A disaster of a manager

That’s not quite accurate.

Agree when the season started we weren’t promotion contenders

But we strengthened in the last week on the transfer window. Once the window shut we had the 3rd best, 3rd most expensive squad in the league.

Many neutrals forecast we’d finish in the top 2. I was very consider we’d finish top 3 and finishing 3rd was par for the course based on the strength of our squad.

Even if that's true, it was still way behind Leeds and Burnley so top 2 cannot have been a realistic expectation. Add to that the injury crisis and lack of depth and he worked a miracle to have us anywhere near top 2. He'd genuinely have been better off just coasting along 10 points behind all season.

Early chance to give Sesko a run at home when we're playing well and Amorim puts Zirkzee on to replace injured Cunha!? Fans have stayed behind the manager despite the terrible record. Decisions like that (and not playing Mainoo and Heaton) will lose him the backing. Utterly baffling stubbornness

Sound in any way familiar?
I initially thought you'd gone on the wrong forum to post this. Dafter things have happened on the internet.🙂

I can take losing. But in order to do so I need to see every player in a red and white shirt giving 100% for as long as they're on the pitch. If we do that and we fall short so be it, but maximum effort is the basic requirement for a Sheffield United side in my book.

Not only do I see players not giving 100%, I see players making very basic errors and looking extremely clueless. As has been said, nobody can really tell what then plan is. There's no press, there's pointless and wayward passes, there's no service, barely anything resembling a competent passage of play...it's awful to watch.

I absolutely hate the culture of sacking managers after five minutes ('doing a Watford' essentially) but the problems we're having fall squarely at the feet of the gaffer, and the fact is you don't get the time anymore because so many Championship teams are capable of doing well. The stats and the performances are catastrophic for Selles as it stands.

I feel like he's got two weeks to try and make something, anything click before Ipswich. If that game serves up another 90 minutes of the same, he needs to leave.

When he came he said he was going to play fast attacking football, blah, blah, blah.
He does not have a clue, a disaster of a manager who isn’t able to get a tune out of one of the best squads in the division. The players look confused, unsettled and disorientated.
We have lost 5 on the bounce with no glimmer of it getting better tactically.
Go now!
Any sane blade can see the writing on the wall. Sometimes a club and manager/player are just a bad fit, this is one of those times.

Feels like we've given the Manager's job to someone straight off "The Apprentice". He must have shown a great PowerPoint presentation in his job interview.

We did.

Or do we keep wilder forever and ever?
Just because our current manager isn't much cop doesn't mean we shouldn't have moved on from him.
You’re wasting your time mate.

You’re dealing with people who he might have said hello to, maybe even had a chat.

Because he’s one of us (in fairness he is) it gets him a free pass. Whereas in reality it like saying because I like burgers I should be CEO of Burger King.

We won’t ever move on because we are as parochial as fuck

I’m not saying Selles is the man for us, but sometimes we have to be careful what we wish for.
There have been many calls for Wilder to return, but over his time in charge there were many times when everybody wanted Wilder gone.
Have to admire Selles standing in front of the team, taking the abuse from the fans. Would say there are many managers who wouldn’t do this. Also he took the abuse that should have been aimed at the players. That’s what you called a proper manager. He has not been critical of individual players as far as I am aware. Just possibly some of the players need to look at themselves. They are professional and should be able to put passes together and score goals. These players are paid wages way above my working life pay scale
He is the scapegoat for the owners who have hired him but not given him the tools to do the job.,can’t just rely on Harmer, o hare and Cooper, there are another 8 players on the pitch. Last minute buys and loan of players, generally mean all the better players have gone elsewhere. Plus some of our Academy players are being found out.
Not sure if he will still be our manager, and in someways would not be surprised if he walked, leaving the club with more turmoil. No one deserves the abuse he is being given, outside the game, the police or others would be knocking on those people’s door.
Suspect he will be given the international break and 10 games.
Let’s be honest with this team and the potential money the club has, do you really want promotion. I don’t.
Anyway that’s my feelings expressed, hopefully not abused anyone.

