If we've learnt nothing over the past 3 or 4 years (especially our time in the PL), having physical domination of central midfield is the key.For a ‘tactical and detail oriented’ manager
That approach was naive at best and suicidal at worst. Tried to play that way without the horses to do it, while appreciating the board have tied his hands by the sales combined with lack of any ability to close deals
Wilder was too rigid in someways but thinking about it he wouldn’t have exposed the likes of RND like that imo. Shite player offered zero protection = that result
Hope he learns quickly and shows he can adapt or he isn’t going to be here long. In fairness he did spell out where it went wrong and what we were crap at. So hope he can address it
Enter Soumare…If we've learnt nothing over the past 3 or 4 years (especially our time in the PL), having physical domination of central midfield is the key.
We rocked up today with Hamer and O'Hare in centre mid. As talented as both are, neither are going to physically dominate a game.
As per the start of every season for the past half a decade, we need a 6ft 4 decathlete in centre mid - even more so now Souza has gone.
Playing Peck on his own in centre mid is going to lead us to breaking all goals conceded records in the Championship.
Refreshing change to hear a manager take responsibility
I'd agree. But why was he on the bench to not play a part whatsoever?Enter Soumare…
Nice tat. Early days.I like him. I worry about him as a coach. But I like him.
I’m not sure what sort of pre season he’s had. But provided his fitness & conditioning are right I would hope he’ll be starting from now on. A League Cup tie is the perfect opportunity to give him minutes.I'd agree. But why was he on the bench to not play a part whatsoever?
ExactlyNice tat. Early days.
Yep. Still doesn't answer my question. And I wasn't asking you. Just always find it bizarre.I’m not sure what sort of pre season he’s had. But provided his fitness & conditioning are right I would hope he’ll be starting from now on. A League Cup tie is the perfect opportunity to give him minutes.
I'm assuming they thought bringing him on when we're down and out when he's only been in the country a few days wouldn't be ideal.I'd agree. But why was he on the bench to not play a part whatsoever?
If we aren't bringing him on in that scenario? What's the point?I'm assuming they thought bringing him on when we're down and out when he's only been in the country a few days wouldn't be ideal.
I imagine he was on the bench because he's literally the only available midfield!
How do you know it's the right change though?Change hurts, it's going to hurt but we need to bite the bullet to progress. Let's not bottle it and appoint Hecky again.
Doing his team meeting on the pitch at full time end up in bad way. Phil Brown with hull City ended in tears.Great work![]()
He's a young lad, never played in English football and only been at the club for 6 days and you want to throw him on in a game we'd lost? I'm sure that would have done him nothing but harm. The third and the fourth goals came in quick succession, so hardly any time to make changes anyway. If we aren't bringing him on in that scenario? What's the point?
Better yank the 'YANKS' out of the clubBetter yank that AI power plug out of the wall
Setting fire to the changing room would have been more subtle. Was this a not so subtle message from Selles to the owners?
How did RND even get back into the starting picture,in any position
I like him. I worry about him as a coach. But I like him.
Oh well, there you go then. Definitive proof.Doing his team meeting on the pitch at full time end up in bad way. Phil Brown with hull City ended in tears.
What is alright though? Its reassuring that he's admitted we were too open in transition, and needed more structure in the middle of the pitch and took responsibility for that. Some managers would just double down.
There were some good attacking moves during that game and we were unlucky to only score one.
If we sort out the defensive side of things with improved structure and personel then we might be alright.
What is alright though?
If that squad doesn’t change significantly, I’d take 4th from bottom now.To me, with the squad we have "alright" would be in or around the top 6 whilst being more entertaining than last season.
Absolutely spot on … but I do also worry about Selles naivety defensively. With the attacking talents that we have, it would be difficult not to look good at times going forwards. There seemed to be a complete disregard for the basics of keeping a solid shape when defending, picking up opposition players and getting pressure on the ball…. plus a total lack of on-field leadership. I’m fine with his desire to be expansive but it has to be balanced by a well drilled approach to defending. Fingers crossed he rapidly gets some experienced defenders in to help him achieve it.2.5 XG, 20+ shots, 14 corners, 75% possession.
Stats rarely (if ever) seen under Wilder.
Against decent opposition too.
I'd seen enough in the first half to obtain a level of confidence in Selles.
He's very quickly implemented some fast attacking patterns.
At worst, the tactics were naive. If it was knockout football, then I'd agree - suicidal.
But it's his first game into a long rebuild, trying to change the culture of the club.
Drop 3/4 quality players into that starting XI, particularly in defence... and I don't think we get exposed on the counter as we did.
In fact, we probably win comfortably.
The owners have put Selles to work without the tools for the job. This is on them.
We'll see what happens over the next few weeks, there's time for it to be turned around but the murmurs about their willingness to invest and confusion on how to invest are concerning.
Their PR has been terrible and I can't fathom why they haven't brought in some "soccer" advisors. What do a bunch of millionaires from Ohio know about the EFL? Who's calling the shots?
They gave Wilder a 3 year deal then sacked him when he fell at the final hurdle.
What does that say about them and their objectives?
Why bring in Selles, a complete change of direction, if you're not going to provide the investment to allow him to implement his ideas...?
We'll find out over the next few weeks whether this is "bedwetting," as so many enjoy labeling it.. or if the concerns have been valid.
