Former Blades midfield enforcer Mark Patterson has a new book out, he talks about that plus shares some stories from his time at the Lane including Howard Kendall's unique approach to management, Nigel Spackman's bedroom assault as well as Simon Tracey and the 9-iron!

Funnily enough, a few years back, he did quote me for a garden job. He was so much cheaper than the other quotes, I felt sure he couldn’t be up to much. Looking on his website, his work looks pretty decent, I may have u
misjudged him.

That was the occasion when Trig Jnr (TY) speculated on how long I’d last before telling him I was a Blade, he reckoned less than a minute. It was an effort, but I never let on. I do have another job needs doing now, I should get him to quote.

I have a vague memory of him doing a Ronnie Rosenthal-style miss in front of an open net, but can't find any mention of it anywhere online.

Can anyone else remember this or did I completely dream it up?

Mark Patterson was a very effective defensive midfielder for the Blades. He benefitted enormously from having Gordon Cowans (on loan from Villa). Marks role was to win the ball & pass it to Cowans, who like Paul McGrath (from Man Utd) could read a game like few before , or after IMO. They were head & shoulders above any other players & Cowans in particular could bring other less gifted players.

Wikipedia says he scored 4 goals for us, I swear he got three of those in his first two games!

Debut at Stoke City. David White and Patterson scored I think at the opposite end to the Blades supporters.
I thought he was a decent player, just what we needed at the time.

First time I saw him was League Cup game v Arsenal. He and Gordon Cowans were amazing closing down Arsenal including Dennis Bergkamp. We won 1-0, Carl Vesrt scoring with a near post header from Mitch Ward cross if my memory serves me right.

FA Cup and cross was from Whitehouse

Whitehouse got the equaliser in the first game, didn't he?

I was too young for to go to the replay. I remember waking up when my Dad got home and he told me the score. The next morning I assumed I'd dreamt it!

I also recall watching the highlights and watching Hodges break out into a walk with the ball at his feet, presumably to waste some time.

What cracking good bloke. The book title says it all. I missed most his playing time at the lane as I was working overseas. Again!
Great choice for an interview. Thanks.

Cheers Nick & Hal for that, enjoyable listen! Can remember his home debut - smallest guy on the pitch was him and he scored with a header, biggest guy on the pitch was the giant Kevin Francis and he scored with his feet.

Add me as another vote to get Dougie Hodgson on at some stage. Was a really entertaining expert summariser on Radio Sheffield when he was out injured.

Cheers guys, enjoyed that. Thought he was going to say a bit more about Warnock later on, guess you ran out of time?

There's another hour of edited stuff but we have learned the hard way that people don't watch videos over an hour long.

Fair enough. I do sometimes. Sounded like he wasn't a fan of Neil.

Think it was FA CUP
It was. I was at uni and had an acquaintance who was a particularly arrogant Arsenal fan. He was very vocal about how much of a pasting we were going to take at Highbury, not friendly banter either. I saw him after we drew 1-1 and didn’t even have chance to open my mouth before he went off on one how much of a beating we would take in the replay before storming off. Then we won and I didn’t see him for ages. I like to think he hid and cried a little bit every time he saw me.

Often talked about as being one of our great cup nights but sadly I missed it
