Good luck to Simmo I hope he finds a club soon.

Some very harsh and nasty posts on this thread tbh ................. we know he had a bad spell where he was rightly dropped but he came back better for it, a decent enough keeper at this level but his command of the area was not so good, but no worse than say Judas Kenny. His age and finances will be the basis of this decision.

Are you for real mate?! Simonsen make a dozen major errors in the relegation season and a number of big ones this season (Pigs at home anyone?!). He is culpable for where we are now. He's a seasoned veteran not George Long and when in counted he frequently let us down. His wage was probably comparable with Paddy's at QPR, yet one's judas and the other deserves sympathy. He's been toss.

Presumably he's been released to go and look for the ball he booted into the Mekong Delta area on Saturday afternoon.

The right decision.
We cannot base contracts on just one or two good games.
We have to be brave & get rid of the players that havent done the job.

I was not comparing Simmo to Kenny who was a far better keeper, I was only referring to coming for crosses and command of the area which to be fair was not a great deal worse than Kenny. I can see where I don't make that very clear in the original post.

not my favourite player as he lacks that presence in the area.probably the best thing to move on,as the penalty miss will always be on his mind. and the scapegoat crowd wont let him forget it

Funnily enough I was comming out of Sheffield this Tea Time, and there was a Ball in the Gutter, RHS of the Fast Lane, I smiled and thought .... it couldn't be, could it ?

Kenny communicated better with his defence and always had the guts to come and claim a corner. Even had the vision to cover the defence and kick the ball out of play when called upon. Skills that an experienced keeper like Simonson should know himself.

I know you say your not trying to compare but you it seemed like you were.

It's obviously the right decision, but I actually feel for the bloke leaving the club in such a manner. And I never thought I'd say that.

I imagine he would have at least had an indication, or feeling what would be happening anyway. I also have great sympathy for where he finds himself today. We've all had a few bad days, few of us though have found ourselves out of work also.

I wish hm well for he future. I think it's the right decision for the club though.

Think based on the fact we have Howard and Long it is a good move to reduce wage bill. Best of luck to him in his next move.

you just know he is gonna turn out against us with another club some time in the future, (probably in the play offs), and save everthing we through at him. or maybe the final, were he scores the winning pen. You know it, its the blades curse, for fucks sake. by the way still glad he's gone though.UTB

is there anyone on this board who doesnt realise warnock came in for kenny, knowing we'd take the money his moneybags board had to offer?? why the fuck is kenny a judas?? its beyond ridiculous, can we please put this to bed once and for all.

For getting paid whilst serving a drugs ban and then scarpering at the first opportunity. That's why.

Because we fucking sold him without a second thought! Jesus!

One of the biggest reasons why we're in div1 is/was the failure to replace Paddy. That adds to the bitterness.

If Howard turns out to be a winner then it can all be left behind.

Sad for the bloke because he seemed a decent chap but there's no room for sentiment in football. He cost us a lot of points without ever really making amends by keeping us in many games as he wasn't all that good. Maybe room for optimism here, maybe we are going to get rid of the deadwood and start afresh at last.

It's a side of football often forgotten when people just see the big wages. Wembley one day, out of a job the next. Good luck, Simmo.

He'd have probably been released whatever the outcome of the penalties on Saturday. As others have said, the cull of the big earners has to start. As it is, we're already two weeks behind in our planning for next season, so time will shortly be getting tight.

Not just us, though. I should think Wednesday's transfer activity has been disrupted by most of their natural targets playing in the Euros...

I often slated Simmo but credit to him, playing as well as he did on Saturday knowing a new contract wasn't coming is true professionalism. Hope he finds a new club just not in the same league at us because we all know he will pull off a world class save!

I think a keeper is the hardest thing for United to replace given our recent track record.

In my lifetime, we've had number 1s of Alan Kelly, Simon Tracey, Paddy Kenny. I'm not saying Kenny was as good as Kelly by any stretch, but he was a good keeper. I think people forget just how lucky we've been with keepers, and now it's hard to accept when we have an average keeper.

Simonsen wasn't great, but in my opinion he'll easily find another club at this level and probably do well with less pressure.

amazing that all of our worst players are on the highest contracts ..
ah well .. one down .. three to go.

tommy lee eh?.. that would be a result.

Why do we need another expense on a keeper when we have Howard, and Long?

Its a waste of a wage IMHO

More to the point, Flatulent_Bob, why is there all this raving about Tommy Lee, who's just been relegated to the fourth tier? If I recall it correctly, he got beaten twice at his near post at the Lane too. The only dafter goalkeeper suggestion I've seen on here is David Lucas.

I heard a lot of chatter about him last season, and I think he might have been out of contract.
At that time it might have made sense, because we didn't have any real cover.
I believe Howard is very highly thought off at United, as is Long with potentially the best of the lot (Willis) coming through too.
