Thought i'd ask this on the back of the "can we still challenge for promotion" post. I have to ask the question are we going to be the next big club to drop into the 3rd tier of the english league? Will we follow in the foot steps of Norwich, Southampton, Weeds and Forest clubs who have spent many years in the top 2 leagues but dropped down in recent years. One thing i do know we are not to big to go down.

hmmm i don't think we're going to go down, can't see it to be honest. Even with the shocking finishing and still poor defending i just think its going to be a boring season with a mid table finsih :(

Actually this is exactly the sort of season that a club, perceived by its fans to be, too good to go down gets sucked into the mire and finds it really difficult to struggle out of it. Seen it all before. If the scoring element doesn't pick up pronto then we are royally screwed.

Other teams in and around us - with the exception of Palace (although they have managed a 4 goal haul in one game) have improved whereas we appear to be static. The tactics are negative and we create few chances. Whilst that persists the outcome will be the same as it has for the first 11 games of the season.

It's alright working hard. Just see no evidence of us working smart.
Setting up every game with tactics geared to a defensive, rearguard action whilst looking to counter attack only works if you have players with pace and ability. We don't have that style of player, consequently the best we can hope for is a point in a draw but one mistake leads to that being blown out of the water - as has happened several times already this season.

We're not a big club. If we did get relegated nobody in the media would bat an eyelid or be surprised by it.

Forest, Leeds and Wednesday are all much bigger clubs than us.

I don't think the media batted an eyelid when the unclean went down. They would have been more upset if it had been Palace.

Does the size of the debt define the size of a club then ?

I class any team who has played in the PL is the last 5-10 years a big club.

Leeds accepted. I think you're very wrong with the other two. Both living (just) on a lost reputation, nothing more than that.

Obviously not, we have been relegated to the third twice before, and to the fourth once. Between 1979-1989 we only played 4 years in the top 2 divisions. It's not like there isn't precedence for it. Besides, no club is too big to go down. Why have Villa, Leeds, Wednesday, Forest, Man City, Wolves, Sheffield United all spent time in the third tier? It's bad management.

When those clubs are well run, they will inevitably be top flight or near the top of the championship. Good management is the same reason why Barnsley, Brighton, Notts County, Wimbledon etc have spent seasons in the top division.

So Burnley, Derby, Stoke, Wigan and Blackpool are big clubs but Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds aren't?

At least they have a past reputation to live on. We have got absolutely nothing to boast about, past or present.

Nothing is impossible, but as unlikely as it is that we will get automatic promotion, we are equally unlikely to end up going down. This is not based on my normal cheery feelings, but simply that we have a squad that is plenty good enough to be comfortable in this league. We will need to get going soon, but there are 36 games left...

Give over you Pig lover. Forest & the Pigs have both had lower average crowds than us in recent years when in the same division.

Reading, Charlton, Watford, Palace, Ipswich, Bradford all big clubs?

Oh really? Brilliant. That makes us bigger then.

Thank you so much for enlightening me.

I wasn't aware that having a few more thousand people inside Bramall Lane than the City Ground for the past few years trumps their FA Cup win in 1959, League Title in 1978 and 2 European Cups in 1979 and 1980. I bet they're so jealous of us.

They've (the pigs) won 1 trophy in 7 decades. The same Trophy picked up by Luton and Oxford. It's a bit like 2 bald men fighting over a comb. If that's the reputation they're living off, we'll have to disagree about your metrics.....:)

It's still more than we've won.

As have Wimbledon, Oxford and Luton in living history. They aren't big clubs and you're stretching the logic to back your point.

Over the last 5 years we've averaged higher crowds. We were the last of the 2 to average over 30,000. The time before it was us again. They haven't managed it in 40 years. We have a far higher turnover as a business and on the field have been superior for a decade. Their trophy cabinet is slightly less empty than ours, but both very dusty. You conclude that they're a "much bigger club than us". Not surprising people whiff a hint of pork in your post....:D

We won the 4th Div title. :)

Apart from those few years when they were managed by the best manager that has ever lived, Forest were like most teams, a few honours, mostly two or three generations ago. All this 'bigger club/smaller club' stuff is just a pissing contest...

I'm not stretching anything. I never said winning the League Cup within living memory was an automatic qualification for being a big club.

I don't see how comparing Wednesday to Oxford and Luton is relevant. Surely you're not honestly saying that Wednesday are on a par with those two?

Neither Luton nor Oxford have played in the top flight for the past 20 years and both play in stadiums that can barely hold 10,000 people.

The only stuff of substance in all of that is that we have finished above them in the league for the past decade which is something I take great delight in and hope it continues for another decade.

But you can't just ignore all the other things that Wednesday achieved in recent times that greatly surpasses anything we have done in living memory.

You've lost me fella. What things? Seriously, what?

All but Bradford yes i would say so, the original point i was try to make bob was we are a big club as we haven't spent a single season in the 3rd tier since the mid-late 80's.

  • 15 seasons (9 consecutive) in the top flight from 1984 to 2000.
  • In 1992 they almost won the League Title finishing just 7 points behind Leeds.
  • 1991 League Cup winners.
  • 1993 League Cup runners-up.
  • 1993 FA Cup runners-up.
  • 1993 UEFA Cup participants.

Is that enough?

No, not at all. So they won one 2nd rate cup, as I said, as did Luton and Oxford. Wimbledon surpassed them.

The rest, to me anyway, is just guff. Miles bigger? Hmmmm.........

Guff? You must be having a laugh. If we had done all that stuff we'd never shut up about it.

Since when has finishing 3rd in the top tier been guff? The last time we did that was in 1900!

By your measure Bolton are much bigger too. I just don't agree, but if you're impressed, hey ho.

2 recent stints and currently residing in England's third division
Escaped a drop to the fourth by the skin if thier teeth
Wrapped in debt and fighting off administration
Haven't managed a top half finish in England's second division in a decade
Haven't averaged over 30,000 - even during the times when you were falling in love with them....:D

Fucking MASSIVE I tell yer....:D

It makes me laugh how you try to belittle their achievements even though it is better than anything that we have done. How fucking shite does that make us?

I'm not saying that Wednesday are a big club per se, of course they're not that would be absurd, they're a million miles away from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.

All I'm saying is that they are a bigger club than us and if you can't see that then you must either be deluded or extremely biased.

Does it really? I'm a Blade and quite proud of it. And when I'm told that our third division neighbours as "much bigger" than us becaus they came quite close to next to nothing tewnty years ago, I like to make my point. Sorry and all that.....:D

Deluded - No. Biassed yes. As I see it, I measure it differently to you, in a perfectly valid way to me.

Just where do you hide your "I Love David Hirst" posters though?

UTB

can o point out another MASSIVE club, southampton many seasons in top flight, won silverware huge crowds of almost 15,000 in old stadium, a 32,800 in the new one which isnt getting filled are they too bigger than the blades?
sorry PeterNdlovu081 the argument doesnt hold water.
in old league 4 we ripped up almost every teams home attendances when the blades were in town, i dont remember our porcine cousins accross town breaking records in league 1 added to that the sty is falling apart.
face it WE ARE BLADES and will always outshine the blue n white half of sheffield :)
and always remember 3rd place is 2nd best LOSER :D

Well there's no point in continuing the discussion then if you're just going to ignore everything you don't like to hear. You're basically just sticking your fingers in your ears, looking the other way and going "blah blah blah" very loudly because you can't accept the truth.

Are you an owl? Serious question.
