60 years ago today in our 3-1 defeat at Liverpool, there were league debuts for Alan Woodward (18 years old) and Barry Wagstaff (18). That meant we had five teenagers in our side, the other three teenagers were Len Badger, Mick Jones and Alan Birchenall (all 19 years old). Not sure if it was the first time we had as many as five teenagers in our side for a league match. The below photo was taken in October 1964 as it was the same line up for when we played at Liverpool also for the next two games (v Blackpool h and v Blackburn a). For the next three games after that (v Arsenal h, Leeds a and Chelsea h) the only change for the line up was Ken Mallender in for Joe Shaw. Not sure if the home game against Chelsea on November 7th was the last time we had five teenagers in our side.

Back row l to r; Len Badger, Barry Wagstaff, Joe Shaw, Alan Hodgkinson, Reg Matthewson, Graham Shaw.
Front row l to r: Alan Woodward, Keith Kettleborough, Mick Jones, Alan Birchenall and Barry Hartle.

Shaw's socks even lower than McBurnie!

Random guess here Silent.

Against Rotherham at home April 2014.
I have checked that last night. The only teenager in the starting line up was Connor Dimaio. Otis Khan and Louis Reed came on as subs. Harry Maguire already celebrated his 21st birthday and Terry Kennedy was already 20.

Everyone looks at least 30 though...!

No shirt sponsor either. Apparently Paddy Power wanted to sponsor us for the 64/65 season, but the then owner wouldn't have anything to do with it.

The youth policy was really working well loads of local lads on the fringes.
As as now it fell apart as the club didn't invest in incoming
transfers and the opportunity was lost.
We were a top division club holding our own against the best teams ! We just didnt kick on investment wasnt there ! Does that ring a bell!.
That's our history in a nutshell right up to this present day, young players coming through ! lack of finance and the opportunity is lost. But! can we change the future ! investment needed to kick on! Sounding like a broken record here we are again.

Between March 1961 and September 1967 we signed only 2 players from other league clubs. They were Gil Reece from Newport County in 1965 and Bill Punton from Norwich in November 1966.

I have to tell you as someone who watched them all back then.....THAT is a fabulous football team ! 👍. They wouldn't and on the whole didn't struggle in the top flight . If ..... IF ... only we didn't keep bloody selling the family jewels....sigh. :). Ketts. was one of the original 26 ( or whatever the number was ? ) squad member of the 66 winning England team. Joe Shaw !! just wow , the nearest to compare would be perhaps Bobby Moore , Woody ...enough said , Mick Jones in fact ALL of them great footballers. Just imagine ( as I have many times lol ) if we had kept them and added Currie ?????.....The mind boggles......:(:(.

One for Silent Blade. How many players born in Sheffield played in one game maybe more games. I quess early to mid sixties. However could be before i started going to Bramall Lane in 1966.

Yes very Difficult to find out Silent Blade. would take a lot of time to research. I am going on the ground tour soon you get to go in the Blades Museum. I will ask them. Maybe John Garret or Andrew Kirkham might have a idea.
