Unpopular opinion: the celebrations were a bit OTT

Yesterday sort of reminded me of this:



Yes we have had a miserable season, and if its good for morale then I'm all for it, but if we put in a dire performance against Portsmouth we will all feel a bit silly.

Delighted with the win, but with how weak they were, we should expect to win 'as standard'. They are a league one club, we are not (yet). Waddle, as much as we don't like him, was right- they had a threadbare squad. We should aspire to be more than simply being better than them.

Appreciate this will probably be very unpopular and I'm in a minority I know but it did seem a bit tinpot taking team photos (even if we did it last year) and took a tiny bit of the shine away.

We (players and management) should have just walked around applauding the fans as usual and make then head down the tunnel and focus on preparing for Portsmouth.
 

There's a reason why so many of the clickbaity X accounts have mentioned it, because they know it farms engagement with people telling them that it was being celebrated like that because it's an away derby win at our biggest rivals.

Lets not pretend that they wouldn't have celebrated wildly had they won. The fact they're shit and on minus points is their own doing, we shouldn't have to tone down beating them because they're not as competitive as they were last year.

Each to their own and not seeking to take any joy away.

With that said would:

Bristol City do the same after beating Bristol Rovers 3-0 at their ground?
Nottingham Forest do the same after beating Notts County or Derby County 3-0 at their ground?
Newcastle do the same after beating Sunderland 3-0 at their ground? (maybe this season, but not last season for example)
etc. etc.

When Manchester United used to regularly beat Manchester City before 2008 they would just shrug and make their way down the tunnel afterwards. That's what I would like us to aspire to be.

Just because they would have done it doesn't mean we should. We should aspire to be better than them.

Yes we are not responsible for how rubbish they are, but that's all the more reason to have been more measured.

Were Manchester United ever mired in the bottom three of the Premier League when they used to beat Manchester City before 2008?

No, they were lightyears ahead of them and expected to win every meeting.

We might have won very comfortably in the end yesterday but that wasn't the feeling going into it at all.

If you can't celebrate beating your biggest rivals in their own back yard, then call it a day.

If this was an away win at Watford for example, I could understand the faux outrage, but it's the game that everyone in Sheffield looks out for and cares most about

I think that even now, Forest fans would do what ours did if they beat Derby 0-3 at Pride Park. Not sure about the others (second thoughts, Barcodes definitely would!!!).
 
I'm all for ramming it down their throats as much as possible. Make no mistake, they would have and would do the same to us.

This is what a proper rivallry is all about, not just some tinpot 'local' rival effort. They want us to lose and we want the same.

I want them down to the conference ASAP and for them to stay there. I don't want them to cease to exist, just forever be in our shadow (where have I heard that one before 🤫)

Yes its not quite the same, but we are, or should be lightyears ahead of SWFC.

We were on the verge of making the PL in May, they are in administration and about to go down to league one.

We have been dreadful and shameful this season and should be a bit more humble in accepting that throughout the majority of the season they have shown more fight than we have in relation to ability and resources.

The fact so many of us did not expect to win yesterday is a reflection of how embarrassing we have been. I hope we have turned a corner but there is a heck of a long way to go.

To be clear- celebrating is fine but it was a bit OTT yesterday posing for photos staying on for so long at the end etc.
 
We have nothing to play for this season other than survival and beating Wednesday.

Forget the circumstances surrounding them lot, it's irrelevant.. and certainly don't buy into their nonsense propaganda about it being "a hollow victory."

We've gone into our neighbours backyard and took the piss.
We're all in football for the memories. If we can't enjoy the good times (and they're rare and likely to get even more rare under these owners) then what's the point?

I wish we'd celebrated more.

They dominated this city for years. For now, it's still out turn.
The tide will eventually turn (it always does) and they'll have forgotten all about "hollow victories" then.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

We'll never have the level of dominance over Wednesday that Manchester United used to have over Manchester City.

Maybe if we did then we might casually parade around the pitch applauding the fans.

When did SWFC last beat us?

13 years or so. We have had great dominance over SWFC since 2017.

I don't think Man U went 13 years without losing to Man City.
 
Might be the last time a utd team play at Hillsborough so worth capturing for future generations. Permatations are, A. They don't find a buyer and cease to exist. B. They fall down the divisions never to be heard of again other than a question on quiz shows. C. They moved to a purpose built 60k stadium or D. The old slag falls down under a weight of snow this winter and is condemned. Only one of these scenarios is fantasy 😉

Bollocks. Sorry. But that's my thoughts. It's also, ironically, disrespectful to Wednesday who have took points off many sides this season.

You've got to also remember that this team is full of new players who have largely experienced loss after loss. It was a huge result yesterday,
 
I think all football celebrations are OTT these days. I thought it was OK to celebrate on Sunday - but having seen Walsall beat Harrogate Town on Saturday, I think Walsall would have given us more of a game than Wednesday did
 
If other teams and their fans don’t celebrate beating their derby rivals, especially same city ones, full heartedly and with abandon, no matter the real or perceived differences in teams.. then that says more about them and their lack of passion and local engagement. Bollox to that, celebrate long and hard when you win the biggest game of the season in their own back yard/pen.

Mate if you don't want to celebrate thats fine, but don't try and shit on other people's happiness. It's one thing to think it, another to comment, but to start a thread. Come on. Carlton yesterday pointed out yesterday how grim having a celebration police is, and he's absolutely right.
Who do you think we are? Yes we should beat on previous year's, but not only are we in the same division now for a reason, but we're in the bottom 3 'on merit' as well.
Personally I'd go nuts if we were 3 divisions above them and put them to the sword, let alone the fact they're currently relegation rivals.
