Outgoing? Tom Cannon

It’s not the fee that’s causing pressure or expectation. It’s just the average-ness in every aspect of his game. If he was quick, strong, technically gifted, saw a pass, able to take someone on, just one of those things I’d be able to support the he’s trying and unlucky. He’s seems like a great bloke, But it’s the nothingness he offers.

No one is ever paying 7 to 8 £million for him, I can’t imagine anyone even paying a fee of any kind. He’s got zero football nous, he always makes runs into positions where he's impossible to find due to the opposing defenders relative positions. He never comes short and accept the ball to feet, shield it and play it into a teammate and go again. He’s no real pace, has poor upper body strength or physical presence, his only redeeming feature is he can on occasions strike the ball well, given time.

What’s more the biggest misnomer of all time, is that his initials are TC.

Right. As things stand with the forwards we currently have, we are desperately short.

Desperately.

Ryan One needs another loan.
Cannon should be moved on.
Try and get a tune out of Ty until next window in Jan and go from there.
Bamford main striker. That honestly ain’t gonna cut the mustard.

Movement in and out is badly needed at the top of the pitch.

Something has got to give.

Desperately 😡.

Sell him for £5 million and write of any future amortisation payments. Sounds easy enough but like others have said I don’t know how you convince any club to pay.

I don't like player pile-ons, but the Tom Cannon stuff is getting too much now.
I'm sure he's a good kid, and he is still a kid, but he's so far off the level and the poor lad looks devoid of all confidence.
When he makes a mistake you can see the expression on his face and the wilting effect it has on him. He knows the crowd are on his back.

He has a couple of attributes, a decent shot off both feet, which he's also able to get off early and accurately... and he also makes decent runs in behind.

The problem he has is, he struggles to ever get himself into areas to utilise that skillset effectively... mostly because he's very weak on the ball, and not fast / intelligent enough to find space.
Like Brewster before him, he looks lost on the pitch.

I'm positive he'd score a hat full in League 1. Ched Evans (albeit better physically) had similar skills and managed it...

I want him to do well, but I can't see it. There have been no signs of improvement. It looks like he needs another challenge and if an offer comes in, we shouldn't deny him of it.

I wouldn't be totally surprised to see him still have a decentish career, but it's not going to happen with us.

I would love him to reach the heady height of average-ness , he's nowhere near average

Good post - as always TBH

We all desperately want Tom to do well , he's a Blades player , I'm sure he is a good lad - but as you say , it really is time to move on for his sake most of all because if he is kept in the team it probably won't end well for all parties - Mr Wilder has to sort the situation out - for Tom`s sake . If he persists with playing him then it is not only stubborn / blinkered management but also cruel and reckless, and in my eyes a sacking offence .

I`ve run , and helped run, businesses and had to facilitate taking people out of the firing line, on many occasions - it`s not easy and i can understand the temptation to keep the faith - but there comes a tipping point when its evidently clear whats happening , and worse than that - what could happen .

In the few short minutes that Oné was on, he gambled on a header and had a shot on target (he was offside, but it was the right movement)... he then made a fantastic run down the left where he showed pace, power and balance and it nearly led to something.

Sadly, he pulled his hamstring in the latter event.. but he was so much more confident and decisive than Cannon in those two actions... If it's true that Oné is frustrated at his lack of game time, then it's understandable given who's keeping him out of the team.

The minutes we're investing in Cannon needs to go into Oné's development now. He's a better player and a home grown asset for the books. If any scouts were watching today, they'll have been left very intrigued about Oné, because his profile is rare.
Osula is already being spoken of as a £40m player...

I'd take what we can for him now and shake hands.

There may well be a player in there, but I can't see him coming out for us.

Use his wages for another loan at CF, and then try to get One as much game time as possible. Bamford and Campbell will be superb mentors for any young forward.

His stats todays match with AI's view:

This was a poor, low-involvement performance for a centre-forward. Cannon received a 6.0 rating, which is below average and reflects limited impact. In 60 minutes he had only 15 touches — extremely low for any outfield player, especially a striker expected to be central to attacking play. He offered almost no goal threat and struggled to influence the game.Attacking contribution (very weak)
  • 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 chances created
  • 0 shots (on or off target) → shot accuracy 0/0
  • Only 2 accurate passes out of 6 (33% accuracy)
  • 0/1 successful dribbles
  • 2 passes into the final third and 1/1 accurate crosses (the rare positive)
  • 1 offside
Interpretation: Cannon was almost completely isolated or ineffective in the final third. A striker with zero shots and minimal progressive actions in an hour is a major concern. The single accurate cross and two final-third passes show he occasionally got into advanced positions, but he could not convert that into meaningful threat.

Defensive & work-rate side (modest)
  • 1 defensive contribution
  • 1 clearance (headed)
  • 1 recovery
  • 0 tackles
He put in a small amount of defensive work (typical for a modern striker who drops deep or presses), but nothing standout.

Duels & physical battles (poor)
  • Ground duels: 0/2 (0%)
  • Aerial duels: 1/5 (20%)
  • Fouled: 0 | Fouls committed: 1
  • Dispossessed: 0 (positive — he didn’t lose the ball when he had it)
Interpretation: He lost the majority of physical contests. As a striker, especially one who often relies on hold-up play or winning aerial balls, a 20% aerial success rate and zero ground duel wins is disappointing.

That was absolutely no different to 40+ other performances he's put in with a blades shirt on. Utterly pointless being on the pitch.

Laughable that a sizeable minority has tried to make excuses for him for so long. One of the main points has been "play him in a two" like that would suddenly make him have any effect whatsoever on a game of football.

Had a dry run in a two against league one Mansfield, nothing. Had another chance on the main stage today, nothing.

Anyone with eyes could see it from day one, arguably before day one at previous clubs. As someone with eyes, I'm sick of the sight of him.

If hes going with 2 up front, who partners Bamford?

Onè looked good when he came on, but im not sure he's ready to start yet or even play more than 45mins IMO.

Campbell didnt impress me today. I would have thought with the new contract and not being picked to start, he would have come on and put himself about a bit more.
His fitness will need building as again, i cant see more than 15min from him, let alone more than 45min.

Cannon is struggling and is the scapegoat. There are obviously questions about him but I will also say, some of the stuff he was getting verbals for was also been done by other players, but they didnt get the same treatment.

Worryingly but honestly, if personnel stays the same, i think Cannon has to start because of his fitness levels, which look to be in a better place than Campbells and Onè's.

We dont need stats anymore - we have eyes

At least Connor Sammon was big and Ollie Burke was quick. I fail to see what one positive attribute that Cannon has? Whatever Preston are offering (even if its 500k) just take it.

Campbell also managed to come on and somehow be equally as pathetic as Cannon 🤦🏻‍♂️

I agree, stats are great, but it’s so obvious he’s either not good enough, lacking in confidence or both.

As Bell4 said for toms sake we need to move him on, it’s the first time I’ve sat at a football match and genuinely thought how is he a professional footballer for Sheffield United at this level he’s wasting away any time he has in the game being at our club.

Maybe just a loan out until January to try to regain confidence to L1 may help but we'd have to contribute I expect wages wise. Barnsley nearby.
