Feels like a typical Wilder signing. As a RCB I actually think it could work. He’d have to take a serious wage cut though. At some point we’re going to meet this wage cliff edge and have to either jump or step back and keep trying to pull rabbits from the hat.

You can't be a terrible player to play 165 times for Manchester United and 27 times for England.

Some players need to find the right place and position to really thrive - look at Chris Basham. I expect if a top 10 Premiership club were linked with him 4 years ago their fans would have been baffled.

Him at RCB isn't that crazy of a thought... until his probable wage demands come through...

I don't see how a different bit of polyester to wear significantly affects the likelihood of shitting the bed against fellow Premier League teams.
How about playing in a different formation, with totally different tactics? Could that bring our strengths and reduce weakness?

Well it appears I'm going against the majority but I could see the benefits of signing him. Able to cover CB, RCB, DCM, lots of Prem experience, has played in a back 3 etc.

He's obviously had a poor couple of seasons but I wouldn't be surprised if CW is indeed interested.

However, I just can't see how it would stack-up financially - I'd expect his salary demand to be way in excess of Utd's limit and could see him going to a West Ham, Newcastle, Everton, Villa type of club.

And just to be really unpopular - I actually thought Mousse's challenge on him that led to the goal was a foul 😬

Common sense shouldn’t be applied to this thread lightly.

Can't see any premiership team.s takings punt on him his fitness, record is dysmal.
Wilder has a track record of taking such a player ,Mcgoldrick.
He would have to accept our wage structure but he should be desperate for 1st team football.
His agent will be touting him a round so if the feeling amongst clubs is a bit negative then this could be a goer.
Wilder is unlikely to be conned ! so if our best manager through history wants him who are we to say ! nay!!!

It was. You maverick.

He wouldn't be able to play the way Wilder would want - awful with the ball at his feet. Remember the first half vs Newton Heath (3-3 game)? He looked like he had two left feet, couldn't pass wind. Shambles, and that's part of the reason Ole took him off at h/t. They like to play out from the back, as do we sometimes...and can you imagine him trying to overlap? Zero composure - it would be a car crash.

You dont play for Man utd or England if you cant play or pass a ball,we also dont play out from the back not like most teams do ! cant see that changing much this season .
Some teams play themselves into trouble doing that.We rarely attempt it !

Thank fuck for that... Can see him being somewhat decent at pub league level.
Why all this hatred of a player if Wilder wants him (and it could be all rubbish anyway) he obviously thinks he can offer the team something.
Occasionally we have this questioning of our leader ! he's not god ! and not right all the time but he should command our respect or do some on here know more about the game.
He's been professionally involved all his life so I wouldnt question his judgment and I have been a blade for near on 70 years and seen plenty of dross.

There are some really strong, perhaps slightly wild opinions in here. Jones is another player that Sir A.Ferguson said could be Man Utd's best ever player (form temporary, class permanent, etc). Jones would be coached by the same people that made Bash, Egan and JOC one of the best defences in the world. I'm not saying we'll sign him, but if we did, I'd have high hopes. He's only 28 btw.

But I still don't think we'll sign him! I'd guess he'll go overseas or to Scotland, or even remain a squad player for Man Utd. His wages are massive, so would have to show real commitment to slash them and join us. Plus Man Utd may be able to ask £10m+ for transfer fee.

I said Johnny Evans was shite throughout his career. Then he rocked up at Leicester and is now top drawer!

I was about to mention exactly the same. My view on Evans will not be shifted either, regardless of how inconveniently solid he might have appeared to become.

Although under contract until 2023 perhaps Man utd are willing to let him go cheap .We have former blades academy manager and scout working for Man utd, could be they have passed on the info to Blades.
If he's not part of Olie's plan's and taking space they could use better who Knows! We have a budget and Wilder needs to tread carefully so we'll see.
More likely to be false news !

If we sign the Elephant Man and Phil Jones then Jones will still be the ugliest player in our team.

Hes not infallible and yep he was terrible against us but him being shite is overplayed, mainly due to the microscope on him at Man United and England. Hes 28 and been to two world cups, played almost 30 times for England and nearly 200 games for Man United. You dont get to do that if your as bad as people are making out.

All 3 of our centre halfs have made some bad mistakes this year, difference is they arent under the same spotlight Jones is. If Egan made the mistakes he did for Abrahams goal for Chelsea at the Bridge or the mistake that led to his red card v Newcastle and he was playing for Man United hed be pilloried.

If he fits the wage structure and is cheap / free he could be a very astute signing and good cover at the back.

Carlton Palmer got 18 caps for England, presumably making him a better player than Tony Currie.

Jones got England caps because being English and at Manchester United made him an automatic pick.

Wilder can turn shit to gold. But I doubt he'd do owt for Stones, how the FUCK did he ever get to play for England?

Any English Centre Back who can pass the ball in sometime even vaguely resembling a straight line will become instantly hugely overrated.

See also Woodgate, Jonathan.

Stones is the worst of the lot though. His incompetence got England knocked out of two consecutive tournaments.

Our back five for the past season were signed from Brentford x2, Blackpool, MK Dons and League 2 Portsmouth. And now people are showing disdain at the prospect of bringing in someone with 165 games under his belt for one of the biggest teams in the world. Have people gone mad?

Missing your point here.. Dean Hammond also had a wealth of experience and he was dog shit.
