For those without Twitter:

"Ruben Sellés arrives at Sheffield United not just with a résumé spanning some of Europe’s most diverse football environments, but with a clear, identity-driven philosophy shaped by years of high-performance education and top-level experience. After a season of emotional, tactical and leadership challenge at Reading, Sellés takes over at Bramall Lane with a belief in dynamic, high-intensity football rooted in human connection, clear principles and a readiness to adapt when necessary.

At the heart of Sellés’ footballing vision is an uncompromising intensity. Defensively, his teams press high and aggressively. “We press to score goals,” is his mantra. He believes in defending far from his own goal and demands dynamic off-the-ball work from all players. In possession, he favours rapid vertical play — reaching the final third quickly, either through direct combinations or a more structured, build-up approach depending on the situation. He wants his teams to thrive in what he calls “organised chaos”.

His experience as a performance specialist informs how he builds his teams. Sellés holds a master’s degree in high-performance sport and a UEFA Pro Licence, studying under Paco Seirul·lo — the architect of FC Barcelona’s methodology. That education, he says, set a standard for everything he’s done since. He’s worked in Spain, Russia, Azerbaijan, Norway, and Denmark before joining Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton as assistant, then briefly taking over as interim head coach in the Premier League. That spell included impressive results against elite opposition: Southampton remained unbeaten under his leadership against Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool.

Sellés is not a tactical ideologue. At Reading, he started the 2023–24 season trying to impose the 4-2-2-2 structure he used at Southampton, pressing high and playing at intensity. But the realities of League One — direct opponents, fast transitions, and squad limitations — forced adaptation. With a high defensive line often exposed by quick balls into the channels, he adjusted. The switch to a 4-3-3 allowed his side to press more compactly, dominate second balls, and regain shape more easily.

Tactical flexibility, though, was only part of his impact. Sellés’ most impressive work came in his ability to build culture and trust under immense off-field pressure. Reading were hit with multiple points deductions and financial instability, including unpaid wages and HMRC disputes that prevented player registrations. The squad was threadbare, full of academy players and short of senior experience. But Sellés didn’t hide from the crisis. He embraced the club as his own, communicating clearly with his players, shielding them from the worst uncertainty, and fostering a spirit of resilience.

He knew when to push and when to pull back. After each points deduction, his staff gave players space: light training, small-sided games, and a focus on mental reset. The results were remarkable — Reading won every league game following a deduction. The squad played with a sense of shared purpose, and the supporters responded. Nearly 20,000 turned up for the final home game. Sellés had helped rebuild a fractured bond between club and fans.

More than a tactician or a motivator, Sellés is a coach who believes football is emotional, human, and expressive. He wants his teams to play with energy, identity and belief. He speaks of the importance of players feeling that they can beat anyone — and at Southampton, they did. He talks of the fire that drives him every day, even when the challenges are overwhelming. And he believes that when style, culture and club identity align, the results follow."

Let's see how this wonder vision survives real life Championship opposition.

As Mike Tyson said:
"Everyone has a plan, until I punch them in the face".

Fair point, but the Tigers didn't finish the season so fiercely, did they, staying up due to others' failures.

He got more points than their rivals and didn't get relegated.

Although having read about the shitshow going on the background at Hull City, who like our rivals in S6 are experiencing some transfer Um Bongo's. I'd say that's a decent achievement for Selles.

It seemed to survive pretty well when he brought inferior players to the Lane last season. Absolutely schooled Wilder that night.
Did he ballocks it was a freak result. They scored early put 11 behind the ball. We score a perfectly good goal which was disallowed then Peck gifts them a second. After that they hit us on the break. They survived on goal difference!

Team's good enough, don't need any new defenders according to big Rubes. Looks like he's lost the plot already!
If you’re going to quote at least quote properly. Don’t talk utter shit. “Im not going to blame anyone, I put out a team that could’ve got a result”

I’m over reacting but my worry is I just don’t know if this will work out.

He needs to be in that boardroom saying you’ve brought me in & wanted my style of play. I need the players to do it. I’m not sure he’s a manager to do that, he’s admitted himself he’s a coach.

Then we’ve got an ownership signing players on data rather than their leadership, experience, ability to influence a changing room. It just feels all over the place at the moment & I include the ownership in that. Does anyone think we’ll sign 4/5 players between now & the end of the month?

My gut feeling is this is a very similar set up to 23/24 & that was a shit show.

Didn’t he actually say some thing along the lines of a team which would ‘compete for a result’. Selecting RND in a key position is an instant defeat sadly, shame he didn’t realise this. Also not playing a CDM is a bit of a stupid mistake. Let’s hope him and his trusted advisors can see this

What was his excuse? Not heard the interview?

He basically said we weren't good enough defensively or in transition and its up to him and the team to be better.

The interviewer mentioned the transfer window still being open and it being obvious where we needed streghtening. He said he wasn't going to hide or use that as an excuse, for the defeat today. He said the team we had available was good enough to compete better than they did today.

The original comment I quoted twisted the last part to make it sound like he said we dont need to sign a CB.

Pathetic management today. It clearly wasn't working in the second half and he didn't change the system at all. Just bought more attacking players on. Swapping Seriki for McCallum at least made me chuckle. He needs to be a lot better.
