The last I heard of Barry Hartle he was in a care home in Stockport. He was suffering from severe dementia. A friend of mine met Barry's son there early last year. It didn't sound too great so I was wondering if there was anyone who knew any more up to date. Barry played on the left wing for United & was the successor to Ron Simpson. Anyone under 65 stop here! He was a skilful dribbler with a decent turn of speed & could centre accurately - a bit in the Len Allchurch way. Len Badger's passing away brought these old memories back to mind. By the way all the talk of heading a football causing dementia I don't recall Barry ever heading the ball in anger! He was a winger you see -- things were simpler in those days.

He scored one of my favourite goals at the Lane. Ironically enough in the game that Len and Bernard Shaw made their debuts (Leyton Orient 1963).
To my 10 year old eyes Barry took the ball from the corner flag (kop/terrace corner) and dribbled along the by line beating what seemed to me about 7 men before slipping it under Mike Pinner in the Orient goal. I've never forgotten that goal amongst the hundreds I must have forgotten as the years roll by...

And RIP Len...

Went in a pub in London circa 98/99. The King's Head on Westmoreland Street, just around the corner from Harley Street.

A Blades flag was hanging behind the bar, I chatted to the landlord who turned out to be an ex SUFC player.

I'm pretty certain, like 90% certain, it was Barry Hartle. He mentioned that Sean Bean used to drop in for a pint.

If your mate meets Barry's son again could you ask him for confirmation on this?!

He moved to Carlisle Utd in 66 and after spells with three other clubs and after 300 FL appearances he moved into non league. He later became a postman and then a Taxi driver ( info up to 2008)

Yep mick Jones scored with a header and got knocked out ?
I was 11 at time and about my 2nd or third away match, remember a wall or bridge collapsing somewhere near ground and tangerine shirts, but little about game apart from 4-0 scoreline.
Had Mick Jones made his 1st team debut by then?

LSF, memory tells me, a temporary scaffolding bridge had quite significantly sagged in the centre by about 4/5 foot. It was awkward to cross, especially for mi grandad, 73, and his like, large volumes of people crossing made it quite 'airy. Had it been rectified by full time for return home? I think it had.
I had just retuned to England on 29 Dec, match Jan 4, after being away for seven months, some snow around at that time mi thinks.

Cheers XM, thanks for confirming that, was beginning to wonder if I'd imagined it! 😏

My mate hasn't been able to return to the care home but as for Barry senior recalling anything I think that's not possible. Barry junior has asked for anyone with memories of watching his father's play to contact. Not sure what site this was posted on but I'll ask my mate & get back to you.

I have got some information regarding Barry Hartle from my mate in Stockport. Apparently Barry is still in the care home & it's his grandson !! who is appealing for "memories" of Barry's playing career on Where are they now? | footballers | Barry Hartle (where are they now .co.uk). Barry is suffering from dementia & does not communicate much about his playing career.
So come you old gits brush off the cobwebs & log in to give his grandson some background to his grandad's footballing past!
