John Egan

We seem to be hanging on to players 12 - 18 months too long. Need to evolve far better than this.

I mean in the case of Egan it's situational. He's never let us down in the Championship. He's never had the pace in the Premier League. Given we're not in the Premier League next season, then an additional year seems absolutely fine while we look to transition to younger players

Makes good sense and glad to see this approach.

I've been a big fan of JE throughout and was really pleased when we signed him but we don't owe him charity.

We've paid him handsomely over his contracts and we now desperately need to turn around this OTT injury crisis we've had for too long.

Supposedly we’ve got a wage cap of £15k under the current ownership on new deals (could be a load of shit but we’re in that part of the season). No chance Egan will be on the same terms he was.
Where has this little nugget come from

Good. Pleased with the club for once if this is true and we are taking a tougher stance re contracts. For too.long we have flushed money down the shitter, especially with serial crocks (Egan isn't one by the way before someone gets upset). But he has had a long lay off and needs to prove himself. About time we started making contracts with SUFC hard to come by if you aren't performing week in week out. Like Egan, but prove your worth and fitness first. Don't like it? Move him on.

He also went swanning off to play for Ireland carrying that injury which probably led to the tendon problem keeping him out for the season. For me he put country before club ,no way was he fit to play for Ireland in them 2 matches an experienced pro like him should have rested ! Instead played full match and then a few days later couldn't finish the following match as the injury took its toll..
Not surprised the club are making sure he is 100% recovered.

I wouldn’t be too bothered if we had to let Egan go although we don’t have the funds to replace with better.

Defensively he has good qualities but he was always frustrating with the ball. His first thought would always be launch it clear or out of play. One of the worst offenders for turning over possession.

RND is 24 Egan is 31 probably a good reason.
Yes I agree, Egan has a wealth of experience in the championship though & I presume we’d only be looking at a 2 year deal.

RND was talking about his career essentially being over & did his hammy again within 3 games. Obviously we don’t know what he earns, but given his injury record it could be £3-5k down the drain every week which right now isn’t something we can afford to do

I think you are glossing over some of his cock ups over the last two championship seasons
And recall him being found out for pace and the ball over the top on many occasions

He's been out injured long term, but before that he was pretty much ever present for years, so hardly injury prone. 31 years old is probably not far off the prime for a centre back, he's got invaluable experience and is proper captain material. Top Championship performer who also had a great season in the Premier League and is one of the few that didn't disgrace himself in the two following ones either (hardly played the last one which plays into his hands on this point).

All things considered, we'd be absolutely stupid to not at least let him prove his fitness and put a contract on the table while he does so. This writing him off now are massively jumping the gun for me.

That's about right if we're looking to trim the wage bill to make us sustainable without relying on parachute payments for the foreseeable future.

If a squad of 25 players were all on £15k per week then that's just under £20mil a year on wages. That would still put us as one of the highest wage bills in the Championship. Ignoring the three who went up last season, the next highest wage bill was Norwich with £24mil a year.

If we're maxing out at £15k then ours would be a lot less than £20mil as we're not going to pay everyone £15k per week. Our would be somewhere around £17mil.

It's sensible to install a salary cap as spending is out of control in the Premier League and starting to get out of hand in the Championship.

You think we should give him a contract even if he might never play?

He’s 32 in October too. So the same age Jake Wright was when we were back in the Championship.

It’s a big risk and a lot of the reasons to keep him are based on things that happened 2-5 years ago.

32 isn't particularly old for a centre back, especially when you're looking for experience and leadership qualities which Egan has. He's our only player over 30 at present, and you do actually need some of those.

It is when most will have retired/dropped to the lower leagues by 33/34. More so when you’ve not played in 10 months and more so when you weren’t blessed with pace to begin with.

You don’t need a player of any particular age. You do need them with particular skills and to be available to play. Other players are available with leadership and experience, who are yet to prove their fitness after a long time out.

The club know all of this, which is why we’ve done what we have.

You'll be able to provide some examples then? When was the last time we conceded a goal because Egan was beaten by a ball over the top?

I rate Egan and consider his presence to have been badly missed last season.

But he will have to prove his fitness to any club, including ours !!!
