something I read earlier on the Clough thread and thought it merited its own thread.

It seems a common argument is "Good job message boards weren't about 'insert circumstance' then"

So did fans 'moan' or 'criticise' back then?

I'm certain I did when we sold Deane Twice! Got relegated etc etc

I remember the Kop being a battlefield in Porterfield's last season at the Lane.

I'd say the only time the fans stuck with them for the full 90 minutes even though they were shit was Blackburn at home, penultimate home game of 78/79 season. A win against already relegated Rovers (could be wrong but have a feeling Kendall was their manager at the time) was essential if we were to stay up. We lost against 10 men and were atrocious, the only positive was the fans (even Pritchett praised them). Not that it did any good, perhaps it would have been better for the fans to vent their true feelings and give the team a boot up the backside they deserved.

Weren't the fans the driving force behind Brearley deciding to take the club on? I remember a story about an away game at Grimsby where we were toss but we took three or four thousand and sang loud and proud throughout. Before my time though.

I think it's worse now because more information is available which allows more people to (mis) interpret it and be outraged. In the past I think it was more fo used only the pitch alone.

Interested to hear more about the kop at least he end of Porterfields reign SUFC Handsworth

Yes the Blades fans at Grimsby were very good that day, last game of the season and a nothing game for us. They secured the title with a 4-0 win that could quite easily have been double figures, Sabella's last league game for United. And yes, apparently the fans backing that day did have a bearing with Brealey taking over, although Unitedites totally trashing Cleethorpes before and after the game usually gets conveniently side-stepped in this story!

I was there stewarding on one of the coaches. We refused to leave their ground until the players came out to see the fans. Everyone sang loud and proud. I didn't get to see them, had to get back to meet he driver and get the coach ready but you could hear the singing all the way back to the coach.

I don't know if it was that year, but I remember on one occasion, the Police at Grimsby trying to keep Utd fans in the away end for half an hour after the match. Unfortunately Blundell Parks away stand was 90% corrugated iron sheets, which were kicked out and hundreds of fans made their way across adjoining gardens.
Much to the disappointment of the local press I recall :)

I remember the Green Un Postbag or "Tell it to Tony" were full of Blades fans moaning about SUFC's team selections and tactics. Two regular contributors that stick in my mind were Pete Godfrey (from Fulwood) and Fred Shemeld (from Southampton-does he really go to every game?)

I always call the pre internet days - my Razzle years...

The glory years when my mattress was one inch higher in height, that my need to go to the shed was regular, that the back of the cupboard behind the subbutteo boxes got regular visits and the decline in profits at GT News became alarming...

or in our case, getting up to some jolly japes by asking Dougie Daz to go in to GT News and ask the woman behind the counter which was the best magazine out of Escort and Fiesta.......

I remember that game too. We were all kept penned in like animals....the noise of the fans kicking the stand was incredible..

I've said it before - the idea that nobody criticised then is nonsense.

30 years ago - 1985-6 - the atmosphere at a number of home games was poisonous. The Millwall defeat was worst, but United were booed off after winning against both Carlisle and Fulham, and of course there was a car park demonstration after the Norwich game when Porterfield got fired.

One common feature of the two seasons? Underachieving players.

Enjoyed that day out:)

And then the appointment of the great Billy Mcewan

Pre internet days...nightmare. You had to wait until 6 when the Green 'un came out to get the other football results for one thing.
