Hope I’m wrong but I’ve just had a call to say that Steve Thompson has passed away. Rest in peace Steve if this is the case…⚔️

Edit…I’ve just checked and he apparently passed away a couple of days ago. ☹️

RIP Thommo

My main memory of Steve Thompson was the 5th round FA cup match away at Norwich.
We were flying high in div 3 (league 1) where as Norwich City were hot favourites flying high in div 1 (Premier league).
Just checked and they finished 4th in the league that season averaging 16,785.

1988-89 season under Bassett had a similiar feeling to a few months after Wilder joined us….the fans and club were United and you could feel something special was happening. We took an impressive 5K to Norwich giving them one of their highest crowds of the season, 24,139.
I went down on the same coach as Shred, setting off from the Greyhound pub at Attercliffe.
Remember the coach showing the film “Debbie Does Dallas” on the tv screen and every time the coach went over a bump the screen went fuzzy with some Blades booing/ complaining about the VHS machine having a faulty loose connection.

Regards the main event I remember it being a great match.
Thommo conceded an unlucky own goal…we thought that’s it…game over…..but Deane equalised
Then Norwich scored again….we thought that’s it…game over…..but then Agana equalised.
Was the cup upset on? No….because Norwich scored a third and won 3-2.
However our fans were upbeat after the match because we had been so competitive (pretty even match) away at one of the best teams in England.

In that match Thompson was partnering Stancliffe in the centre of defence and both played well. Remember Thompson being strong and beefy. A no nonsense, boot it out into row Z type of defender with a permed style / curly blonde hair but both him and Stancliffe had physicality but were very much on the slow side.

Think he only played a few matches for 1 season and then 10 years later he was part of the coaching team and managed us for a few games.

70 is no age…..rest in peace big man.

RIP Tommo. Came in as caretaker manager amongst the utter carnage of the Green and Mcdonald era. Although he was completely out of his depth he tried his best and managed us in a cup semi final. Can't believe he was 70, no age but caught a long battle against cancer.
