Where we were 12 months ago, the 'Warnock era' was for the SUFC history books, but regrettably, we find ourselves back in the Championship completely devoid of playing styles, fitness and ideas and although we will be in a division higher, squad wise we are back from where we were before Wilder came in; a team in complete and utter disarray with no direction whatsoever and if the appointment of the new manager is not spot on, we can say goodbye to any chance of bouncing back anytime soon.
Now who's to say that Warnock has not applied and is one of the other two or three on the shortlist? As mentioned above, if the 5 consists of Blessin who as we know is not likely, Hecky, possibly Bettis mate Tindall and some other names from the backwaters of football, then I'd rather have Warnock on a one season contract. I could see the logic from both sides; from United's point of view have someone with the clout to get these players playing to a standard befitting their price tag and from Warnock's perspective, what would be a great opportunity and achievement to get the Blades back up and then retire gracefully whilst at the top and with a decent promotion bonus. The Prince then appoints a manager who can then take us forward as an established Premier club.
As I said, Colin should now have been confined to the history books, but unfortunately we are where we are and we need to adjust our mindset accordingly.
Hopefully, we will not have to resort to such measures if Prince gets his selection right first time, should they bring Jokanovic in or manage to sort out a way for Blessin to come over, or even persuade someone like Philippe Clement to take over, but the longer time goes on I'm dreading a Hecky appointment. Keep him at U23's where he's doing a good job and be an important link between U23's and the first team squad.
