Peters' time at the Lane was before I was born so I can't include him.

For what it's worth, this is my ranking. Qualifications are that they have to have been in my living memory (I've used September 1988, when I started school, as a cut off), they have to have been a permanent appointment and they have to have managed at least 10 league matches.
  1. Wilder (2016-2020)
  2. Warnock
  3. Bassett
  4. Kendall
  5. Heckingbottom
  6. Spackman
  7. Wilson
  8. Wilder (2023-2025)
  9. Clough
  10. Wilder (2025-present)
  11. Bruce
  12. Blackwell
  13. Speed
  14. Jokanović
  15. Robson
  16. Adkins
  17. Heath
  18. Wier
  19. Adams

I'd have to put Hecky above Kendal,on the basis that he won a promotion. I did enjoy most of Kendal's reign though.

Spot on ...could be an argument to switch Bertie with CW , but there's a fag paper in it - IMO
I think Bassett has to go higher , purely for longevity and the fact that when people talk about about our identity it’s always driven by that Bassett team - even over 30 years later.

That's back to the Adams argument.

Adkins was definitely very shit, but the point is, we have had even shitter*.

*How many clubs can genuinely have this 'even shitter than the shit one', argument?

In my eyes Adkins was worse. Robson was the worst of all, but Adkins worse than Adams.

I remember hearing his post match interview after we’d lost at Crewe and he was going on and on saying how well we’d played, when all the fans were saying we were shit.

I think it was his relentless positivity in the face of shit results that I just couldn’t take.

I remember Leon Britton at Swansea was meant to be this top midfielder?

Dean Hammond also had a very good career before us.
Blackwell being a prick did for Britton.

'You need to play more exciting attacking football next year Kev'

'Fair enough Kev, I've got someone lined up who's ripped this league up'

Proceeds to play said player out of position and negates his best attributes.

In fairness to him, he had no chance. He spent his time here watching the ball fly over his head from the defenders to the forwards. Midfield was just a nebulous concept at that time.
Exactly. Never mind the biggest difference between a players ability for other clubs and their ability for us, how about ‘the most misused player for Sheffield United’

Britton could easily be up there.

For me since 1970

  1. Harris (1969-73)
  2. Wilder (2016-2020)
  3. Bassett
  4. Warnock
  5. Heckingbottom
Have to agree that Harris takes the honours. The 6th placed finish, plus the recruitment of Tony Currie seals it for me.

Looking back this far also offers the opportunity to pin Harry Haslam to the foot of the table. Horrendous performances, particularly away from home, after a rare (for us) major investment in the playing squad made his tenure a disastrous spell for the club.

6th placed finish was under Furphy

You are obviously entitled to your view and you are definitely right that both Adkins and Robson wasted a season each, and were teeth pullingly bad to watch.

Objectively however, a relegation has to be worse, so on that basis, Sirrel, Hallam, Peters and Adams, all took us down, without any promotions to compensate.
In my world, that makes them worse.

Actually, the more I think about Peters, the worse he was. A likely promotion season, descended into mediocrity, and then a surprise 'bonus' relegation.
