Jamie Murphy wants to use his move to Albion as a springboard to a Scotland call-up.

The Glaswegian winger signed from Sheffield United played under ex-Seagulls manager Mark McGhee at Motherwell and for Scotland under-21.

McGhee, now No.2 to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, still lives in Brighton and Murphy hopes to catch his eye again following his £1.5 million switch from the Blades on a four-year deal.

The 25-year-old said: "He (McGhee) was the first one that gave me a real chance in the first team, a run of games, playing games in Europe. He was big for me at the time.

"If you play well enough it's always going to get talked about, so it's up to me.

"It's one of the big reasons I felt like making the move was a good thing. I want to try to get in my national team, I want to give everything I've got to try and do that."

Murphy, signed too late to feature at Fulham tomorrow, will be watching his new team-mates in the flesh at Craven Cottage after seeing their opening 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest last week on TV.

He said: "They played very well. It was a great performance from the rest of the boys and a deserved win as well, a good start to the season. Hopefully now we can keep it going."

I've been to Brighton several times and it's an impressive classy cosmopolitan city to live in
Much warmer than Sheffield and within driving distance of London.

If he's got a good pay rise then it's a no brainer.

No official figure released by either side. Radio Sheffield thought it was £2.5mill on footie heaven last night. In truth everyone is just guessing

Murphy must have known a while ago that clubs higher up were sniffing after him and that he could have doubled his wages but was happy to sign a new contract with us and state how much he loved the club, yet a few weeks later he wanted away. He should have been told that he would have to see this season out with us. As for having a player not committed, well that would have made a mockery out of the statement he put out. These contract extensions that players sign are worth nothing, especially to a selling club like SUFC. To a certain extent I can live with these players departing if only we replaced them with some quality and within a short space of time, yet we always seem to take an eternity to eventually recruit Joe Average.

Perhaps he's already been replaced, by Adams backed up by Woolford?

Indeed. Some of Jim's tweets essentially confirm this point.

"Yes, earlier this year he signed a 3 year extension, but we owned the contract, not the man. His will matters.

It would appear Murphy handing in a transfer request was the game-changer, given up till then we'd according to Jim turned down several bids over £1m.

This whole concept is crazy. The board are subsidising the club year on year because we're in this division. The idea that they are skimming money off and on the make just isn't believable.

I think this might be worth a separate thread but essentially is it the case that the board (in particular McCabe and the Prince) are subsidising the club ie taking millions *out* of their pockets and putting it into the team, the pitch, the facilities etc.

And the reaction to this in some quarters is stop nicking our money?

Out costs are more than our income. I'm sure there is some tax benefits however our wage bill and cost of infrastructure will be huge compared to the money league one gives you.
We could dump the academy and other none essential aspects but is that what we want when we view who we are as a club.

We spent a fair bit in the JTW which I assume was the Harry money so you'd hope it is repeated. There seems to be more being spent now than just before the Prince's involvement, when we couldn't, apparently, even attract a decent manager.

But we'll see. There have been rumours of Brighton's interest for a while now so we must have been thinking about options, lining players up, either as replacements or to strengthen other areas so you'd expect to see some incoming in the next week or so.
