im a bit annoyed at sky sports as you think they would want to show different teams on live tv as they showed Leeds V Bradford & Sheffield Wednesday V Blackpool in the carling cup so who do sky sports decide to show in 2 weeks later in JPT Bradford V Sheffield Wednesday. a bit annoyed (& bias) but surely if youve shown 1 sheffield team 2 weeks ago at least show the other city team to even it out

Are they on sale now to anyone or is it pay on the day for all? Does anyone know?

Burton are yet to announce details on when they are available.

Not sure of the competition's rules on ticketing.

I feel the they have got the decision right to show Owls vs Bradford......
There was also potential in the Owls vs Blackpool game, that just never materialised.

For me, if SKY believe a game to have potential of it being the best of that round, go with it. Who cares about fairness?
Wednesday have been in our shadow for quite a while now when you compare the amount of games we have been shown compared to them.

As for this game, is it on general sale yet - does anyone know?

REALLY want to have a crack at this, I mean its a trophy, cup final at Wembley, why not? Good to have a look at the team without effecting our position in the league.

And regarding TV, the Beeb and Sky select their next batch of fixtures for January-May soon, no doubt we'll feature in that.

Lets get some fring players tested for this.

------- Long

Lowton Collins Maguire Lescinel

Flynn Harriot McAllister Tonne

----- Slew Porter

Still should be sterong enough to turn Burton over and maybe try and give Wilson a slection headache. Perfect chance to see if any of the academy/development players should be pushing for a place in the coming months.

What are the rules for this? I'm fairly sure there are no replays, so is it Extra Time and penalties, or straight to pens?

Cheers BB. That's a good system I think, considering how many games you can find yourself playing if you even have one cup run. Extra time is fairly pointless these days, I think.

I go along with that Ollie.
Its one of those games where I really dont care if we win or not

Surely we need to give the four defenders a rest at some stage? Our current defensive situation is an accident waiting to happen.
We haven't had a defender on the bench most of the season.
Who would have played in defence if Jean Francois or Lowton (or both) had got injured on Saturday?
As far as I know Parrino is the only other defender in our squad with first team experience. Is he fit to play?
Kozluk can't be signed until we sell somebody. Likewise Kruk or anyone else Wilson might want to bring in.
The reserve fixtures are so infrequent that the likes of Parrino, Warren and Connelly never get to play in a "proper" match.
Anyone who's half fit and could be classed as a fringe defender should be first name(s) on the team sheet for this one IMHO.

I'm not sure you can confidently say that the team you listed is "strong enough to turn Burton over". How much of Burton have you seen? Without looking it up, how many players of theirs can you even name? That team you've named is basically our youth academy.

Isn't there a rule about how many first teamers you have to play - there's something about it on Wikipedia but that's not definitive

You have to start a minimum of 6 players that started in the previous league match.

Failure to do so will lead to a fine - worth a £5k slap on the wrist to play some of the fringe players? Could even have a whip-round of match fees...

Probably shouldn't do that, given our previous high profile stance against fielding players that shouldn't really be playing...

Not sure how we line up. Is it:

Long
Lowton Maguire Collins
Mendez-Laing McAllister Doyle Philliskirk Flynn
Porter Slew
?

Or is Flynn, or maybe Doyle at left back??

Subs: Simonsen, Parrino, Conneely, Harriott, Tønne.

Could even be a 3-4-3

Long

Lowton Maguire Collins

Flynn McAllister Doyle NML

Slew Porter Philliskrik

Gives us the option to move to a 3-5-2 or it could even be a 3-5-2

Slew Porter

I think it is probably one of the formations that Beech has up.

My mum says Wilson was on Radio Shef complaining about the rules, so we can only presume that he would have used other fringe players. I expect Harriot and Tonne to both feature at some point and then either Coneely or Parrino (other things aside).

Seen Megson has made 3 subs already at Bradford? Weaver came off in first minute.

Blades through 1-2 Tonne winner with wonder goal ;)

Nice to see Tonne and Davie Mac get on the score sheet. Two players that I hope will be pushing first teamers for a place. I will be interested to hear a match report and particularly how McAllister, Flynn, Liang, Slew and Tonne did.

