I've read the book and enjoyed it. Is it a literary great - no (Cowens even says as much at the begining). But, it is an enjoyable read and I think Steve's passion for United really shines through and can't be questioned, despite what you think about his past activities.

Usual bravado bollocks about hooligans. Greatly exaggerated tales of how many they took down from other firms.

Loved watching football in the 80s but just don't get the desire or need to fight people.

Would love to meet all the people on that list but no interest in the book.
totally wrong but thanks for the negatively

Same 😂😂 I’m sure in the first book there was a tale of him and 3 mates charging 30 Wednesday hooligans and battering them so that they ran off. Lapped it up as a yute. Now, 15 years on, I just laugh at it. Unless you all have machete’s. guns or are Liam Neeson. That’s just not going to happen against like minded idiots.

Edit: I’m sure he’s a sound bloke and GLTTL !
not true

Has he ever said 'what I did with all that fighting was a bit bad actually' and made any effort to distance himself from that kind of shite?

If not then I'm baffled at why any self respecting pro or ex pro is willing to be seen dead there.

Two Leeds fans sat in a bar:

'Jimmy Savile was a right bad un'
'He wore a Leeds shirt on telly quite often though. His support of Leeds cancels out the horrible shit he did, so we can just ignore it.'
'Oh ok then, he's alright really:

Of course im not equating this fighting bloke with Jimmy Savile - it's more the principle I'm wondering about. Are we turning a blind eye to hooliganism or whatever other horrible shit because someones a blade? Load of bollocks if you ask me.

That said, if he has talked about it and acknowledged that it's a cunts game then fair enough.
jesus wept

I quite like the idea of a book about following the Blades over the years and the ups and downs (it will be very lop sided on that score). In this era of vlogs and blogs and social media (and by the way I love the output of YorkBlade on SUW) it is refreshing and a bit old skool to see something in print.

The author is also nearly as old as me, which helps with the relevance of it all.

Cowan's first book.

Bert read the first chapter and then the chapter when Cowan's gang got battered in Lincoln.

He then threw the book in the bin.

The modern day Dickens he is not.
cowens if you don't mind

Yea maguire not going ....It would be a daft move if he did really....
England hero glorifies football hooliganism...
A few of my mates are going ....unfortunately I'm having my sack back and crack waxed 😀
ffs

If he's a hooligan then why are all these big names going to see him? I thought we were meant to dislike that kind of thing.

Not that I'm bothered. I'm just a bit surprised, I suppose.

Is it not a non hooligan book but just a book about the blades?

Have no interest in hooligans or their story's but don't think he has been a hooligan since early 90s going on what people say, I'd say we all know a hooligan or two who may have been involved at some point or other, idiots if you ask me, but pretty sure the so called "proper lads" whatever that may be don't really have anything to do with these nights or books. Happened to be at Fannys before the Birmingham game, didn't see Cowens myself but he was supposed to be there doing a signing and I heard people taking the piss out of him for a team style photo from the night, him in the middle with hands on knees either side of him, like a captain on a team photo, cringe

Each to their own though

I wonder if The Star are running anything on it. 'United legend brings out book' will probably be the long and short of it. They'll be too scared of falling out with people to have some critical analysis of so many people associated with united going to an event by a bloke who's writing books about hooliganism

Don't get wound up that often but I'm finding this fucking sickening
rent free

ffs, heard wrong then

Just realised your Cowens after reading the thread through, heard wrong? about people taking the piss about the photo? maybe I worded it wrongly, they were not taking the piss out of you in person if that's what your saying is wrong, I didn't see you there although I heard you was but the group of blokes next to us were taking the piss out of the team style photo with hands on the knees.

I was offered a ticket for this by a mate.

I said that I had no interest in going to an event run by right wing ex hooligans and the like.

I also said that I have had the misfortune of bumping into Wilder, Wit and their leary loudmouth mates in the Copthorne on several occasions and I had absolutely no interest in paying for the privilege once again
What makes you think Cowens is right wing ? You will be saying hes racist next and you would be miles out , maybe you should think before you post shit like that.
thanks sitwell, don't waste your time on saddo's

Quick review for you all as I had to leave a bit early.

Met Steve and his wife, both lovely.
Huge turnout.
Gary Sinclair was on form.
Comedian was very good (also Nobby Stiles's lad).
The bar was a joke.
The raffle and prizes were fantastic.
I saw some all time heroes.
And I honesly teared up when Wilder came onto the stage to "he's one of our own" (and no, he didn't slag off the Prince or make excuses).

I get that this is a forum and I kinda understand why people would would avoid nights like this but it was a good one, and me and my old man had a fantastic time reminiscing and drinking over priced, warm beer.
thanks, glad you enjoyed it apart from the bar bit

Was/is Dave your dad then ? Used to do a bit of glass collecting at The Sportsman when Graham had it or am I (not for the first or last time) barking up the wrong tree here.

I've met Steve a few times, he was always welcoming and pretty sound. He had a bar in Eckington for a little while which was a little bit naughty and full of characters but sound enough.

He did tell me he can't go into town due to his past and basically that Wednesday are still looking for him. If true he was pretty easy for them to find yesterday at ponds forge 😂😂
appreciate your sound quote but i've never had a bar in eckington and i certainly don't avoid town coz of wendy
