I think there's a difference where someone has had a stellar playing career and looks like they have good managerial attributes. Its reasonable in that situation to give them their first job. As well as Weir, we've appointed Peters, Bruce, Speed and Spackman in that situation, to mixed results.
When, however, you have a bloke with managerial experience with an average to poor record with (mainly) clubs lower down to League, giving him the job seems bizzare.
I'm vert sceptical about this talk of "ethos". If your "ethos" doesn't get results, I don't really care how theoretically pleasing it is.
Just out of interest how would you compare it to the appointment of David Weir at the time? For me that was one of the worst appointments going, least this guy has an ethos which hopefully the players buy into
