beattie

In our departed hero's case, crossing the ball is a rarity because he has the same phantom pace as Kozluk and no ingenuity or guile with which to beat his full-back. Any cross that he occasionally manages to deliver is more likely to end in the stands than the goalmouth. That's why he will spend the rest of his career hopping from club to club, lower league to lower league, sitting on a piece of wood watching others play football.

How I wish we still had Cotts.

I hear that Marcus Bent is available too. Similar goalscoring record at Bramall Lane (first time around). Why not get them both in. What a partnership that could be!?

Nice strawman, Olle. Thanks for bringing Benty up. Jesus, what a signing that was.

If I were running things, we wouldn't be signing Beattie, as we wouldn't need to having not sold Slew. So there.

IMHO Blackwell's use of Cotterill was negligent in the extreme, and downright vindictive at times (Jordan Stewart on the right wing, anyone?) but I don't care to debate it with a cartoon.

The argument had already been won Rev. Or to put it better it came down to us having different subjective opinions (though the facts back up my opinion). You've failed to respond to the fact that we were more successful without Beattie in the team, other than that Cotterill had an impact. I agree he had an impact, but think that without BT we changed our style and played better as a team. I got the old who else scored 20 goals a season for United since Deane and named Bent, Blake and Fjortoft (plus there are a couple a couple of others if you take off BT's penalties).

I brought up Marcus Bent because signing James Beattie at this stage would be an equivalent waste of money as Bent was when we signed him last season.

Why let the facts get in the way? Fjortoft = 19 in 34 league games. Bent = 20 in 59. Blake = 34 in 55. None of them scored 20 league goals in a season. Neither Fjortoft or Bent completed a full league season for United.

After Brian Deane scored 20+ in 1989/90, the next United striker to do so was James Beattie in 07/08. Why penalties should have anything to do with it is beyond me. Do SUFC only get 2 points if the win is secured by a spot kick?

Agreed, time to move on. If we can justify using "some money" to re-sign Beattie, then it would be better spent elsewhere in our development.

Do you think Beattie could score a hatful at this level?

Hey Olle, if United had done better with Monty in the team than without him in 2008/9, does that invalidate your arguments that he was no good?

According to wikipedia Bent has scored 93 goals from 489 appearances and BT has 124 goals from 400 appearances.
I for one would rather have BT in my side than Bent or Ched.

If he does sign then lets at least give him a chance. As for the freekicks/penalties how many does Rooney get? who cares how they go in as long as they keep going in.

Are you trying to say we were better off with Craig Beattie than James Beattie ?
Im certain signing JB would be a significantly better signing than Marcus Bent and certainly not a waste of money, a fully fit JB would fire us to promotion with ease

How is Cotts being used these days? Testing weight-bearing tolerances of different grades of wood?

Strong rumour that he's agreed to sign, 6.5k pw. Deal to be done/announced next Monday

If that IS true. I think, on a free that is a good deal, he can score goals from anywhere including his head, Porter poaching and BT from further out, yes Cressy has been scoring but that won't last all season and you can't rely on him staying fit, he usually seems to cut his head open at least twice a season!

I'd be gladly proved wrong but this is another Marcus Bent in the making. We need more pace and movement up front. I'd only be happy if we got BT and another striker in. Him alone won't cut it due to his age and goalscoring record...9 since leaving the lane!

He is on Soccer AM on saturday so clearly not fit either else he'd be, signed up or at the very least training with a club!

And your source is.......?

Torrix, You'll note that this is only my 91st post, but that the first 89 didn't feature as wind-ups.

My source couldn't possibly be revealed

This is still a post in the rumour section. I said it was a strong rumour. It may not be true. I have reason to think it is and that's why I've posted.

If it turns out not be true then I'm sorry, however, I'm not trying to wind anyone up

** Ollessndro groans **

I can only hope that you are ill informed Woody (with all due respect). All this talk about a fit James Beattie will rip League One defences apart and he'll get a hat full of goals. This move would benefit James Beattie (and maybe the Cricketers - and possibly the burger van outside the Cricketers). Beattie is an overweight, overrated crock. 7 games without a goal for Rangers and then loaned to Blackpool (scoring a big fat zero in 9) because he was not sharp enough to outfox the pub team defences of Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and/or Aberdeen!?

I am saying that we were better off without BT in the team. Don't forget we had 3 other strikers (albeit not very good one's). James Beattie as a goalscorer (even as a player) is ... was in a different league to Craig Beattie, but James had a negative influence on the team. It was all the James Beattie show and everything revolved around him. It is no surprise that when he left we started playing like a team and did better (fact).

rubbish to say we started playing as a team - we started playing to blackwells idea of what a team is. anyone who says beattie wasnt a team player would do well to remember the 70yards run and tackle he made against middlesborough in the cup, 119minutes into the game with us 0-1 down.

You do talk bollocks, last season was a write off for Beattie he was injured and was never fully fit, had problems getting into the Rangers team when they signed Jelavic and didnt have a happy time at Blackpool, to call him a crock is shameful
I for one hope he does come back to BDTBL if only to prove you wrong

If we can afford Beattie then could we not spend the money on perhaps more than one other player instead? And I can't see Beattie settling for 6.5k a week. Lamborghinis are expensive things to run, and as he fucked off to Stoke for the big money not that long ago why has he had a sudden change of heart? I'd like to see him back, but only if he's the only option, and i don't think that he is. We'll have to wait and see.

Beattie's on Soccer AM on saturday
Tubes is asking for questions for him on Twitter

I've got a question. Does he regret loading those flash alloys into the back of his 4x4 off Ecclesall road whilst there was a recession on?

I saw him loading his Range Rover with them on Eccy Road one lunchtime, and made the terrible error of posting it on BU. What followed was a truly epic thread of guff blowery.

It truly was. One of the funniest threads I've ever read on any forum, anywhere, anytime:)
