Wouldn't say "excellent" Bassett taking us from the 3rd to the top flight AND keeping us there 4 years working for a bunch of thieves and dodgy penny pinchers was what I'd class as "excellent" my last memory of Warnock is him shitting his pants for a full season away from home and signing players in Jan that were unacceptable signings, then in the week leafing up to Wigan going on about his "deal" unforgivable losing that game
I said 'overall'. I wouldn't judge him by the final week of the 06/07 season.

The Dave Bassett era was absolutely amazing and in many ways the complete opposite to last seasons inept attempt at possession based football.
Bassett assembled a team of players who suited an up and at ‘em long ball, direct style of play, had round pegs in round holes.Deane and Agana were the perfect partnership, the style of play was anti establishment, but it was exciting, got results and produced one of the more successful eras in our history and the passion displayed on the pitch created an equally passionate response in the stands.
Conversely, Wilder has bought into the modern mantra that there is only one style of football to play. He has persevered with it despite, it being patently obvious that he does not possess the players from front to back, to utilise that style successfully. The lack of pace means that, what is meant to be a quick, one touch, fluid, fast style of play is all to often turgid, hesitant, predictable, risk averse and boring in its delivery. Once again, the spectacle on the pitch is mirrored by the atmosphere in the ground.
In my opinion, it was all to obvious that we needed to tweak our style of play to suit the players at our disposal or utilise the transfer windows to strengthen the areas of weakness. Wilder stuck to his guns and seemingly hoped to stumble over the promotion line with what we had and what resulted, should be his legacy.

Our style of play was set by knill because of the brilliance that Souttar was in in defence and it worked very effectively so no need to change. Souttar wasn’t replaced and we didn’t adapt to another pattern and instead we continued to play the same way. My posts said as much months ago when I said we had the attacking players to play another way. If he’s still here is first job is to get a Souttar style player even if he costs 5m and then look at what areas we need further forward as they will sell and fingers crossed the board don’t bring in another couple of players found in teams from a league in Uzbekistan. Interestingly most on here slated me for berating previous owners but if the board bring in tons of AI players this summer I’ll be going mental again.
I agree, up to a point. Souttar was immense but, for me set the pattern of CW being happy to let teams come on to us and we score on the break because, he made us rock solid. Fine in the Championship but, if we are trying to build a team and style of play that gives us half a chance of PL survival, that isn’t it - we’d be murdered every week. We finished 9th through attacking, with overlapping wingbacks and relentless, aggressive pressing - thats the style I’d like to see

Recipe for a season wasted.

Gamble of changing now outweighs gamble of wasting a season to stand still until we’ve lost parachute payments
still think the board will give wilder one last go at it 56 although personally i think the time is right now for a change of culture at the lane really hope im wrong but just cant see it happening this time round for chris

We should find out this week. If the owners want clarity of vision which is very strong in the American business mind they need to set out that vision and how they are going to set up for it over the next 7 weeks, yes 7 weeks!

Totally agree. We finished 9th because we had the edge physically (outworked teams) and the edge tactically (no one really schemed for our over-lapping CBs in that first season).

How/what edge are we going to take with us next time? Definition of insanity would be to go up and hope splurging c£50m on new players is going to shift that dial.

We need to innovate and be creative. Id love Tufty to roll back to 2018 and come up with new stuff, but the last 18 months have me doubting whether he can do that this time....

Our staying up was built on defensive solidity. Most games we just kept in them and nicked results.

Bang on!

Sunderland will have an all time low points and Leeds will be relegated and not close to staying up whereas Burnley have a chance as the bottom six teams in the premier league if they were playing in the championship would have shipped far more than 15 goals.
Burnley have already lost 1/3 of their defensive core. The other 2/3 want out. They'd have conceded far more than 15 goals in the Championship without Trafford, Estève and Egan-Riley, let alone in the top flight.

Which is insanity as we’ll have invested into the squad for players he wanted.
One thing that's been fairly consistent is the suggestion that the owners want to limit Wilder's influence over transfers. I think the purcahse of Cannon will be used to reinforce that as his stats will be miles off what's required for one of the most expensive Championship signings last season.

Well Wilder is on the train down to st pancras station this morning (been sent a picture of him reading the paper). Meeting with Bettis and the owners? Who knows.
Sun or Mail. Guaranteed.

It really wasn’t. We used to harass and press teams constantly. We were one of the fittest sides in the league. A far cry from our fitness levels now.
Agreed - Fitness & also not to be forgotten - leaders across the pitch. From Henderson / O’Connell / Baldock / Fleck / Sharp …… heads never went down.

Why does Wilder going to London mean he's been sacked? He could be off to meet one of our former players to sign them back
I dont believe he's being sacked. Meeting with the owners likely. Las palmas does fly into Manchester though....

How many goals did we score? We had a good defence and keeper and we didn’t have fitter players the premiership teams, they were good championship players.

I agree, one way or another, we need to find out this week,
I think it's time for a different approach, new ideas, last chance nxt season with parachute payments,
don't think these owners have purchased united to see us in the middle of the championship, for the foreseeable future, along with the likes of Norwich and West brom,
but i do think if nothing happens, before the transfer Window reopens, on June 16th then the likelihood is they will probably stick with Chris and see where we are around October
And if we need to make a change, hope that where not too far back
