A very distraught caller on Praise and Grumble was suggesting that a statue of Barry Bannan should be erected outside Hillsborough as he was a club legend.
Obviously money in S6 would stretched to fund such a project so I was wondering if we should lend them our statue of Derek Dooley for their last few weeks of Championship football. They would then be able to display a true legend of both Wednesday and United and also be reminded how they treated this legend by sacking him on Christmas eve.
My only concern about this would be that their administators might try to melt it down for much needed cash.
Such a classy massive club.

Not sure he was distraught but he did suggest a statue of Bannan. Which is pretty crazy when they’ve had some exceptional long term players at their club, like David Hirst. Bannan surely doesn’t even enter the discussion

If they want to build a statue for a player who has spent 10.5 years there who’s only success is a league 1 play off win (yes we’ve never won one but that’s irrelevant) then let them crack on with it. Bannan is wank. If he was that good then he wouldn’t have spent that long there. They compare him to the likes of Fleck. Bannan couldn’t get the ball of him in a phone box.

And Bannan kept Fleck out of the Scotland team for years HOW?!?!?!

Of course you are right, I can go back to the days when they had John Fantham and Ron Springett just to name a couple, but of course our car park could be filled with statues of Hodgy, Joe and Graham Shaw, Doc Pace TC, Woody, Len Badger, Gil Reece and many more.

Wait until he’s pictured kissing the badge of his next club, they aren’t used to seeing players move on. You’d have to be in your early twenties (at least) to remember a time without him.

He is a decent player, when I see them on TV he has normally looked miles ahead of his team mates. And here lies the problem. It’s difficult to ascertain how good he actually is because he is surrounded by utter dross. It’s like being the most competent assistant in Sports Direct, it’s a very low bar.

Cos Scotland had managers like Craig Levein, Alex McLeish, Malkay Mackay & Billy Stark in charge, in the years they played there 🤣
If memory serves me right Bannan got the majority of his Scotland caps in the earlier part of his career, such as at Palace and Villa when Fleck was young at Rangers and Coventry or in the earlier stages with us i.e the league One season. Fleck as good as he was had four really good seasons with us but only one of those was in the Premier and he got injured in that season and never looked the same after which was a massive shame. Those four seasons he was brilliant and a joy to watch and I'd definitely not have swapped him for Bannan.

However Fleck didn't pull any trees up playing for Scotland and also had extremely strong competition there with McTominnay one of them and Bannan wasn't called up neither or if he did didn't play much.

I think with Bannan for Wednesday it's not that he's one of their greatest ever players it's more that he's virtually an ever present for them in 11 years of mediocrity at best when others have either left or tapered off he's stayed loyal and has definitely carried them at times. He is one of their better players still I'd imagine in their history. My Wednesday mate says he's up there in terms of quality for them.

We all like to ridicule him on our side but he's actually someone that I respect as a footballer. I know someone who does charity work with both United and Wednesday and he does a lot with the children's hospital for example.

Whether that merits a statue is for them to debate more than us.

As much as I enjoy taking the piss, I’ve bumped into him in Kelham Island a couple of times and he’s a genuinely nice bloke.

Let’s be honest, he’s a decent player and for anyone who isn’t pork affiliated, spending 11 years there deserves a bit of recognition… and free vaccinations so they can reintegrate back into society without risking infecting anyone else.
