League One Wes

His distribution yesterday was sensational and that is a word almost never used to describe a Goalkeepers passing. Twice yesterday he hit targeted, backspin volleys that split right through Barnsley and created one chance on goal and the other one to MGW was just 2ft away from creating a 1v1 situation.

I think he's up there with MGW & Billy for POTY.

Definitely player of the year material.

The players in contention are Foderingham, Gibbs-White & Sharp.

Jack Robinson has been excellent of late, but his poor start let's him down. I don't think any of the others have been consistently good enough to be name checked, though Bogle might have been in the conversation had his season not been cut so short.

I'd probably say (1) MGW, (2) Wes, (3) Billy.
As it stands.

That first-half save was another which was worth the cost of the season ticket behind the goal on the Kop. It was one of those moments where for a fraction of a second you know the opposition have scored, but then he got down and stuck out a hand at incredidible speed, and right on the line had the strength to keep the ball out. The relief was palpable. Amazing, thrilling.
They had taken an age with that corner, with long-distance communications between 3 of their players on what they were going to do. It was pretty clear what the plan was, but nobody on our side seemed to be interested in adjusting our defensive plan. We need more leaders on the pitch.

Agreed - from the BLUT the Barnsley fans made that "goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal" noise so they thought it was in.

Delighted he's proved me wrong.

I didn't see him as being a regular reliable number 1 at this level but he's achieved that and then some.

Been outstanding and the best compliment I can pay him, is that I'm struggling to think of another keeper off the top of my head at this level whom I'd swap him for.

Despite other POTS candidates, I'd probably vote for Wes at present based on how he's risen to the occasion.

He's a great shot stopper and very comfortable in the air.

In terms of effectiveness and points won for us, I think he's second only to Henderson in keepers we've had in recent years.

He’s also extremely good at holding on to low hard shots , getting his body fully behind them and clutching the ball to his chest .

He’s had quite a few of those to deal with this season and made them look relatively easy , which they are most certainly not. Many goalkeepers parry these shots away , often into a dangerous area sometimes leading to a goal or even worse , let them slide under their body .

His performances are just getting better and better and along with MGW and Sharp he is definitely in the conversation for player of the season.

What I loved about yesterday (after making that stunning save) was the bollocking he immediately dished out to Egan. No interest in getting slaps on the back, he was straight onto his defensive captain, telling him to sort it out.

Despite the number of injuries in defence, this is the most confidenceI have felt in the back line for a while, and that is predominantly down to Wes.

Think we have failed to score in 13 games - if we do accumulate enough points for playoffs I think it will be down to keeping em out at the other end to which Wes has been the lynchpin

POY so far for me with Billy MGW and JLT in the frame

That save on Saturday was so so good. I sit at an angle where I couldn't appreciate it properly without seeing a replay. Incredible. He's not that old, but I was thinking on Saturday if he was 6/7 years younger (similar age to Henderson/ Ramsdale) he would be touted so highly & we'd be lucky to keep him. He's technically good too.

There's still time for Mcburnie!!!!!!!

Not sure League une is in anyway superior to League one but it’s the thought that counts1B57E25C-CC63-4A13-A3CD-569848A8420E.jpeg

His distribution is excellent too. Looks to set MGW away on counter attacks and is rarely far off.

He's done brilliantly, he is very confident, commands his area, is a great shot stopper and has excellent distribution. His decision making can still be a bit iffy at times and he has a silly mistake in him, but I even like that about him because he is prepared to sweep up and take risks that will save us more times than not.

I love a 'keeper to be a little crazy, ala Barthez, Higuita and Grobellaar.

Put into context Hendo and Rammers had the famous 5 bailing them out most of time, Wes only has Egan for defensive consistency, so it's remarkable how few wrong siders he's had.

Agreed, though I would say since Hecky came in JLT and RND have been brilliant and so were Bogle/Baldock before injury. Egan has actually been a bit inconsistent and Wes has dug us out loads.

I'd say he's won us more points than Hendo did.

Wes just seems like he’s reached an age where he’s secure in his game.

No doubt he’s less talented than Ramsdale, but his head game seems to be at its peak.
The old adage that keepers don’t peak until they turn 30 is still true for my money despite the ever increasing expectations for kids at 22/23 to be the finished article.

Simon Moore is another example, doing well as Coventry’s number one despite the consensus during his time with us that he’d never be more than back up at this level.

I dont think anyone saw him doing this well. He is one of the few who have stepped up to the mark and been pretty consistant throughout. I think he might win us the play offs if we stay there.

Egan is the junior member of the FF and agreed his levels have dropped, but perhaps thats due to the telepathic knowledge of Joc, Bash, Enda or George's positioning, is now lost. Added to the coaching and multiple team changes its unsurprising that his levels are confused. Regardless of their quality, replacing 4 years of defensive team work is always going to be a big ask. Wes comes across as a extremely intelligent, patient keeper who is knitting together a new defense in extraordinary circumstances.
