The Dave Bassett era was absolutely amazing and in many ways the complete opposite to last seasons inept attempt at possession based football.
Bassett assembled a team of players who suited an up and at ‘em long ball, direct style of play, had round pegs in round holes.Deane and Agana were the perfect partnership, the style of play was anti establishment, but it was exciting, got results and produced one of the more successful eras in our history and the passion displayed on the pitch created an equally passionate response in the stands.
Conversely, Wilder has bought into the modern mantra that there is only one style of football to play. He has persevered with it despite, it being patently obvious that he does not possess the players from front to back, to utilise that style successfully. The lack of pace means that, what is meant to be a quick, one touch, fluid, fast style of play is all to often turgid, hesitant, predictable, risk averse and boring in its delivery. Once again, the spectacle on the pitch is mirrored by the atmosphere in the ground.
In my opinion, it was all to obvious that we needed to tweak our style of play to suit the players at our disposal or utilise the transfer windows to strengthen the areas of weakness. Wilder stuck to his guns and seemingly hoped to stumble over the promotion line with what we had and what resulted, should be his legacy.
