Blades 1 (Jones) Man City 0

I love hearing recollection of matches from older Blades. A good mate of mine, Frank Wood (1951-2000) told me in the 1990s that he remembers the above match very well. He said "I was stood in the John Street terraces, just before half time against Man City at the Lane, Mick Jones headed in a Woody corner to put us into the lead.....

..... after the cheering had died down, I looked towards the Kop and I could see in different areas there were punches being thrown, some fans ran for their safety and then there was more fighting, it was the worst I have ever seen and it took a long time before the fighting had stopped! Policemen quickly got into the Kop to try and restore order. St John Ambulance volunteers were very busy trying to get the injured fans out of the way to treat them on the perimeter, there were a lot of bloodied faces"

was at that game silent on the shoreham it was bedlam loads taken out with cuts and injuries city had a very naughty following at that time and although not the huge following of man utd had a big hooligan following they were behind us on kop and think that day prompted united fans to move further up to the back of the kop the following season

Spurs 2 (Greaves, Saul) Blades 0

I think it was the last competitive match when all our outfield players were the ones that came through the ranks at SUFC.

Anyone who attended the game were given a voucher to give them priority to buy a ticket for the following week's FA Cup final between Spurs and Chelsea. Bob Socks and his Blades mates were at the match, the Spurs fans who stood near them were courteous and friendly towards them after Bob Socks and his mates decided that they werent interested in going to the Cup final so they handed over the vouchers to them. That meant the Spurs fans would have spare vouchers for their friends or relatives to but the Cup final ticket. Five months later in the Blades' next visit to the ground, Bob Socks and his mates didnt receive the same "welcome" to the ground as there were a group of Spurs fans trying to attack them!

Thanks Silent!
That answers the debate on here a few years ago - who broke Gil Reece's leg.
A few said it was Armfield, I alway stuck by it being Tommy Thompson as I remembered the incident (and sickening crack) vividly.
Your excellent research has now put that to bed and I can die happy 🤣
and sickening crack
Where you on the Lane end? I was on the Kop and heard nothing and expected no one had seen anything on the empty cricket pitch side.
All I remember was Gil Reece going off on the stretcher and my Wednesdayite uncle who had taken me saying in his usual way 'He'll be back on in a minute!'

Yep, lane end.

The match was televised live by Pay TV (did any of you have a tv that was coin operated at the time?)
Can't remember it ever existing!
Most of my family had TV then so I think it was widespread by then but we did not have colour till 1972+ and both my parents worked full time.
ie it was only the rich and most of us were not rich.

Pay Tv was a short lived experiment

When the report says that Carmen Sevilla kicked off, don’t assume that was her only role; she had the thighs of a powerful midfielder!

I don’t suppose the visit to River Plate was in any way connected to the signing of Sabella in the Haslam era. There would not have been any club officials travelling there in 1967 who were still at the Lane 11 years later? I was unaware that United had already played there long before River Plate’s visit to the Lane.

Mallender seems to be getting a 'hand' from the gal in the white coat. Perks of an overseas tour I guess......

FA Cup 5th round

Chelsea 2 (Tambling, Hateley) Blades 0

My dad said the players were upset with the cup preparations because players had to travel to the match by train rather than travel by a private coach. Soon after the club decided that the 1st team would travel to away matches in a private coach.
