He should be a very good player at Championship level.

The obvious concern is the lack of playing time, but I could see him coming in and playing well due to being a better player than those he’d face in the Championship.

Seems a bit of a gamble, but we’d still have Anel, Robinson and Gilchrist if he doesn’t work out.

This. It's a bit puzzling why some (cough Morgs cough) are getting their knickers in a twist about him. He's been a steady Prem defender for years now. He's not playing for his current club due to a fallout with the manager, not due to his ability.

Yes, his fitness/sharpness may be an issue, but here are the other plausible options:
1) Dunne - apparently come into his own at RB. Club asking for too much.
2) Darling - not a bad option, but questions remain about his ability to step up.
3) Tanganga - will cost an absolute fortune and will probably not want to come at this stage.

Holding is far from a terrible option.

Assuming he's fit, it looks like his Palace stats are kinda irrelevant - Had a tiff with the Palace Gaffer

'Rob Holding's career at Crystal Palace has come to a standstill after a disagreement with manager Oliver Glasner. Just over a year after his £4m move from Arsenal, Holding is training with the club's under-21s, a separate entity from the first team, and has been completely frozen out of first-team activities. The disagreement, reportedly stemming from a post-match running session, has created a significant rift between Holding and Glasner, with the manager stating the matter will remain private. Holding's lack of appearances for the first team, coupled with Palace's acquisition of several new centre-backs, means his future at Selhurst Park looks bleak.

Adding fuel to the fire, Holding has purged all Crystal Palace references from his social media accounts, further indicating a complete breakdown in the relationship. Despite the impasse, he's reportedly maintaining professionalism while training with the U21s. However, the path back to the first team seems impossible, even with Palace's struggles this season. The situation presents a complex puzzle with questions surrounding the specifics of the disagreement, Holding's contract, and his future prospects. As the January transfer window approaches, the football world will be watching to see if a solution can be found for the former Arsenal defender.'

At the risk of becoming a joke, this is via Gemini.

Is that a serious question?
Yes of course

I keep reading about the shortcomings of JLT and then the disbelief that we are signing a player who has hardly played for ages and has been frozen out (not my words btw) at Palace .

JLT is currently playing well for a top 2 side Camps club and is captain -

Also worth mentioning that his previous club was Arsenal.
A club that happily stockpile players and give them Cup/European games over league games

18 months without a professional appearance.
Prior to that, at Arsenal, he got 560 league minutes in 22/23 season. Equivalent to a little-over 6 games.

In the last 2.5 seasons, 6 games of domestic league football and none in the last 18 months.
Dropping in, mid-season, to a promotion campaign which requires several 3-game-week turnarounds.

With our injury record, you'd think it would be a signing we'd swerve.

If he was on a free transfer, and this was June I'd perhaps see some sense in it. But this is our most important signing of the season and not one to take a punt on.

We should be spending the extra bit of cash on a ready-made CB that Wilder wants (and maybe saving the foreign AI punts for the Summer also...).

having built up all my giddiness on Tanganga or Dunne it does feel a like a swift kick in the old clacker bag getting Holding in on loan . to me like others have said doesn't make sense if its a loan deal unless we sending someone back . he's lack of proper game time is also worrying ,

It was Arsenal. You'd hardly expect us to be getting a former Arsenal regular in his prime years? Anyone in that squad who got a fair number of minutes must be capable. A reductive way of looking at it true, but not unfair.

Yes, his recent match minutes are far from ideal, but players do not lose ability or sense of the game that quickly. Was he capable 18 months ago?

It's likely to be a free transfer.

And I don't like this response as it's up the clubs' scouting system, but I still have to ask, who should we be going for instead?

Holding should be a class above in this league, like when Craig Short and Paul McGrath played for us, they were old but looked class because they were just better players.

As long as he is injury free and match fit, I don’t see any need to be concerned about his ability to perform.

Given his situation at Palace I don't think there will be much of a fee involved It will be just a matter of wages and contract length. His age means after this season he has one more contract. Surely it is beneficial for him to come to us even if he is only on the bench. As cover how bad can he be? RND isn't the solution he is not a CB in a two and I think Gilchrist would only really work in a three.

Just found this on Holding as reasons why he's been frozen out:

That would explain why Palace are saying they don't want a Loan. I can see them cutting ties and we get him for free, or a nominal fee.

Then TransferMarkt have him down as "suspended", which i guess means by Crystal Palace, not the FA / PL.

I'm sure Roy will find out from their fans what Suspended meant if we do get him.

Well said

But some think he’s a better option than Robbo 🫤

In fact - 80% of our fan base

Just listening to the transfer deadline day latest bulletin on Talksport radio.

Just said and I quote

‘Rob Holding looks likely to be joining Sheffield United today”.
‘We understand that the out of favour Crystal Palace defender is keen on the move”

Apparently he’s a Manchester lad (from Stalybridge which is this side of the Pennines) so should feel at home moving back up north.

Imagine Robinson (or Anel for that matter) man marking Haaland

Did a pretty good job in semi final and the games last against haaland(who's only mustered up 1 goal against us).

Semi final he didn't even get a sniff, just they forgot to mark the other players such as marhez 😂.

I don't think JLT would have a problem hurling Haaland to the ground, being outpaced by him, pulling his shirt and being beaten in the air by him. And Anel just loves a game of tuggy shirts. May as well keep our money and stay as we are if that footage is anything to go by.
