The Maestro, Mrs. Doyle and Cresswell!!

What a let down. Sorry Danny, that's no way to start the renaissance!

Team:

Simonsen, Lowton, Jean-Francois, Montgomery, Doyle, Flynn, Collins, Cresswell, Maguire, Porter, Quinn. Subs: Mendez-Laing, Bogdanovic, Slew, Williamson, Long.

Very poor midfield really, having two similar players in the centre really just doesn't fit with the new flowing football we are supposed to be playing. Rather have seen Willo or Mcallister in the centre than Doyle, its a new season and everyone deserves a fresh start, but one stopper and one to create and play the ball is far better than two stoppers. Despite what Doyle wants to be, I don't see him as being anywhere good enough to be a box to box midfielder.

Williamson and McAllister should start. One non-footballer is unacceptable, let alone two.

One player who can shut the ball out and stop other teams playing is very acceptable if he wins the ball back for you and gives it to a decent partner that has good vision and ability to play a pass, which allows the play to build from them, but having two similar molds alongside each other is baffling, they have to prove us wrong though.

Sorry Beech, proper central midfielders have to be able to play a bit as well. Both of them. It's their job. These two are complete liabilities. We are in Division Three. The case for change is unanswerable

Not surprised to see Monty starting. Whilst he is at the club he always will.

We all know his strengths and limitations but I did expect Danny to look in a different direction.

Danny seems to want to focus attacks down the wings.

He perhaps feels he can get away with having ball winners in the middle.

You also need midfielders that can do the dirty work of putting strong challenges in, especially in this league, Willo and Macallister aren't that type of player either, so I understand having one battler in midfield alongside them, maybe Mcdonald is that combination you talk about pinchy but he aint signed yet.

Anyway a good start. Away win and clean sheet. Sounds like they are at least trying to play the right way. Harder tasks to come of course. We shall see.

Pleased for DW. He is quietly impressive. He seems to really fancy this job. We should all get behind him now.

Well done to 3587 Blades. Heard you loud and clear boys and girls.

The last time we had an away in the first game of the season was at WBA in 1989-90. That season didn't turn out too badly...

I figured I'd prioritise and get this sorted before commenting on the match or uploading any pics.

Here you go, the Blades first goal of 2011/2012:

Cheers Foxy. That was mint.

You notice every outfield player joined in to celebrate and congratulate Harry. It shows a strong team spirit which is an important part of any winning team.

good second half performance from the lads. Porter looked decent, Flynn looked Ok but for me Jean-Francois was my Man of the match. Shooooot was the cry every time he got ball. Monty was steady. Williamson was doing tricks at the end.

I realised we are in the third division when I saw the players' entrance!!!!!!!

Thanks for video Foxy ...... though I could have swore we where wearing gold in the second half ..... maybe I am mistaken, but didn't think I was the only one .......

All round a good display thanks Foxy for the clip.

i thought (from radio sheffield) Blades play well but not at there best but it seems like Oldham never really caused us a problem as they had 1 shot on target all match but i cant analyse them properly until i watch them V Brentford & Walsall next week. i realized why i loved football as sheffield united went 2-0 up after about an hour & all ready im jumping around room got too optimsic/deleued & thought sheffield united going to win league 1 & JPT

I thought we played quite well yesterday considering it was the first game of the season. We were definitely the better starters and took the game to them early on, but after 10-15 minutes we let them drag the game down and got caught up in the scrappiness they wanted to get.

We started exactly the same in the second half, except we got the all important goal which I never thought they'd come back from. All in all, a good performance for the first day, a clean sheet and a comfortable win. Fingers crossed we've started as we mean to go on...

Was very impressed with Francois and Quinn in particular. They linked up very well down the left and that could be very dangerous in this league if yesterday is anything to go by. Felt Porter didn't quite look match fit, so I'd give him a few more games before I make full judgement on him. Flynn seemed a bit lightweight to me but he worked hard to track back and help Lowton out, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in the 2 home games coming up where he'll play with a bit more freedom.

Plenty of positives to take from yesterday overall, but not time to get carried away.

Foxy that is class camera work feller, superb view of the goal. Well done.
Movement was good. We have been shocking at corners over last two/three years but there was some good movement in that lot.

Here's a couple which brought home life back in the 3rd tier for me !