Are Megson and Wednesday going to get fined for this clear flouting of the competition's rules?
Every other club has had to abide by them but Megson wants Wednesday to be treated as a special case and thinks he's found a loophole.
If they don't fine him and the club they might as well forget their "strong team" rule as every other club will start to follow suit.

Very briefly - First half we played or tried to play 3 at the back (Barcelona we ain't) never really looked secure. Had a couple of chances probably the best was when Philliskirk headed over. Overall though Burton had the better of it with their wide right player, Maghoma in particular causing all sorts of problems for our defence. They deserved to be ahead at the interval. After the break we changed to 442 and looked a lot more comfortable. with Parrino coming on for Philliskirk. They scored first, a well struck shot from just outside the box but we replied very quickly with McAllister getting beyond the defence and picking up on a ball over the top from (I think)Maguire. Tonne was subbed on during the second half and he got the winner, a well taken goal cutting in from the right and shooting across the keeper.

Enjoyable night, a decent turn out of Blades. We gave Pesch a song and he gave us a wave. When we finally got going we looked OK but the first half was distinctly average. I thought Long did well and he had no chance with their goal. Still a work in progress but I think that we are moving in the right direction.

Although Maghoma drifted in and out of the game a little I thought he would be a perfect addition to our squad. Hope DW keeps an eye on him.

We were very poor in the first half and very fortunate to be level at HT. There was a definite improvement after the break with the change in formation and also a few improved performances. Definitely a game we'd have lost last season so it's nice to see we're getting that happy knack of winning when we're not playing particularly well.

Maguire's ball for the first goal was an absolute peach and McAllister gave it the respect it deserved with a great touch and finish. Tonne struck his shot very well but I think the 'keeper will be disappointed he didn't save it. Looked to be a good spirit between Tonne and McAllister when they congratulated each other at the end - think we're starting to build a group of players who are a team rather than a group of individuals.

Long - made some decent saves. Doesn't quite look ready for the first team to me but I'm sure not many 'keepers do at his age.

Lowton - looked excellent going forward in the last half hour. He's a really good attacking player and getting him forward, supporting attacks will be absolutely crucial for us this season.

Maguire - did well and, as I said, fantastic pass for the equaliser

Collins - another assured, confident performance. Got a good reception from the travelling support at the end - how things change!

Mendez-Laing - really poor in the first half, seemed to be finding his feet a bit when he was withdrawn

McAllister - not a great performance but improved as the game went on and I think he'll score goals regularly when (if) he gets a run of games

Doyle - was disappointed with him last night, thought his passing was poor

Flynn - works hard without ever getting very involved in an attacking sense. Another one who improved as the game went on

Philliskirk - shocking miss in the first half and was sacrificed when we went 4-4-2

Slew - could've done more for me. Didn't look quite as hungry as he did last season and was a bit casual at times. Nearly scored near the end but gave himself too much to do by taking the ball wide rather than driving at goal

Porter - won a couple of headers but generally looked lacking in sharpness

Parrino - I think he'll enjoy playing under DW more than he did under Adams etc. Looked to pass into attacking areas and get forward - suffered from team-mates not anticipating the pass a couple of times

Tonne - Got more involved in the game than a lot of the others had done previously and scored with a well struck shot

Harriott - not on long but looked tidy as usual.

Didn't see a great deal last night to suggest we've got good back up to our more established players but I do think it's sometimes difficult to impress in these low key affairs. Parrino, Tonne and possibly McAllister the most likely to challenge for a place. Our squad is still lacking good options in wide attacking areas, taking a punt on a raw option from the lower divisions (like Maghoma) might be the best way of addressing this.

Nice set up at Burton even though they didn't give me a ticket for my collection and I didn't see anyone selling a programme!

Cheers for the report. Video with Maghoma here, used to be at Tottenham:

I didn't see anyone selling a programme!

I got one from the club shop with getting there early, it was essentially a Burton team poster folded into four for a quid :)

Agree with the majority of your ratings, except I'd be a little harsher on Slew myself.

i thought that it was a typical perfromance that utd have done for most of matches & that we didn't play that well but got the job done why we had to wait until we went 1-0 down to play well i dont know
