Too early in the season to sack him, in my opinion. I don't think the squad is as good as you're suggesting but midtable, yes.

Let's see what he can do in the games after the international break. But something needs to change sharpish because at the moment it feels like a relegation season.
2 wins at home since we beat Wendy. How much longer does he need?

If we do sack Wilder then once, just for once, can we not rush the replacement appointment and actually interview people, or consider poaching a manager from someone else? The sad reality is that this club probably would go back to Hecky. The performances could remain crap but we might start winning and for a lot of fans that's enough because they won't accept that the performance is as, if not more important than the results. Good performances lead to good results. Good results with poor performances gradually lead to a downfall which is exactly what has happened to us over the last two seasons.

Being honest we've played badly for nearly five seasons now. In our promotion season under Hecky we didn’t play amazingly well all season. The following season was an inevitable shambles. The season after that we were outplayed by nearly everyone we came up against but somehow got to 92 points. Other than a run of about 7 games last season we were dire all of last season with inconsistent results. As for this season it's been a shameful embarrassment.

Why do teams with lower budgets and "inferior" squads always play better football than us home and away? Why aren't Sheffield United fans allowed to watch a good game of football and able to walk out of a ground saying "we played really well today?"

Why do our fans accept mediocrity so easily, and worse than that defend it. Bang average players get hero worshipped or exaggerated. I just don't get why we can't play football if it's not the manager who's at fault.
Because its engraved in a lot of Blades fans Brain that "Pashun" overrides Skill and technical ability.
Then there is this obsession with Bladey Bladey, there are even a few already mentioning Heckingbottom.
You just know when Wilder does get the boot Billy Sharps name will be at the front of a lot of our fans list with the simple explanation of "he gets the club", what does this even mean do any other club have this at the top of their list when recruiting a new manager.
The whole club needs gutting from top to bottom and dragged from the 80's into the modern era. Even one of our songs is about not having a barrel of money, what other fans sing about their club having no money. Its like we are always destined to be the under dog club.

I’m at a point where I’m starting to believe that CW is trying to get fired.

Look at the facts. We’ve known all summer we’ll have a tight budget.

CW gets in senior players like Phillips, Ayew, Choudhury and Doherty on loans and frees, meaning we save money in signing fees but likely pay more in wages.

We chase Souttar all summer and even come close to paying £10m for him. £10m. So far this season he’s been poor at Leicester, imagine if he’s doing the same here.

CW knows we need some legs in midfield, and on the left, and ideally CBs. He loses Hamer, Brooks and COH and replaces with BBD and a loanee.

We don’t use all loan slots available to us.

He says things like “Shackleton is going to have a big season” and “he trusts the players” then comes out with the utter shit of last night about knowing who does and doesn’t need to play now. It’s not preseason, how don’t you know that by now?

He throws players under the bus (again), complains about things that happen every season (deadline day) and looks for the next break as the main focus for a reset (preseason / international break).

He talks about key players being out, he means Chong and Seriki, one raw and the other being still a youngster. Are these game changers then?

Last night, versus L2 opposition, we finished the game with Bamford, BBD, Ayew, Cannon and Donovan on the pitch. FIVE attacking threats. Fucking FIVE.

Sounds great doesn’t it, except it’s shit, because who’s supplying them Chris? Same as last season, we’re chasing a lead so throw everyone on and hope something happens.

It’s not tactical genius, it’s relying on moments of quality, now without quality players.

At a leadership training course a few years ago, my instructor said something to me that’s always stuck:

“There’s no I in team, but there’s five in Individual Brilliance”.

The point being working as a team is preferred, but sometimes you need someone to grab a situation and shine.

That’s been our tactic since he came back for round three. Keep it tight and give it to a better player and hope something happens.

As for walking away from the travelling fans, who does he think he is? These people have paid and traveled and given their time up to watch that utter shit served up, and you can’t even acknowledge that?

He’s lost the dressing room obviously, and he’s losing the fans fast.

Two or three more performances like that and it’ll turn very nasty.
Great post.

I'm losing the little patience I have.

I can't fathom how a professional football manager can continue to set these players up in a 4-4-2 the way he does. There is simply no game plan, no patterns of play, no enthusiasm from the players (which probably stems from there utter disbelief of what they are being set up like).

That was me, until today. Normally, my anger disappears over night, it turns to sadness. Today, I'm even more angry. In his interview, Wilder appeared happy with the first half. 'Went off script' second half. Bollocks. They were a disgrace, on the whole, with a few exceptions. Own it Wilder or feck off.

I could have wrote this.

It's never down to Wilder - always someone else he wants to throw under the bus. Don't think I have ever heard a Manager feel the need to build himself up as he does. Bit tiresome now.

For all the disappointment, anger , frustration expressed here , and in many cases with good reason, the reality is Wilder will be probably here for a while longer.

We have stoke , then a break and whilst the team aren't flirting with relegation I cant see any changes being made .

Fortunately for the club and wilder there are some pretty crap teams in this division and enough winable games to keep us from the danger zone .

Of course if we plummet then the owners will have a decision to make but until that time , like it or not , and for many its the latter , he'll remain in charge .

