It has got to be a huge advantage for these young players to be on the field with each other. They know each others games and actually trust each other. I think it is quite interesting that Wilder when he came in picked the likes of Brookes and Arblaster. I don't really recall him bringing youngsters through when he was with us before. I guess he had nothing to lose and in the past when going for promotions everything to lose.

We also sold the better ones (Ramsdale, Adams, Brooks, Calvert Lewin). I can only think of Slater that made it and could've been given more game time.Maybe Ben Whiteman? We were a top Champ/Prem team though and they haven't reached that level since.

In McCabe's book he makes a big point about having wanted more academy players to play and be trusted under every manager he employed. A manager (Adams or Wilson iirc) is quoted as saying something along the lines of - but what did any of them I didn't play from my tenure do in the game? The answer was very little

For all the great runs and attacking intent, we need end product from them.
Andre Brooks fluffed his lines a couple of times when coming inside, not for the first time this season. He's got a decent strike on him, he needs to use it.
Yes, I accept the end product wasn’t quite there. But the energy levels ramped up when they came on, and they had me out of my seat on more than one occasion.

Just to temper things on Seriki...while he's shown huge strides in development and will be a very useful addition to what in essence is a smaller squad, there is absolutely no way in any universe he starts ahead of Gilchrist.

Defensive solidarity must come first and with 3 clean sheets in a row, the starting shirt is firmly on Gilchrists shoulders

He’s like Bogle but better also good defending that last ditch tackle when Derby had a break on

Feriki over Gilchrist for me offers way more whether a player is on loan and has been paid for with a decent loan fee shouldn’t matter

Play seriki and we have a Djed Spence player on our books 🤷‍♂️
If his attitude remains as good it currently seems, he is nothing like Djed Spence.

For what reason? Because Gilchrist is highly rated by chelsea?

They are both good players but Seriki looks better defending and attacking for me

Squad game, there will be games where we start with one and finish with another in that position to reduce injury risk

The youngsters (and Wilder) must be on this forum. Seriki looks to be another one who has read the comments this summed about the squad being too light and just gone "hold my beer"

Whether he should start or not doesn't matter. At some point this season Gilchrist will need a break, get injured or get a suspension. I think we would all now feel comfortable with Seriki starting if needed and then it's up to him to keep it.

This is exactly how it should be and one of the most exciting things about this squad.

Might just need One to try and make the same step up as he is a unit who could offer an alternative to Moore when he needs a rest.

This is the thing, I’ve read a lot here the last few weeks about certain players v another player. It’s not that binary anymore. It’s a squad game now more than ever

With 5 subs and a bench of 9, the whole starters and finishers concept should be embraced much more.

With a week between games it’s not as critical now, but with games getting longer due to added time, more bookings and suspensions, there are additional factors to just a straight swap to see a game out because a player is flagging. It’s preventative as much as anything and should also be proactive in terms of bringing players in to put the opposition back against the wall.

Peck, Seriki, Brooks, RND, Campbell or Brewster from the bench are all capable and know their jobs which can be like for like or a difference tactically.

We have a young squad but also developing depth,

At the time of the substitution I thought it was an odd one. Only 1-0 up and making a defensive change bringing a relatively untried youngster on. Got to be an injury was my conclusion.
At full time I noticed Gilchrist had his whole thigh heavily strapped.
Seriki's first touch had me face palming but the lad settled down superbly defensively and used his attacking gifts to the full advantage.
Nicely stacked at right back once again.

McCabe might be telling the truth but he would still have sacked a manager if the results were poor because of playing more youngsters. Fans would have put pressure on him to do so and makes fans partly responsible. What is needed is a clear long term plan that is communicated to the fans. For example - "our target for this season is to gain promotion to the EPL, however given the finances of the club & the ever increasing costs of buying players/paying players the club will also be looking to integrate players from the academy into the first team squad. The club will be sending fewer young players on loan to other clubs as it believed they are more likely to develop and gain experience here. We shall endeavour to reward our best Academy players with long term contracts that recognise their value and so as to protect our these assets. However it should be noted that we will not stand in the way of players personal careers and this may mean occasionally some of our players will be sold."

I disagree, it's horses for courses as much as managing fitness.

Gilchrist is regularly blowing past the 60 minute mark, might be an idea to use this as an opportunity to start Seriki and rest Gilchrist a bit. He's got to build his fitness up to right back Championship standards slowly. Also having him on hand to protect a lead (hopefully) away at Fratton Park off the bench is not a bad idea at all.

100% Gilchrist has to be our starting RB this season (at least at the moment), his positioning in defence is spot on 9 times out of 10, same goes for his other defensive abilities.

He is a better defender than Seriki as well as being further along in his own development, even though this will be his first full season of consistent first team football, same with Peck.

Even if Seriki's game time this season is just the occasional start ahead of Gilchrist and coming off the bench, that will enhance his development as he'll learn from Gilchrist as well, think how Ndiaye learned from MGW that season.

Come summer next year (especially if we don't get Gilchrist back), we could be looking at Seriki being ready to make the step up as our first choice RB.

Seriki Is a reight player , he’s looking bigger and stronger with every month that passes, I think he is unlucky that Gilchrist has come ( also a reight player ) when Gilchrist goes we have a fantastic replacement ready !!

i think wilders got it spot on with gilchrist and seriki give gilchrist 65 then get seriki on to run at tiring defenders and would do it other way round with brooks and rak-saki
I don’t think he trusts Rak-Saki as much to cover Seriki. Brooks is very defensively aware for a young player. That double sub might be something that we see a lot this season.

rak-saki is nowhere near brooks ability wise imo in fact him and ohare have been our poorest performers in the last 2 games brooks every time for me

Delighted to see the youngsters playing 3 at once is brilliant especially since they were so good. I thought Brooks has improved a lot since moving over to the right.

He looked like a fish out of water when he made his debut and didn't seem to do a lot on either of his loan spells either but fair play to him, he seems to have come on leaps and bounds.

Whenever he's played this season, he's not looked out of place to the point of actually looking very good at times.

We need the academy to produce players who are capable of playing for the first team otherwise there's no point having one and we're doing that at the moment with the likes of Seriki, Peck, Arblaster, Brooks and RND before them who's still here.

I don’t think I’ve posted this before elsewhere, but I watched RakSaki closely against Derby because I was interested in what he could do to unlock a defence. That lead me to actually watching him when out of possession. Mostly on an aimless wander. Disappointed. In possession it seems to me that Brooks had the greater confidence to take his man on. I was expecting more from RS. Still, we’re all allowed an off day.

he hasnt had a good one yet get brooks back in at pompey

I see a trend developing. A gentle reminder that:

Brooks: Good Rak-Sakai: Bad
