I was terrified when we were heading into a playoff semi vs brentford. living in London and having seen us there this season, we'd have no chance over 2 games.

But....fate has conspired to put us into 5th. We play Yeovil and I'm convinced we'll do them.

That'll leave us a broke Brentford (after today) or Swindon (who we're better than).

We're going to do it this year. Just you watch.

*I haven't been much this season and I have only been to one playoff final, so I'm allowed to be optimistic without having to wear a tin hat.

** puts on tin hat.

stop being enthusiastic , its frowned upon
yes we might have a chance , but dont go saying football can be quirky , and results random, no one will believe you

youre proper jacobs!

nothing unlucky this year, were just crap.
yeovil will beat us without breaking sweat.
seasons over, nothing to see here.
go to bed folks. make babies!
see you all next year for a relegation battle.

well it worked for palace against us , lets not forget they were as dog shit as we were , till Hoskins hit n hope

its all it takes , 90 minutes of dross and one moment of fortune

If...IF.... We get to Wembley I have no enthusiasm to go there.
How shit is that?? I can remember going to the semi v's the pigs and just being soooooooo excited at going to Wembley!

How times have changed( or I have )

I never thought I could be as despondent as I was after going there last year!
Now I feel like I have to go to the playoff games even though it will be a futile experience I suspect!

Actually, we probably will. Solely because I'm beyond caring. I assume we played today. I haven't even checked the result. But I'll assume it was uninspiring.

im pleased we ended up 5th, i think we'll have more chance against yeovil, but its really a lottery.

we havent scored for 3 games and i wouldnt be suprised if we dont for the 2 playoff games. we might draw both 0-0 mind....and then pens, oh joy!

The chances of winning the lottery are 14 million to 1, the chances of Sheffield United winning the play-offs are probably slightly longer than that. But, you've got to be in it to win it.

I hate the saying that the play-offs are a lottery. I know what is meant by it, but it isn't a lottery at all. It's football where a team has the chance to play well and win promotion. It's all in the team's hands.
Having said that, I do realise I have more chance of my ticket winning than us going up through the play-offs.

Indeed. Similarly, penalties aren't really a lottery - it's quite clear what's expected of the first 5. The manager can also decide who to pick for those places. Wilson decided that the best players for these duties included a player that had had an absolutely wretched game and was lucky to still be on the pitch (Williamson), a left back that had been on the pitch a handful of minutes (Taylor), another full-back that while good in front of goal wasn't known for his penalty prowess (Lowton). Collins did his job, Porter too, in the first 5 penalties - Quinn, who had played well and had taken penalties in the past, scored the 6th kick. He really should have taken one of the first 5...

I was really pleased when I realised we were playing Yeovil. Now just looked at the form guide and they are second!

I hate this. It should be the top three teams. They were the best three teams, they should take the rewards. So when you say "it's all in the team's hands" what you mean is "for the team in 3rd, it's all taken out of their hands, and then dangled like a treat for them to demean themselves over with a mini-tournement to eke every last penny out of the fans, who will flock to the most overpriced and overrated stadium in the land to cheer on their team as they try to win back what is rightfully theirs".

Not really Tarquin, I understand your point but that's really the bigger picture of whether play-offs are right or wrong. Purely looking at the play-offs, once they start, it's in the players' (+ managers, etc.) hands. I'm objecting to the idea that it's all luck. I'm not saying whether it's fair or not.

Quite, we haven`t won any of the play-offs that we have finished 3rd in the regular season*

So maybe we win the one where we finished 5th?

* yes I know we haven`t won the ones where we finished 5th or 6th either...

We've never lost a semi when we finished 3rd or 5th :)

Edit: ooh-err missus etc etc

Perhaps 4 is our magic number and we will only be able to be triumphant in the play offs when we have finished 4th.
