Pre-Season 2024/25 Chesterfield v. Sheffield United - 20th July 2024

All the young players have done well in pre-season so far (except Sachdev today who played a bit like he had his boots on the wrong feet with the laces tied together when he came on) but bringing on someone like O'Hare just shows what a big step up there still is from the level where most of them are currently at to where we need them to be. Hopefully we keep a few of them heavily involved this season and can get good loans for a few of the others as they're almost all already Chesterfield level at worst.

If Bogle hadn't been leaving I wonder if Seriki would even have got on the pitch today, either way he got an opportunity and did well with it.

Who else ‘should’ (could) we have extended ?
I’d have liked us to have kept Baldock (we now don’t have a RB), Wes, Jebbison and McBurnie out of the ones who we’ve currentlly let go, lost to better offers or not extended.

At least with Bogle we’re getting some money rather than him running his deal down another season, that’s a positive for me as long as it buys a decent RB or someone with a few goals in them.

With hindsight I wonder if Abdullah still thinks his strategy of letting players get into the last year of their contracts is a good one for football teams?!

Apart from Adam Davies have we extended anyone else?
Arblaster, Faxon, Tinsdale, Bogle, Freckleton and Easton.
Peck?

I’m referring to the end of the contracts. The in season ones for Bogle and Arblaster were good signings, the rest are young lads, you wouldn’t expect them to turn us down.

Osula got smacked with a thunderbolt of a shot from one of our players!! Just before h/t.

Alblaster was knobbled by a couple of hefty challenges and was limping off slightly… think just a precaution.

I didn’t see the game and I don’t know how injured OA was. He went off on 60 mins, but that was the plan anyway. He was always going to do just 60 mins today

Like Lowe, Bogle’s contract was up in June but we decided to extend his.
Faxon was linked with Liverpool and Manchester United before signing his contract and Peck is highly rated.
Freckleton was out of contract but signed his last week.

I’m glad we extended Bogle’s because we’re now getting a fee for him, it’s weird how he’s now had his head turned though.

The others are unproven youngsters, hopefully time will prove them good long term signings.

I still think we probably should have kept a few of the experienced players unless we are looking to make 10 signings in the next 3 weeks.

Nine players under the age of 25 in the Spanish squad.
So incomparable to the players we've got. Here's some of the lads you're talking about for context:

Alex Baena - Villarreal - 76 first team appearances
Williams - A. Bilbao - 103 1st team appearances
Pedri - 1st team debut in 2nd Division as a 16 year old - signed by Barca less than a month later - already at 99 1st team appearances despite an atrocious injury record
Ferran Torres - Barcelona - made Copa Del Rey La Liga debut as a 17 year old at Valencia - only 24 and has already played for Man City and Barcelona
Yamal - Barcelona - so good he was the youngest player to feature for Barca's 1st team since 1922
Fermin Lopez - Barcelona - 1 developmental loan - La Liga debut at 20 years old - 30 1st team appearances last season

These are so drastically different to the kids we've got, who are getting loans to Alfreton, Forest Green and Burton. Many of them are coming through what many would call the greatest academy in the world in La Masia, while we still have to worry about players being snapped away from us (e.g. Lankshear).

Ignoring specific examples, the sheer reluctance of both managers and fans to give anyone a go who isn't the complete finished article is truly baffling. How exactly do any of you all think we will ever step up to the next level, in lieu of someone with trillions taking us over, without either having the bollocks to give kids a run and have them potentially appreciate in value exponentially?

Aye
Don’t disagree
But;
I’d summise that Baldock was never going to sign another contract given opportunities offered by Panathinaikos , Jebbison appeared (& subsequently confirmed) he didn’t wish to stay; Wes & McB appear to have a different view of their worth (salary &/or length of contract ?) to that of the club (can ‘afford’)
I remain intrigued as at what juncture the club ‘should’ have sought to ‘re- negotiate’ Bogle’s contract &/or whether we endeavoured to do so (ref Illiman, Berge, & aforementioned Jebbison)

It is great to see our talented youngsters get some game time, and if we can get them to stay interested longer term all the better. However, I'm not too excited after beating Chessie 3-0. Their defence, and particularly their goalie, were gash. Thank God we made the most of our chances. Yet again we have has a totally disrupted pre-season. We still need several new experienced players to add to this squad. Our defence is looking incredibly weak. Apart from JLT I cannot see anyone good enough for the championship in the ranks. And last year our defence was a laughing stock. Albeit against top class opposition. Cmon Chris, you were a defender, you must see the horror show that awaits if we don't get some experienced championship defenders in very soon.
The so called teckova? WTF is going on PA? Just give us some hope you care a bit for this historic club instead of trying to line your own pockets.

If they are good enough they will play.
Fact.
Some fans, you appear to be one, seem to think our academy players are great, ready to just slot straight in.
yet several have hardly played a game in men’s football, and others that have hardly set their world alight! Fact is, there are kids like them at every team in our league, and believe it or not there will probably be far better at other clubs of comparable age.

Most top players go out on loan at some point. Some several times before deemed ready for their owning club. What makes ours so special?

Boils down to fans viewing through rose tinted glasses again.

This sums it up perfectly for me.

A lot of u21’s from up and down the league pyramid will end up as non-league players at best, our fans seem to think that we have 10 players who are almost Championship level ready before kicking a ball in that league.
