Sammon should be shown the exit and Done should be shown an extended contract.

Also think Doyle is not the answer.

We have MUCH bigger needs in the squad. Get a big man in to replace Sammon, give Done a longer contract and bring McNulty back. Spend the money on positions where it is actually needed.
 
I really wanted to sign Doyle, I didn't know he'd even gone out on loan.
I'd like to improve the partnerships we already have but in all honesty I'd swap Sammon for Doyle straight away.
 
Why would anyone want to give Done a longer contract? All he can do is close down and run about. And he doesn't even do that intelligently most of the time.

Doyle would offer much more than Sammon but if we want guarantees then Matt Smith from Fulham would be the best bet.

Thinking out loud:

Yours is a widely held belief that we have greater needs elsewhere but now that we are playing to the squad's strengths and keeping it tight, protecting the Back 4, playing more on the counter at certain stages of the game, I reckon goal opportunites need to be buried as they will be fewer and further in-between, therefore I hope for a pacey new striker, good on the counter-attack.

My next priority would be a physical midfielder with a good engine to provide more choice and cover for Hammond and Basham because I don't see a single other midfielder who could do what they do ( maybe Flynn could actually). Coutts and Woolford are hard to replicate too but we have any number on the bench who can come on and change things in midfield if needed: Baxter, Adams, Flynn, Scougall, Cuvelier, Reed, Wallace J & K, Freeman, Ryce, Harris even. Thing is whether we are going to reinforce the "enforcer strategy" in midfield?

The Back 4 of Brayford, Collins, Edgar and McEveley has stopped letting goals in since the Shrewsbury game and we have Freeman, Harris, Flynn, McGahey, Wallace K, Basham. Suppose we do need a central defender too unless we do think McEveley can play there, and he can for the odd game. Alcock hasn't left yet. Shame Kennedy's woes continue though.

We've two relatively capable goalkeepers.

OK, we need 1. striker 2. midfield ball winner 3. central defender if we have the money.

In amongst all this my own instinct tells me that Adams has loads of maturing to do before he becomes the finished article as a striker in a promotion team.
 
Everytime i think of doyle i remember that ginger haired prick who did the ridiculous fish out of water play acting to get higgopotomaus sent off
 
We are playing the style of football we are because Adkins was given no choice, as our players are not good enough at playing the way he wants. So its more than reasonable to believe he will buy players to fit the way he wants to play. A striker for me really isn't something we need. Sharp will score goals, there is no doubt there (check my posts, I've never questioned him). Done and McNulty have both shown they can score in this league, Adams has flickers of brilliance in front of goal also. Get a few more goals through midfield and wingers, with the likes of Dack. And of course some more energy, steel and creativity through someone like Morsy.

The only kind of striker that I see the use for is a target man type to replace Sammon.

I don't see us reverting styles except through enforced absences which is the point I'm making about cover. Not sure "wingers" are coming back soon or even creative midfielders. I think Adkins has learned a lot about L1 this season after his time away. I do hope you're right though but the other point is whether we can get rid of enough players to accumulate some space and cash to buy good enough players to enable us to be more ambitious in our play again.
 
Apparently he still gets stick for that from his teammates - they were embarrassed
 
I do laugh when a player is mentioned for us, proven at this level recently and gets shot down "he's not the answer" etc. The lad would score for fun in this league again, please remember we play in division 3 and will not be attracting many top players while we aren't in promotion contention.

The woes of being too short to be a centre-back in modern football [spare us the irrelevant Joe Shaw stuff, please] and terminally injury prone are not going away.

He's added a further woe of not being able to command a place in Cambridge United's division four defence.

The writings on the wall, Woody. Just as it is for that little mascot who has a kick around with the big lads at half-time. You know, the one who is, age for age, better than Tony Currie...

There's been quite an evident lack of quality coming through the academy in recent years. Maguire aside. We seem to have opted for particularly small players that have shown extremely little in the way of having the talent to back that up. Reed acts as a perfect example.

Exactly the type of background we should be looking at. He has obvious ability but only a possibility because of a tough spell to give us a chance of signing him.

No, scoring goals isn't our problem. A strong midfield and a strong centre half that weren't loans would be my preference. In the perfect world I would want a winger who could tear down the line and get crosses in. Up top is not an issue.

Also, haven't we learned out lessons taking players who made the big move then it never quite worked out for one reason or another? Championship cast off are often cast off because they aren't prepared to put the hard yards in, the polar opposite of what we really need. Doyle has never struck me as that good a player in any case. Sure he had a hot streak but he really isn't all that.

Although i like him as a player and he's a good suggestion, i think he'll demand high wages and at the minute we have quite a few players on what i would see as mid to top championship wages
 
Vaughan's another injury prone one and we shouldn't be taking risks with players like that anymore.

Lukas Jutkiewicz could be a good bet. Not anywhere near Burnley's team. Not sure if he's injured or not. Poor goalscoring record recently but he's a target man with good ability and would do well in League One.

Now? Much less so.
 
I hope so. Would probably be a loan deal though.

He's quick and can score, he's around 6 foot as well. He'd be a suitable partner for Sharp. He'll still have the hunger too because he's still got plenty to prove.
