add ons weighted in their favour

There will be a huge sell on percentage and possibly add ons, neither of which they’re likely to get.

Thing I find odd about the AIK links - isn’t Sweden a summer league? Why would they be buying players on 5 months loan in Jan?

I'm in a very small minority that is still intrigued by Matos. He's not ready, but I do think there's a player in there.

He's still very, very young in senior football terms.
He needs a load of minutes somewhere, like all youngsters do.

He might not be a DM, but he has something. He's mobile, quick, can tackle, he has basic technical skills.
He lacks IQ and is a bit loose with everything, but I think he could be coached... our old coaches Hecky & McCall could probably get a tune out of him

He’s had loans at Hudds and Oxford but still looks like all he can do is chase the ball.

It’s dumb to write any player off after such a short time, but please show something soon, Alex…

Alfie Gilchrist says hi. Chelsea wanted £10m and settled for £1.5m from West Brom and he’s a player with much greater experience and honours.
Ok cool, what's all the fuss about then?We got what we expected if he only cost 500k so let's all stop criticising him and the recruitment team. In fact id go so far as to say hes good value at half a million!

why on earth is bettis still at our football club?

Probably cos hes very good at his job. And the people who have paid his wages over the years at SUFC under different owners, all recognised that.

He does the negotiating on behalf of the club after transfer targets are identified by others paid to do just that. If anyone is at fault its the player scouting and recruitment side of things. Jamie Hoylands position at the club for example should be getting looked at if he recommended half of the shit we signed in the summer.

Because whoever (Prince) or whatever (consortium) is the owner , they are too distant and have too little interest or knowledge at the operational level.

They just look at the headline figures.

Bettis has lived a charmed life , mainly as Wilder's mate & gofor.

There is no real corporate control over the club in terms of the owner controlling the CEO or the CEO controlling Wilder or other managers.

And now he's been made a Director by the latest lazy owners , there's clearly no intention by them to "get a grip".

Hence some of the mindbending decisions for eye-watering £ on recruitment , contracts , options for Jack Robinson over the club 🤣 etc etc

You can say what you want about Wrexham's owners they attend home matches as much as possible and enjoy the games like a fan! COH nowhere to be seen visually and in print. Have they even appeared in "Programmes £5" yet ?

That you Stephen ? 😛

I think this is more likely to be because the board needed some experience of running a football business on the board.

I am slightly surprised they didn't bring in their own CEO when they took over but a year ago we were in automatic promotion places and looking like we should go up. They wouldn't have rocked the boat on that.

That's a fair point.

As regards the longer term , my observations these last few years have consistently been that Bettis has far too wide a remit for one man.

The area of recruitment , contracts , succession-planning , in which the club lives or dies on its "player-trading" (see the 3 little Bs in the PL) is now so significant that it requires more than just part of a CEO's time.

Which is why a dedicated DoF has been adopted at most clubs.

Sean accuses me of a "Bettis is shit" theme , but that's too simplistic & unfair.
It's more "Bettis needs help".

The Bettis/Wilder axis was extremely successful in our rise 2016-20.
But things only get harder as you rise , as we've found to our cost since 21.

As for the owners , they are far too distant and lack the acumen to steer the club.
They have no concept of what succession planning (structure or personnel) might look like if Steven left & Chris fell under a bus tomorrow.

And yet on another thread just yesterday (Jamie Hoyland thread - post 262 which you put on) you mentioned that i had been 'defending Bettis' who had 'presided over this shitshow'.

You then went onto to talk about incompetents spunking away millions in parachute payments and that SUFC are "run by a bunch of incompetents with all the acumen of a dead slug."

To top it off you then stated that "This is either bent or (if you're if a sympathetic mind) the actions of a clown."

Now we see from you post above today, that the "Bettis is shit" theme is too simplistic & unfair, and that its more a case of Bettis needs help".

Make your mind up. You was the one calling him an incompetent dead slug/clown yesterday. No one else. Now youve decided that that is too simplistic and that he now just needs help. Which is it and what will your views be in another 24 hours then..?

Forgive me, if i think you are talking shite.

Forgive me for getting into hyperbole when I get too distressed about our failing to take advantage of the rare opportunity presented to us in 19/20 , by Wilder's sheer graft and acumen at lower value recruitment.
I honestly don't believe that the present owners , nor any future ones , will fashion another opportunity of that ilk , now the parachutes era is over.

When I look at some of the awful recruitment decisions and try to analyse why we have been - at times - a laughing-stock in the PL , or firing & re-hiring a manager in the Championship , I keep coming back to the lack of structure & governance.

Now that we've embedded Bettis as a director and CW as manager , back to 2016 , it just feels like the concept of progress has been ditched in favour of "the old duo" , mainly because we're now owned by no one who is readily identifiable or "responsible" in the way the Prince was , in the years before he'd given up and wanted out.

Five years of haphazard decline after wasting a golden opportunity must at least beg the question "who's actually running this show ?"
Could it be better run ?
