8 years ago today....October 18th 2005, and a joyous trip to Millwall.

United run out 4-0 winners, with Danny Ebber (2), Vincent Pericard and Alan Quinn with the goals.

Who is this Ebber to whom you refer ? :-)

We put out half a reserve team that night - our first choice forwards were Shipperley and Kabba and we played Webber and Pericard. I remember after the game the Millwall manager complaining that he couldn't possibly compete with a team having resources like that....

Great LB night out! I was working and staying over in Didcot so trained it in and back on the last train. People in Didcot couldn't get their heads round a) going to That London after work, b) going to football and c) going to the delights of Millwall...

Was a top night, totally unexpected display of real quality from, as Darren said, half our first team.

Good drinking in London Bridge, one of the last big away nights before I headed back to pastures North ;)

I don't know if this is right, but I also think the reserve full backs were playing - Geary and Wright - our first teamers then being Bromby and Kozluk.

Two for today:

one for the young uns 16 years ago 1997, a 5-1 home win against Stockport, Whitehouse, Deane and a Fjortoft hat-trick.

and one for the old uns, 55 years ago 1958, a 6-2 away win in North Wales, against Rhyl, Russell (2), Pace (2), Simpson and Ringstead. Programme worth anything between £30-£40.

22 years ago today 1991, and our dreams of Zenith Data Systems Cup glory are ended in a dramatic penalty shoot out against Notts County at the Lane. With the scores tied at 3-3 (Whitehouse 2, Gayle), United contrive to miss 4 penalties from 5, Whitehouse, Hoyland, Gannon and Mendonca had their penalties saved, only Lake managed to score. Phil Kite did his best saving two spot-kicks but alas it was to no avail.

Back 31 years today 1982, an a trip down to the west country.

A 3-0 win for the Blades with Colin Morris getting all three.

October 24th 1970. Hull 1 Blades 1
My third away league match (after Leicester in March and at Brum on 10th Oct) and my second time on the train special. Both teams were strong contenders for promotion. Early in the game Ken Wagstaffe (always scores against us) broke through, Hodgy came out of goal, Waggy, cool as a cucumber feinted a shot which caused Hodgy to dive one way and the shot was placed towards the other side to give Hull the lead. In the 2nd half, a long throw in by Geoff Salmons was half cleared and TC met the ball at the edge of the penalty box but his left foot didnt have a good connection to the ball but it was good enough to fool all the players and Ian McKechnie (Hull's keeper) in the box as all stood still watching the ball trickle slowly towards the far post before it hit the post and into the net

56 years ago, 1957 and the Centenary Match played at Bramall Lane between Sheffield FC and Queen's Park.
Here we have a ticket, programme and the Banquet brochure held at the Cutlers Hall in the Evening.

The Sheffield team was made up of amateurs from Sheffield Club, Barnsley, Harrogate Railway, Accrington Stanley, Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, Pegasus, Manchester United and Billy Russell of the Blades.

The game finished 2-2

Yes, Hull were quite keen around this time, they didn't take no prisoners, literally, the return match which they won in March 2-1 at the Lane, no doubt many will recall, is when they went round kicking the s**t out of us. Here's the programme from the the 1-1 draw

30th October 1971 Bladees 1 Liverpool 1

TC scored one of the best ever goals I have ever seen. It was a rocket shot from 40 yards that Ray Clemence had no chance of stopping. Kevin Keegan's equaliser just after half time can be seen in the link below (unfortunately TC's goal is not shown in this clip)

Bert was at that game and still has the programme along with about 3,000 others stored in the Bert garage.
In those days the football specials pulled up right outside the ground although Bert once did go to Hull around that era. We had to walk from the city centre to the ground, most of the journey was spent ducking from bottles chucked at us by the locals. Them were t'days.

OK I'm back normal service resumed hopefully.

October 31st 1992, 21 years ago today...A 2-1 win away at that s***hole that was Stamford Bridge.

Lovely picture of Dennis on the front. (lol)

Littlejohn and Deane the scorers infront of 13,763

SEB remembers a trip in the 70s up to Newcastle and the specials drop meant a fairly short walk (escorted of course) to the ground. It went passed blocks of flats (more akin to tenement buildings) which if memory serves was called St James' Park Flats. The missiles from those flats were qute scary and SEB is sure up at the front end of the group a TV landed (big buggers in those days).

