This might interest some of you. I was looking for something else an thought it would be illuminating to rank our players with over a hundred appearances by goals scored per game. The top 48 takes us to Bert Partridge the only defender to average better than a goal every 5 games. The character limit led to deletions beyond there until we get to the outfield players who failed completely.

What a time the 1930s must have been and how did George Green get through 438 appearances without once finding the net?

I find it amazing how relative few 1-in-2 strikers are. I’m as guilty as anyone for using that as a metric for good strikers. It it would do us all a favour to remember how actually rare that feat is.
Its clearly not genetic, Harry Johnson's brother Tom is at the other end of the table.

Green scored 10 goals. I think you mean Bill Cook :-)

Interesting to see Harold Brook, Colin Collindridge and Jimmy Hagan so close together on just over 1 in 3, All lost 6 seasons of their careers to the war.
On Harold Brook, I always remember the story in Bladerunners where in the 50s players would wait for a telegram at the end of the season to learn if they'd been retained or not. When Brook (he had been top scorer) received his saying he was being released, his wife had given birth earlier that morning. Different times!

My wife's Aunt lived on a street at Intake where United rented houses for half of the team. I wasn't just a case of losing your job.