I’m not a massive Wilder fan but the fact is, we finished third with 92 points.
Wouldn’t have been the same outcome for certain, but Leeds kept Farke.

And whatever, surely Selles isn’t the answer because he is terrible
We did finish third with 92 points, that is an irrefutable fact.

It wasn’t good enough to get us up, that is also an irrefutable fact

Selles certainly looks out of his depth. Yesterday's game showed he hasn't learnt a single thing. But those who decided to let good players go and replace them with loans that have only played in League 1 should be held accountable. It will take quite a few games just for them to get used to the extra challenges of the Championship. Then you have to wait to see if they're good enough. Then just as they get to be decent Championship players it's time for them to go back to their parent clubs.

The problem is that if they try to put a squad together on the cheap will they be happy to pay out a lot of money to get rid of Selles this early? If not there's the double whammy of a clueless manager and players not good enough. Those players that are good enough seem to have given up.

There must be a claim against our ‘midfield’ under the trade descriptions act. I don’t know what Peck does, but I know he isn’t a DM or anywhere near good enough to be left on his own. Hamer does Hamer for better or worse, and O’Hare (probably the best of the 3) isn’t a CM, he’s a winger/attacking 10. All 3 were miles apart, we had no options in the middle, or legs and were overrun. Chong improved things 10% through pure physicality alone, but the tactics/formation are a disaster.

Also, the amount of standing off, when we were promised aggressive pressing, is the biggest annoyance for me.

I remember watching how Hull played last season (my colleague is a Hull fan) and thinking this possession shite is exactly that…. Shite. They had a corner and within 5 seconds their keeper had it at his feet. Selles thinks possession is everything. He thinks it’s better than shooting when an opportunity arises. Hence we don’t have any shots on target. The problem is we don’t keep possession either. I genuinely think he is clueless. I don’t like to see people fired after just 4 games but, I feel he has lost the players and the fans so, has to go!!

This is the problem in a nutshell.

If you have a decent left back whose weakness is positioning defensively don't put a lazy non-tracking left winger in front of him.
If you have a young inexperienced defensive midfielder, don't surround him with luxury attack-minded partners.
If you have Danny Ings on the bench don't put 2 other forwards on ahead of him especially your right-footed big powerful lad on the left wing
You need to be the manager 😂 Just how can he not see that…. how?

watching that I feel a bit sorry for him but, he picks the team and decides the tactics and he’s not good enough for us!!

I'd sack him first thing Tuesday morning after the TW closes.

Then id try and appoint someone with a lot more managerial experience (not Wilder) asap so that they had the time of the international break to work with the players and go back to basics such as playing with a functioning midfield on match day. Don't waste the time, let a new man who knows his arse from his elbow, time to integrate with the players and get his ideas across.

I sincerely hope the board are being proactive (yeh, right) and are speaking yo potential replacements (or their agents) now. Bettis and co shouldn't get off the phone today with the calls he should be making to potential new managers and last minute incoming players.

Whats done is done, but all so unnecessary provided we had made the right decision in the summer. Getting rid of CW (arguably correct), appointing a relative novice to take over from such a strong personality....one with no history of managing a club with high expectations in the league they are in....ludicrous decision. They went for the cool, hip guy who probably has a cracking power point presentation. They should have gone with experience and a man of known substance. Still time to get it right and learn from mistakes, but we have (as always) made it much more difficult for ourselves.

As for Ruben. Sorry kid, you had a go but you aren't the man for us.

The difference is this is now a top 6 squad, possibly top 4. We’re bottom with no points and no wins. And our window to get top 6, let alone top 4 will be closing soon.

Two of our four loan players, Barry and Bindon, have “only played in League 1”. The other 2 are Godfrey and Soumare (whom he won’t play for some unknown reason). Loans are not the problem.