Not saying its right or wrong , just where id put my money if I had to.

I’m all for getting rid of Wilder but don’t appoint Hecky again. I can’t believe people are suggesting him as the replacement.
It’s absolutely crazy ain’t it. A majority of the fans are the issue with the bladey bladeyness, the got to get the club, the Jokanovic and Selles didn’t work. I just want a coach and players who are professional athletes. Fuck “getting” us and the “culture”

I’ve always been fairly pragmatic about Wilder across his 2nd and 3rd spells, he’s neither the messiah nor a disaster.

My issue here is he talks about trusting the squad, being a good group, culture etc etc. From this you’d expect the full squad to be pulling in the same direction.

Then every year we seem to have a cup tie, where we change it up and squad players come in - seemingly aren’t arsed and do their own thing. It’s one thing to talk a good game, but it falls down when reality hits. Granted players can have off days and that isn’t necessarily on the manager, but when there is a pattern of this and no signs of improvement it’s on CW.

The players he talks about are one assumes Jairo, Campbell, RND, Rothwell, Doherty all who have been signed or had contracts extended by Wilder.

Dont think we are going down, but we are on course for a nothing season.

He needs a few wins on the board, or quickly it will become pretty toxic and ultimately he will be in an untenable position.

Would being outplayed and defeated by Lincoln at home do it?

Unfortunately for us we are flirting with relegation. We are very fortunate to have the points tally we have.

Unfortunately for us again, I assume the yanks are too thick to understand.

Been thinking back to the interview with Rosen from a couple of weeks ago and it's pretty apparent in that, if confirmation was needed, how much control of the club he has. We know he has a close relationship with Bettis, which can be both a positive, as well as a potential negative.

Would we entertain the idea of Wilder becoming a Director of Football and bringing in a new manager to coach the team better?

It removes some of the risk of Selles part 2. and the huge transformation following on from someone who has their fingers seemingly in every pie at the club. It also, may oddly fit his qualities better by getting out of the weeds of weeds of the day-to-day coaching and being able to set the tone and the culture he so often goes on about.

Of course, the big question is, would he go for it and could we afford to do that?

No!! We need to change direction

Wilder DoF?? Never, he'd have even more power to misuse!!

Not much of a reset if they appointed Hecky. Also Preston have less points than us, so.....

We may be by year end , that remains to be seen but I actually think the brief is " stay out of trouble and your jobs safe" .

Its not inspiring but probably where were at .

To be honest there is always risk . Making an argument to keep Wilder after the farce of the previous recruitment is ridiculous. What next don’t drive cos there’s crashes ?? Show some bollocks and change it
Im not making the statement based on the previous recruitment of Selles. I'm making it because the vast majority of what's going on is not Wilder's fault. Fans expect this team to do better. I don't. It's a very average team, at best.

If we get injuries and the fans make the atmosphere toxic which I can see coming and I get but we're doomed if that happens. I get we're all very frustrated. I think Wilders hands are tied behind his back re recruitment. The 12 point deduction threat we needed like a hole in the head in conjunction to a budget that was limited to say the least. There's a reason Wilder goes back to former players a lot and that's probably because former players are the ones who will join us and do a job. Because anyone else of quality can see we're a total basket case and no doubt offered lower wages by us compared to others. I suspect Lyndon Dykes may have been one of those.

The board are mainly the ones responsible because last seasons recruitment was dire. Let's remember they sold COH on deadline day and if Wilder could get someone in I'm sure he would. Again, Wilders getting the blame for that total ness like he wanted COH out.

A lot of fans on here criticising Wilder must think someone else will do better because I certainly don't think that. I wrote this season off before it even started based on my original post and the mess we're in. I'd take staying up now, snap your hand off. When Seriki comes back with one I have some hope we'll improve.

Clueless post. Typical of some of our deluded fanbase. You seriously saying that there is no one else out there who could do a better job? Nobody in the whole of football. Anybody who defends Wilder after this knows absolutely nothing about football.
No one who we could get and even if we could it's still the same mess. You can get a better joiner but give him wood that's crap, crap tools and would it be better. I think Wilders record says he's a decent manager. I like Dave Challibor for example. We could probably get him.

However is he going to do better than Wilder? If he starts badly fans are on his back.

I think it's harsh saying my post is clueless because everything I've said re the mess we're in is true.

Wilder as DOF is terrifying. We already see his limitations, tactical, transfers and personal. If He is 'upstairs' he will still create a club in his own image which belongs nowhere near modern day football and any new boss will be held to account against his name by too many.

No. When he goes, he goes for good. He's had a fantastic time in the sun as a Blade managing his own club. It needs to be done at the point he moves on, for the good of us all, including him. His time in the sun is done, he now casts a shadow over our now and future.

He needs the job far, far more than we need him.

I think binning Wilder would be a breathtakingly stupid thing to do. I was deeply suspicious of his second coming and didn't remain convinced right through last season's struggle and the previous season's end of campaign failure. We had a poorly assembled squad of pretty lightweight players and zero bite and shake.

