There's bad players and players who were just bad for us.

If I had to pick the biggest gulf between a player who was very good at their best elsewhere, but terrible for us, I'm struggling to think beyond Rush.

Fair enough he was 36 but compared to Cowans, McCall, McGrath, Speed, Short, Jagielka etc.

Great shout that one - and perhaps Jimmy Johnston ?

I remember Leon Britton at Swansea was meant to be this top midfielder?

Dean Hammond also had a very good career before us.

Luke Thomas lost an uncontested drop-ball, which puts him in a league of his own.
Down there with Keiron Wallace’s free kick when we loaded the box and then he shanked it straight out of play sideways about 10 yards away from where he stood. Think Foxy or Linz got it on video. Epically bad

Never had much luck with lads from the red filth of scouseland
Ian Rush , Phil Thompson & Brewster.

Does Jack Robinson redress the balance slightly?! Serious question there. I still think Robbo was reasonable especially for £500,000.

Mark Blount in fairness for those saying he was crap I seem to recall cost us very little and came from non league? Didn't he play alongside Mark Foran in a dream team defence?! 😂

Does JLT .... ? Nope , sorry

Chuck Ben Woodburn in there too.

Big Nose#1, arguably did a bit of a job alongside Ken McNaught, in that they steadied the ship under Porterfield. We did become more organised, although even as a young man, I can recall his lack of physical committment. You could feel the "I'm not getting injured for this lot", thoughts, from the stands.

Big Nose#2 was just shite.

Honestly didn’t mind him when he was here, no world beater but was steady enough imo. Watching the Celtic game today though, he’s abysmal, looks like he’s never played the game before.
He was utter gash. Always behind the state of play and never strong enough to withstand a challenge. Weak in the air and lacking in pace. He was bobbar for us.

And the Penny drops haha

Britton was a great player. Strangest signing I can remember - bought him, played hoofball, bypassed him, then froze him out.
Supposedly never settled in Sheffield and regretted leaving Swansea immediately. Memorable quote "It was a mistake and I should never have left Swansea"

Reasonable for a middling Championship team maybe. For a side which finished 9th in the top flight he was a ridiculous signing.

Britton was lured away from Swansea by Blackwell’s promise to build a team around him but then the reality of watching the ball fly over his head while being berated by an angry know-nowt on the training ground washed all that away. No surprise that he didn’t settle.

Don't forget Blackwell only lasted 2 games into that season before getting sacked, Britton had 4 managers in the 5 months he was here. T'owd Diags won't have helped but it was an awful time to join us all round.

Good point. I had it in my head that he'd signed the year before.

I bet he was straight onto his agent as soon as we announced Alehouse Mickey, still IMHO the worst permanent manager we've ever had (10 match minimum).

There's a certain out of work Spaniard, who's a bit disappointed with your '10 match minimum'.

I can also think of a deceased World Cup winner, in the Adams class.

Peters' time at the Lane was before I was born so I can't include him.

For what it's worth, this is my ranking. Qualifications are that they have to have been in my living memory (I've used September 1988, when I started school, as a cut off), they have to have been a permanent appointment and they have to have managed at least 10 league matches.
