Realistically this guy has experience and contacts, and in this position how much damage can he really do?

If he starts to have a negative impact it will surely be easy to give him the hoof? (see what I did there ;) )

He could do wonders for the enigma that is Rhian Brewster, imo it’s a great coup hopefully he’s got some good friends that scout players.

No but it would be silly to think that the youth isn’t closely linked
That doesn’t make any sense. Boothroyd has been a shambles at England. Brewster has played under him. In what way do you think that all of a sudden Boothroyd is all of a sudden going to ‘wonders’ for him?

I don’t know anything about Boothroyd and consequently have no opinion of him, however, Wikipedia suggests he had a win percentage of 65 as England U21 coach, which seems pretty succesful.

Oldun what's your issue with Boothroyd? Sorry if that comes across a bit forward, but it's a serious question.

You've already stated him being a shambles at England, in what sense? Is there anything else that makes you think he's a poor appointment specifically?

I’m sure they can and hope they do but if he’s brought in as a consultant and the current coaches ignore him then what’s the point in bringing him in as a consultant
To consult doesn’t mean that he has the power to change anything.
Hopefully the current staff will learn from him.

When he first made his mark at Watford he was the greatest thing since real ale and every brain dead pundit would suggest he was a “breath of fresh air”. Unfortunately, since then he’s stunk the place out at most places he’s been. Of course I wish him well now he’s with us but I’ll need convincing this is a good move.

Aidy Boothroyd on coaching
Kevin Blackwell on tactics
Steve Evans on fitness & conditioning

Play A-Team Chorus

PS. Whatever happened to that prat Graham Westley?

dont know him personally but coaching wise. we are going to get neckache. as he teach them to hoof it up the pitch. in the last 2 major tournaments theyve played 6 games in 2019 & 2021 won 1 drew 1 lost 4

in 2019 he failed spectacularly despite having Henderson, Tomori, Wan-Bissaka, Maddison, Foden, Barnes, Mount, Gibbs-White, Gray & Abraham at his disposal

then this

Always interesting that you list all these pros and when they failed it was his fault, when they succeeded it was their doing. Maybe the players should take some blame for not beating Andorra? Unless Boothroyd ran on and stuck a few in our net! Players shouldn't need motivating to beat such a lowly ranked team.

I hope this is a indication that investment in the new academy site is coming I would think he's coming in as a coach trainer. Sure I read somewhere that for cat 1 you have to show that you can bring young coaches through as well as developing players (I am sure someone will correct me )
Sounds a bit like when John Warnock came in to help build the initial Academy. I don't think anyone was interested in what style of play he might favour!

dont know when did i say they succeeded. but If Aidy Boothroyd is in football business non coaching role, then it could be a great addition. just leave the coaching alone to Derek Geary & his staff. they are doing a cracking job

england its poor management, in the same if Guardiola was mid table would be poor management & his way was dinosaur football we trying to get away from the route 1 football now. even national league north teams are decent in possession as at the highest level you will get found out otherwise, you cant have a squad good enough to win the tournament, with some of the best youngsters to come through england set up in 20yrs & majority would make a the 1st senior final for 55 years. & to fail to even win a game at the tournament that is severe underachievement. if you were right, Jokanovic would still be the Sheffield United manager now & it would be the players fault.

Andorra that was just shocking, its harder to draw than to win, Sheffield FC Could beat them as proved by the 10-0. it poor tactics & organisation

Makes sense to have an experienced consultant for an inexperienced acadamy manager, whether that should be Boothroyd is a different argument

I think this all depends on his remit. If he is there to improve processes and procedures at the academy then there may not be many more people who are better qualified, at least for the price we can afford anyway.

If he is to start providing input on tactics then I hope we have Jan Koller mk2 coming through.

I can't help but feel uneasy about this appointment, he has looked like a football dinosaur for the last few years & I would rather he wasn't here.

He’s just mentioned that he’s glad to be at a club going forward. I don’t call record defeats in a relegation season and bottom half of the Championship at the moment ‘going forward’ in my book.

Academy moving forward more than the club at the moment?

What experience does Boothroyd have of managing an academy?

What experience does Boothroyd have of managing an academy?

Taken from the font of knowledge that is Wikipedia, of course:

After ending his playing career at Peterborough United, Boothroyd was appointed coach of the Under 17, Under 19 and reserve teams at the club. His tactical nous and drive impressed, and he left Peterborough in 2001 to join Norwich City as their youth team coach under Nigel Worthington. After two years at Carrow Road, Boothroyd assumed the positions of Youth Development Officer and Technical Director at West Bromwich Albion, joining in October 2003.

From 2005-13 he worked as a club manager

On 28 February 2014, Boothroyd was appointed manager of the England national under-20 football team,[25] but was replaced the following year in a reshuffle that saw him coach the under-19 side instead.[26] He was re-appointed under-20s manager in August 2016, with Keith Downing taking charge of the under-19s.[27]

Boothroyd was named caretaker manager of the England national under-21 football team, after Gareth Southgate was named interim manager of the senior team.[3] He would manage the side for their remaining 2017 UEFA Euro Championship qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Bosnia and Herzegovina.[3] His first match in charge of the under-21s ended in a 1–0 win over Kazakhstan,[28] and the second, a 5–0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.[29]

On 9 June 2018, Boothroyd managed England to success at the 2018 Toulon Tournament, beating Mexico 2–1 in the final.[30]

On 16 April 2021, Boothroyd announced he would leave his role with The FA to focus on a return to club footbal3l.[31]