31st Oct 1970 Blades 2 Carlisle 2

We led by 2 goals (at the Kop End) at half time. a powerful crosshot by Woody on the right was touched in by Dearden (most in the BLUT thought Woody had scored) and Tudor headed in a Woody corner for the second. The late Cricketer/Footballer Chris Balderstone (he played test matches against West Indies in 1976) reduced the arrears and there was enough time for Warnock's big mate, Stan Ternent, to level the scores. Sitwell has mentioned a few times that this match was the first he went to

Ok been away for a few days so here's November's memories so far:

I remember the Lane encounter..I think we were unbeaten at home and Hull had the likes of Ken Knighton ex pork, and Chris Chilton...could have had Stuart Pearson aswell but not sure. They were riding high just behind us in about 4th place,so big game on a Tuesday night with around 42thousand packed into the Lane...I was stood on the Lane end with my Dad...a few Hull fans around us but seemed more Blades, but no trouble apart from on the pitch, where Hull seemed to be partaking in a Kung Fu style of X rated anti football by kicking the man rather than the ball.I've never seen a dirtier team than they were that night.

The teams for that night were; John Hope, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley, David Powell, Eddie Colquhoun, Trevor Hockey, Alan Woodward, David Ford, Bill Dearden, TC, Gil Reece, sub : Geoff Salmons. Hull: Ian McKechnie, Bill Baxter, Roger DeVries, Billy Wilkinson, Terry Neill (player-manager), Chris Simpkin, Malcolm Lord, Ken Knighton (later to play for Wendy), Chris Chilton, Ken Wagstaff, Ian Butler.

Early in the game, Gil Reece gave us the lead beating Ian McKechnie to a bouncing ball to poke it into the net at the Kop End. Hull (especially Bill Baxter- nasty ex-Ipswich player who had a fight with Bobby Robson in the manager's office after being dropped from a 1st team game-, Terry Neill, Chris Simpkin and Ken Knighton) were playing dirty and we relitiated back. After about 30 minutes of the game, the ref blew his whistle and called all players to the centre circle to ask them to "cut out the rough stuff" but Hull took no notice of the ref's warning and carried on playing dirty. In the 2nd half Chris Simpkin equalised with a powerful shot. Near the end, Ken Wagstaff (always scored against us) got the winner

Yes Billy Baxter that was it ha,ha..so Pearson wasn't playing then.
I remember the Carlisle game aswell with Balderstone playing for them, but before that we played Bolton in a 2-2 I think..I remember going with some mates on the JSET and it was like a monsoon.I'm sure the game was called off early due to the rain although late enough for the result to stand. It must have been an unusually early kick off aswell,as I'm sure it was in midweek but not a night game...don't know why,it's just how I remember it.

Just looked it up..the Bolton game I was thinking about was probably the season before where we lost 1-0,and a Saturday game...the 2-2 was a night game 70/71 season.
My minds playing tricks.

Bert went to an away defeat at Bolton on a Saturday around that era. According to the Bert memory it was Hodgy's last league game for us.

Think you are right Bert,John Hope took over around then.

Our home defeat to Bolton in March 1970 was played in miserable weather. it was our 3rd defeat in a row (we lost in the next game too at Blackpool). That run cost our chances of automatic promotion. Early in thee game we thought Woody had scored direct from a corner but the ref ruled it out as the thought Colquhoun fouled the keeper at the near post. John Manning scored for Bolton. In that 2-2 draw in October 1970, we led by two goals from Colquhoun and Dearden but Bolton pulled a goal back. Late in the game a bad backpass by Len Badger let in Ron Phillips to equalise. Len sunk to his knees and covered his face with his hands in horror

Yes, John Tudor (his last league match for us too) scored for us in the first minute but a cracking goal by Ian Seddon levelled the score. late in the game Paul Fletcher (who looked offside) got the winner. I was sick in the car on the way back home! Highlights of the game was shown on YTV in the next day. When we played at Bolton in the FA Cup (Carney got our goal) under Bryan Robson there was a plea in the programme asking anyone who has footage of that match in 1971

Cheers SB,I got mixed up between the 2 games.I can remember the bad weather at the first game, but also the 2-2 scoreline at the following season.Blackpool was my first away game, sat in the main stand.

OK, who remember's sitting round the tele once a year on wednesday night watching the 5 a side from Wembley. They used to have nets about 3 ft high but 8 yards wide.

38 years ago today. 5th November 1975.

If anyone knows our results from that year, squad and goalscorers then let me know.
