My first ever game. I can remember we won and our early goal from Tony Wagstaff, also the Greaves penalty. I didn't know who scored our winner. I was 7 years old. Not sure why my Dad took me to a night game rather than a Saturday game. I can remember he'd taken me to reserve games before then.

Blades 4 (Woodward 2, Jones, Reece) West Brom 3 (Astle, Fraser, Clark)

Jimmy Hagan returns to the Lane as WBA's manager!

Still wearing the "lucky" white shorts! Return to the 1st team for Cec Coldwell (first time since January) and Graham Shaw (played only 2 league games the previous season, the last was in December 1965) ! It was to be Graham's last league game for us but he made the assist for the winning goal!

Alan Birchenall's hair , yes, WBA wore all red which surprised Peter Howard too!

Aston Villa 0 Blades 0

Reserve centre half Charlie Bell's debut despite that he wore the number 9 shirt! I remember him being the centre half in Chesterfield's 4th division Champions season of 1969/70 season.

Badger and Birchenall returns to the line up after having being sidelined by injury, Coldwell relegated to bench, no place for Bell who never returned to the 1st team. Coldwell was soon back on the pitch after Tommy Thompson broke Gil Reece's leg but it was Coldwell's last 1st team appearance.

I had been hoping to start a 55 years ago thread last summer but had put it off due to restrictions and not having much time to go to the Central Library. I hope I have managed to obtain all the 1966-67 match reports so in the next few days I am going to post them in this thread. My dad probably did take me to a few games probably because I wanted to be with him when he says "I am off to the match". On each occasion my antics/lack of concentration/ demands for refreshment would irritate him so when we return home, he would say to my mum "he isnt ready yet!". I welcome your memories of the matches and I would be interested in your recollections.

England won the World Cup on 30th July 1966, the start of the FL season was only 3 weeks away! We didnt sign any new players from any FL or SFL football club since Gil Reece from Newport County in summer 1965.

In the previous season we started well and John Harris still trusted the players that came through the ranks at the Lane. We were at the top of the league on October but fell away to finish in 9th position. 20 year old Len Badger became the club captain midway through the season and Mick Jones scored 21 league goals for the whole season (Doc Pace was the only one since the war to have scored at least 20 goals in the top division for the Blades).

My first Blades team. Didn’t they all, Reece and Sherman apart, all come from the South Yorks, North Notts are ?

Silent, second sentence last paragraph, orignal message. Are you not confusing that season with 1971-72 ? Probably me again.

Chelsea 1 (Tambling) Blades 1 (Birchenall)

With Gil Reece out with a broken leg, John Harris decided to sign Bill Punton from Norwich. Some Blades fans who were at Stamford Bridge were surprised that the new signing didnt have much hair!

Thanks Silent!
That answers the debate on here a few years ago - who broke Gil Reece's leg.
A few said it was Armfield, I alway stuck by it being Tommy Thompson as I remembered the incident (and sickening crack) vividly.
Your excellent research has now put that to bed and I can die happy 🤣

That link to League tables is fantastic thanks Silent. The match at Hillsborough for the 2-2, I was in the open seats at the side of the pitch with my father , who died 30 years ago. The memory is still very vivid though. Their kop full of banners for both teams looked fantastic. Always felt the atmosphere suffered when flags and banners were banned

That must have been Northampton’s one and only season in the top division.
