Now I am going back to when the four elderly players were the first ones to be introduced to the crowd. We are clear that two of them were Fred Furniss and Colin Collindridge, Kingy said the others were George Poole and he thinks the other one was Dennis Gratton (played some games between 1955 and 1959). Are they the right names? I hadnt heard of a George Poole who played for us so I looked up and it stated in Denis Clareborough's Complete Records book that he played two games for us during the war

That sounds like what I heard Silent, the 4 oldest surviving players I believe they said

By I must be old used to see CC playing in 1946
UTB

He signed for United in January 1939, 2 months before our 50th Anniversary!

There is a great section on Colin in Gary Armstrong and John Garrett's Biography of the club.

I expected Brian Deane to be there. Really surprised he wasn't.

The Norweigan Club he manages, Sarpsborg 08, has their last friendly today before the league starts next week. He exchanged twitter comments with Paul Walker explaining that unfortunately it just wouldn't be possible to attend.

He has recorded a video message, which must be on Sheff U tube somewhere. I haven't seen it yet but I know he's done it because it was showing in the Fan area on Cherry Street before the game.

If he could have made it, he would have.

I don't think anyone would argue that he's a true legend !

My Grandma was a Collindridge and they were a very influential familiy in the Yorkshire NUM before the war. His uncle was the MP for Barnsley.

Seems that rubbed off on Colin he had a reputation as an organiser and almost led a players strike.

Another one for the roll call - Steve Conroy & Mrs. Ringstead, -wife of the late Alf?

Never saw him play LSF but recognised his face. Not really a success at United I believe, any idea where went after us ?.
CKLM, Paddy went on to Rotherham after his largely unproductive spell with us and managed only a handful of appearances for them. He disappeared from the professional game and resurfaced on my radar playing and managing in local South Yorkshire football. He player/managed Olive Grove who were a top Sunday league team in the mid seventies.
Paddy came to SUFC looking a bit rotund for a pro footballer and carried that stature with him into non league football. Always seemed a decent bloke.

I remember on the day before we beat Birmingham by 3-0 in April 1971 my dad took me (and two older girls who lived near me) to the Lane to tour the old JSS via the players entrance (Ted Hemsley had told him to come over). The players had just finished training and Ted was guiding us round. There were players still in the changing room listening to the racing results from the transistor radio and it seemed that Paddy Buckley was the players bookmaker because he was receiving money and handing out winnings etc

Was there anything on the Blades on that episode? I record it off Sky as I am not in the area but the first section was all fecking L***s so I got bored and fell asleep. Not sure I am going to watch another episode it's such a crap programme. It's full of crap analysis, inane comments and stupid quizes that seems to be targeted at a far younger age group so why show it at 23:25? Oh, and I am getting fed up with the inane grin and the constant surprised look on Guy Mowbray's face.

Half of last night's programme was about L**ds! They did show Blades ex-players briefly. Am still trying to work out who were the two elderly men to Fred Furniss' right

I'm sure he was a decent bloke but "a bit rotund" is something of an understatement.

Would love Jan Aage and Deano to have made it - but understand there work commitments meant they were unable.

One cult hero I would have loved to have seen was Doug Hodgson - what a guy - hard as frickin nails Aussie - only player I would back bare knuckle against big bad billy!

Where was the Cult that was Terry Curran ? and Steve Faulkner ?

We couldn't afford the insurance that we would have had to pay to insure Steve against the likelihood of assassantion from the hoards of people jealous of his talent.
