Fucking hell, why don’t you judge the window when it’s over.

Same cycle for the last few seasons on this form. Start off full of optimism when we’re linked with a few players at the start of a window, mid window chuck the toys out the pram and then end up pretty chuffed with the overall window once all the business is concluded.

Will be interesting to see if the third element of your observation comes to fruition.
Yes we were linked with the likes of Eze, Watkins, Benrahma, Dennis Hendo et al where I thought we might be shopping.
Then we signed Rambo (no complaints), jags, Rodwell and rumour Kieran Freeman might be resigned. Additionally our rumoured targets are Swift, Cash, Burke whilst we are being bullied by Forest and Reading so the bar is lower.
So, will big(ish) rabbits be extracted from SUFC’s hat?

Surprising there are very few overseas signings being muted

Good lord, are you on the wind up? Take a more positive at it mate. We just finished 9th in the prem and tbh deserved to finish higher. There's zero reason to think we'll be one of the worst 3 teams in the prem next season.

It's ok to be cautious or pessimistic... But no need with Blades currently. They're my main reason to smile these days, which is not something I could often say about Sheff Utd.

Me too B56. Reminds of a time when I had just started going to the school disco and discovered that girls weren't just soppy things with pigtails who couldn't climb trees, play conkers or football.

Re your outlook on dem Blades in this transfer window, I think you reflect the anxiety that some of us feel who have been watching a long time. We've arrived at a place a bit like we had back in the early 1970's, where we found ourselves with a good team and manager, playing good football in the premier division of English football. What happened back then was we failed to cement that place because we didn't push the envelope a bit in terms of adding even more quality and depth to the squad. Instead, we tried to do it on the cheap and whilst it's possible to get lucky and find a few diamonds in the rough, there has to be a balance between that and investing in some serious quality players to make progress. We had a few ageing players in that squad and of course we lost our star player to a rival. And we were on the slide from there.

No one wants to see us do that now because we're in such a good place. However, I don't think there's any reason to get concerned tbh. I think we've got an ambitious manager who knows what he's doing and he has the support of the Board who will do whatever they can to back him. That's a bit different to the situation back in the early '70's, not that Harris wasn't a good manager, he was, but the Board back then was a parochial, frugal one, that didn't invest in the playing squad.

I think this transfer window is no different to many others and as someone already described it very well, the low-hanging fruit come in first, but there will be others follow, we just need to give it time. I'm quite encouraged by many of the names we are being linked with, I know not all will happen, but if we do see the likes of Swift and Cash turn up here, and I think we will, then those two will be great signings and add more bite and pace to the team. But there'll be others as well and I'm looking forward to not being disappointed! 👍

Harris preferred to play the youth players rather than go on the transfer market. He signed only two players (Reece in 1965 and Punton in 1966) from other league clubs between 1961 (after signing Allchurch) and 1967 (before signing Carlin) and didnt really make much effort to ask the board for more money. The only time he was noticeably in a disagreement with the board was the sale of Mick Jones and he threatened to resign in disgust.

We had our best season in 74/75 under Furphy after Harris was gone. The reason we failed to push on was fuck all to do with lack of ambition. We built the South Stand on debt, with the plan that there would be a supermarket beneath to help us pay. Piggy Council stopped the supermarket and we had to sell, let alone buy.

Salmons to Stoke at the end of 73/74 was actually the beginning of the end - death by a thousand cuts. Living beyond your means is not living at all, it’s dreaming. Ask Mr Micawber. I think Micawber is Tufty’s ancestor.

I agree that the South Stand outlay crippled us. I didn’t know that about the supermarket plan, that’s interesting and unsurprising given the way Sheffield (Wednesday) council has “supported” us down the years.

What I recall is us shopping in the bargain basement for players like Franks, Garbett, Longhorn, who weren’t good enough to play at that level. That’s what I mean by lack of ambition.

I like the Micawber analogy though! :D

But how do you avoid shopping in the bargain basement if you haven't got any money?
 
Firstly..if Berge hadnt been signed 6 months early wed be sat here saying ffs have we really spent 40m on a keeper and a Norweigan midfielder?

Secondly I think this apparent 'penny pinching' approach is because we are talking about back up players where CW has a valuation hes not prepared to go above both in terms of fee and wages. Im pretty confident a substantial sum has been allocated to a new striker and when thats spent we can all relax a little.

Franks and Garbett were OK for me. As for Longhorn - wasn’t he a Sirrel signing? Enough said!!

Good question!

I don’t think the loan market was available back then, otherwise that may have been an option.

I suppose the answer is borrow some (i.e. get some investment in), or buy one or two good quality players instead of several average ones.

I’m not suggesting there was an easy solution btw, but down the years we seem to have been hamstrung by our own policies, lack of ambition, crooked or asset-stripping Board.

I think we’re in a different place now (hopefully) so I’m a lot more confident that we will build from this position rather than see it eroded away for various reasons.

Spending a hundred bags on Guthrie in that close season didn't help.

Probably right about borrowing but back then money wasn't quite as easy to come by and loans were secured and payable by directors.
We had a few dodgy ones but even the straight ones were just local business men, none nearly as wealthy as the new style ushered in by say Jack Walker.

Failed supermarket is a new one on me?
Relegation was the main reason we went down the pan.
The debt on the stand strangled us almost
t to death.Culminating with a season in the bottom division..Brearley came on the scene and arrested the slide but the piggy council stamped on Brearleys plan to turn Bramall lane into something special (Bramall lane centre was what it was to be called).
He then seemed to lose a bit of enthusiasm
and moved out leaving us in trouble.
Relegation from division 1 in 1975was the start of 45 years of frustration for us fans .
Constantly moving through the divisions up and down.
Will we break the mould this time?
I think Wilder is our last chance in my lifetime anyway.
It's as though a spell has been put on us for building that south stand and kicking cricket out.
Hopefully we will put it to rest with CWAK at the helm.

Yes that's very true Harrisblade. I was thinking that when I wrote it - hence my use of the word "parochial". I don't mean that to be as negative as it may sound, but I do think the club was run for years by "local" folks without the necessary networks to bring in wider investment. I'm thinking of that Hassall/Wragg, era.
 
Sutcliffe in The Athletic today saying we were after Dennis but have been priced out at a cost of 20 million. Disappointing if true.
 
Who else is expecting Wilder to surprise us all with this signing? I think (hope) he might be being extra sneeky and letting Leeds, Villa and Fulham do their business before going all out for Dennis in the 11th hour, unfortunately seems the only way we will do our business this season

Villa Get Watkins, Leeds have Rodrigo, Brighton Get González, Fulham don’t particularly need a striker but could see them going in for Origi, leaves us with no premier league rival for our target. Just depends on foreign clubs