This season we are even worse off and patently not going to tear any trees up. If you take the squad player-for-player we look very capable, but under Wilder we aren't. The thing that saves his bacon for me is that we have tried alternatives to him - Slav, Hecky, Selles - and really paid the price and right now, backstage, we are facing a gigantic existential crisis, possibly bigger for us than the pigs faced last year. No manager worth his salt would come to a club where the ownership was so structually damaged (thanks to their own incompetence) and funds to strengthen are never available.

There's a likelihood we might end up with minus twelve (or combinations of) a transfer embargo, or have the owners bankrupted out of existence with HRH chasing his £35m right through the club. I don't buy any of the soft soaping so called experts spoon onto this situation that the crap COH/1919 have bestowed on Sheffield United in that the court action won't touch the football club and is directed elsewhere. When it all boils down to it they are businessmen and not Bladesmen, and rather than go to jail they will break up and sell anything they can if the lawman comes knocking.

In the meantime all United can do is keep playing football. The fifteen million we have trousered from Brooks and Hamer to them is 'dosh', not 'transfer dosh', which is why we have that piss-weak statement (that we get every year) that we will be looking at loans and out-of-contracts rather than hard, solid purchases and why Anel is at Burnley now and Souttar won't be pulling on stripes this season. It was they who squandered last season's last parachute payment on AI slop and it was they who appointed a novice in place of Wilder, who had clearly fell out with them backstage in the close season over their daft 'plans'. I won't be at all surprised if they make attempts to fire-sale the club and we spend most of this season lurking in the lower third praying for some or other miraculous run or wins and draws to propel us into the outer regions of playoff hope. I mean, the utter preposterousness of us even playing in the top flight without a whole-squad change (we don't have one player - even Bamford, who is close to PL standard) or even the vain hope we would beat the curse and get promoted by the playoffs leaves me suspecting some need mental health treatment.

The bottom line is we are stuck in this division now, and won't be even close to thinking about better times and fulfilled ambitions until every current player is paid off, transferred and gone, WIlder isn't our manager any more and the soft-headed shower of deluded individuals have flogged us to someone with real money. And we all know, that isn't ever going to happen. We don't get that kind of fortune. Look at the hope and expectation when HRH came in on 5% with McCabe and then when he ousted him and took the lot. We were all imagining big purchases and us shooting upwards or even staying in the PL. But what happened?

We may as well dig in and plan for survival with our priority and objective set as not to be relegated, especially with a mediocre, underperforming squad and a manager who is just patching up leaks in the hull.
So very well put Baz.
Very on point.
We are VERY much stuck in this division.
For now.
With a VERY real chance we'll exit it, but not in the direction we want.
Simply because of our owners, not Wilder.

Would he? He is effectively this now, along with the first team manager, head coach and tea lady, all rolled into one. His remit would be smaller.

You want to trust wilder with the overall scouting, transfer policy and football philosophy while working with a head coach?

Eveything that has been absolutely disastrous under him now for some time already!

When people suggest him as a DoF i can’t help but wonder if they actually understand the main roles of a DoF and compare that to wilders weaknesses and recent performance.

It has got to be a thank you and a clean break.

He would just sign a bunch of his trusted old culture carriers and hand them over to the new head coach who would be scratching his head thinking ‘what the absolute fucking hell is all this shite I’ve been given?’

It’s someone else for him to fall out with too

A good part of the reason why we are in this situation is because he’s continually spent MILLIONS on absolute dross that he’s got no idea how to actually put into a functioning football team.

The absolutely abysmal recruitment over recent seasons is going to haunt us for years to come. Signing has been shit on multiple year contracts while other teams sign players with potential to develop and grow in value. We may well need a relegation and re-set to finally break the mould. It might actually be more entertaining than watching slow, one dimensional football with absolutely zero creativity.

We’ve been outplayed in most games this season and we are very fortunate to have 9 points.
I agree to a point. I don't think Wilder has spent millions on transfer fees though. His signings have often been free transfers like Campbell, Bamford, Jairo, McCullam, COH. Where's these millions you're talking about? On Cooper and Burrows? They've been excellent, although Burrows has faded but still a great buy.

Wilder didn't buy any of of last summers players who cost millions. The likes of Rothwell, Jairo, Bamford have been signed in 1 year deals or 18 months in the case of Rothwell. They're here to do a job this season. It's clearly a reset and the board have decided or needed the best players to go. Presumably that's Wilders fault too.

The part on other teams sign players with potential sounds valid. Until you realise that these other teams haven't sold all their best players in one window. And the likes of Norwich, Swansea and West Brom, Stoke too have spent some serious cash this summer. I dont hear their managers saying we're signing free transfers!

Do our fans seriously think Wilder's saying to the board, no I don't want to sign young permanent players, let me sign free transfers over 30 please.

Some of if the stuff on here is incredibly critical and unjustified.

So what has he done that warrants a stay of execution?
Im not even going to answer that other than to say If you can't see why Wilder deserves to stay on after everything he's done well at for us, and the mess we're in, not of his making, then you obviously see this very different to me. Each to his own, we're all entitled to an opinion.

I dunno who respects him less ,
Me
or the players , the majority of whom are taking the piss whilst pocketing their wages
