He was the highest paid player at the club and wanted even more by the sounds of it. He never had a relegation clause by all accounts either so we were paying him a PL wage in the Championship.
More accurately, a Premier League wage in name only, given the number of players we had contracted on average PL money was likely zero

You know what they say ........ You don't know what you've got till it's gone you can't blame the guy no one with any ambition is going to hang around at this sorry arsed club as we are now. At least Burnley are making a go of it while we plod along fixing holes in the roof after every shower. The annoying thing for me is they have let Hecky and the staff go through the planning and pre season and then let our best two players go cheaply days before the season kicks off what a waste of time and effort for the staff and a real downer for the squad remaining here. Contracts should have been put in front of the players the day after we were promoted if they didn't want to sign they should have been sold then. Same goes for the rest of the squad how many more will be sold on the cheap?
I did think the Prince would be different but his actions prove to everybody that all we got was the lesser of two evils when he won the court battle, time for him to bugger off and find a new owner who can move the club forward.
Judge me by my actions he said, well that one is coming home to roost. I can't wait for him to sell up ✌️

Sad he’s gone but all the £35m to a top European club has been shown up for the load of bollocks it always was.

First bid and he’s gone though. Sheffield’s hotels will be down on revenue in December/January going forwards.
....only bid, though, surely?

That says it all.

Taking it like a Champ!

Anyone know how much we paid for him?

I know 22m was a reported fee but I’m struggling to believe that was not including some incentives and given we went down during his first full season and only went back up on his 4th. It wasn’t as if he didn’t miss a large number of games either.

So is it a 7m loss potentially mitigated further by a couple of million potentially in the future? Or is it far less, as the 22m was not reached?

Flip side of course is that we probably have Boreham Wood or Rising Ballers some bibs and balls and got 20m plus sell ons for Ndiaye.
We paid €25m which at the time worked out at £22m. As transfer fees are amortised over the length of the contract Berge's registration had an accounting book value of just under £5m (£22m*12/54). On that, an incoming of £15m plus bonuses means a P&L profit of £10m. Additionally, I'd be amazed if we'd not paid Genk the full fee so there's a £15m+ cashflow benefit.

As for Berge himself... thought he had ambition. I've been disappointed with United for selling players in the past but this is the first occasion I can think of where I'm disappointed with the player for his choice.

He's Norwegian
Turns out money was the reason
He's fucked over his mates next season
He's Sander Berge

He's Norwegian
Said Kompany was the reason
But he'll be back in the Champ next season
He's Sander Berge

Signs off on IG with “once a blade always a blade”… aye, unless you’re in the final year of your contract and refuse to sign a couple of extension offers.

At least he’ll get away with not being able to jump 3 inches off the ground playing under Kompany.

Are the player trying to tell us something.O they don’t think nothing about the club it different when they want the cheers off the crowd and kiss the badge

This is intended as a compliment.

It's depressing when the club's PR machine has got intelligent, well-reasoned fans saying stuff like that. I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but it's made me feel a bit sad.

I am not buying that Sander wanted to leave Sanders comments to Burnley speak volumes that we have zero ambition what so ever and that is down to piss poor ownership of our club.

We are losing our best players because we have people in charge that are absolutely clueless in how to run the club.

We don't want players who don't want to play for us so he can do one. Let's get behind the ones that do.
I don't believe that Sander wanted to leave at all It will be the powers that be at the top messing our players around as per usual.

My theory is he wanted to run his contract down and go to a European club on a free. We've acted the cunt with him, told him sign an extension or get frozen out, he's thought fuck that. WE have touted him about and he's signed with the first/only takers so his career doesn't stagnate.

I completely agree but I have to try and square away Berge's refusal to negotiate a new deal in an attempt to run down his contract to join AC Milan/Liverpool (leaving aside the fact that we're notoriously low payers) and his signing for Burnley. Fucking Burnley

I'm an admirer of Sander and was happy to see him stay, without drama, in our push for promotion.

My question is , was it such a bad idea to sell him. Last season no major players came in for him. Now, even though everyone knows of our wonderful financial position, still no major players come in for him. Surely if they thought they would be getting a bargain they would have been queuing up for his services. What made him go to a club that might well be in the championship again next year when he could have had freedom to approach any team in a few months?

Burnley won’t be in the championship next year

I think it’s just the timing which wasn’t great. I honestly believe that with a couple midfielders like hamer and smallbone as well as a couple more creative players on loan +akpom (hopefully) that we’ll do a lot better than expected. The aim will be to keep it 0-0 as long as possible and hope to nick something. I think we’ll be hard to beat, just depends if we can score

He was never ever going to AC Milan or Liverpool. If he had stayed he would have ended up at Rangers or Celtic.

I don't like the way it's been done and it's clear others don't either.

More importantly, our manager doesn't.

However, if it's something like 15 million then it is a good price. What needs to happen now is that money is reinvested in the team on the right players.

We'll have to see if the latter happens and it turns out a good bit of business all round.

Just hope the way this has been dealt with doesn't reverberate.

What’s Bettis said ?
Stephen Bettis said:
"We did not want to lose Sander, particularly this close to the start of the Premier League season, but after the player expressed a strong interest to leave, we spoke to Burnley to get the best possible deal for Sheffield United. Since his arrival at the club, Sander has been a popular member of the squad and it was hoped he would once again shine at Bramall Lane in the Premier League.

"Unfortunately, along with his representatives, he has opted to move to Burnley and we would like to place on record our thanks for his service over the past three and a half years."
