When can we start talking about Europe?

I don't know about you but I would consider 6 out of 8 (75%) of those opposition teams to be quite well known.

I'm not really sure what the people who don't want us to qualify for the Europa League are saying?
Would they really rather us finish 8th or below in The Premier League than 5th or 6th?
I could understand a preference against us finishing 7th and joining the Europa League competition in July but if we do, so be it.

If Europe is our destination does the prince cough up money for the improvements or does he sit on his hands and make us use the “old boots”. Whatever happens the fact we can even talk about this is truly remarkable.

At 34 years old my mentality is that we’re a big club but only just in the top 20 of the country for the whole history/fan base etc but one thing that’s wound me up over the years us lack of ambition we’re far too cautious from past mistakes and past bad luck that’s gone against us. None of us want the club to end up in a situation like Portsmouth but at the same time we’re in this game for silverware and nothing else. You make some good point.
 
Wait what the fuck is going on? Are we really arguing about not wanting to get into Europe next season? Put things into perspective blades haha

4 years ago tomorrow (14th Jan) we lost against Walsall 4-1 with Jack O'Connell scoring our only goal..

IMO I'd love for us to get into Europe, why can't we just use it as an goal to strive for? It's obviously safe to say we're not going down..

I also have 15 quid on united to finish in the top 4 so that'd be nice!
 
A no brainer for me as I’ve commented on several posts of a similar theme.

I’m in my late forties and have never seen us in European competition.Maybe we will be in with a chance as a successful premier league club for the next 20 years but then again this might be our best chance for the next 20 yard. Personally I’d rather take it while we can.

To say that we will suffer the following season is simply opinions and no more. There’s no direct correlation between the two. Whose to say we won’t play in Europe and go on to have an even better season next season than this? There’s as much chance of that happening then us having a poor season.
 
People need to realise the strenght of the English game right now. The strenght of the whole of th Premier League and Championship from the top to the bottom of each league (becuase of the genuine trickling down of the tv money) gets better every year. Its completely different to the early 90s, the budget of any premier league team is huge and comparable to the income of most big teams in europe (outside of real, barca and bayern). Look at wolves this season, theres nothing to be afraid of

Having Wilder take us into Europe would be a monumental peak of modern times.

I'm all for it. I'm sure Chris, Alan and Matt would prepare correctly for it as hey have done so far.

It would be handy to get a bit of help. League Cup and FA Cup winners being from the top 4. Assuming we don't finish in the top 4 or win the FA Cup 😆

I seem to think that gives an extra place or two to the league. Would mean up to 7th would qualify. Not much chance of it dropping below that as the UCL winner would need to come from outside the top 4 or Europa winner.

At the moment that would be Man U, Blades, Wolves for the we spots. So unless Wolves with the Europa League, then it's 5th, 6th or 7th for Europe.

I'm sure Spurs, Arsenal and even Palace will push on. That said, Spurs without Kane for most of the season, Man U without Maguire for a good while.
 
We've obviously got a chance and if we qualify it would be a fantastic experience however if we don't I want complain. Im just happy we've secured Premier League safety.

If we did the unthinkable and qualified would we be able to play at Bramall Lane?

I’m sure there is a rule that stadiums must have a perimeter fence 2m from the stadium.
 
Does anyone know how different the requirements are for the stadium and facilities compared to the EPL?
Are they a higher standard? I would assume this is partly what HRH was referring to in his interview?
As mentioned at various points throughout this thread. If given the chance then we need to take it as it may not come along again for a while.
Do people think that CW would not take Europe?
You would have been thought insane to even think this 4 years ago haha!

Id take Europe even if it meant being in the bottom 6 next season.. I don’t think that’s a trade off that we would have to make personally but historically it has proven to be the case..
People can highlight squad depth and rightly so but end of the day everyone has a 25 limit player and it’s up to the club to make sure those 25 players are the best we can get.

I’ve fallen out of love with the cups, maybe that’s me or maybe that’s the fact clubs put so little emphasis on them now, until the last minute. Having said that we should be aiming for Europe and the cups. These are all achievable goals now.

And you’re right. its crazy to think about when you consider the not so distant past, included Gillingham away, that Chesterfield players reactions to a tackle, Dean Hammond, the flying geese celebrations, losing to Yeovil,Ched Saga the list is pretty much endless

So if Man C or Liverpool win the 2 cups then 6th 7th 8th are up for europa league spots? (5th place champions league because of Man C)

if we can get 12 from that group of fixtures it’d take us to 44 points with 8 games remaining another 12 points from the remaining 8 games could possibly see us qualify for Europe. A couple of problem’s we’d have though is an FA cup run and also the fact the last 8 games include Man U, Chelsea Leicester and Spurs.
I’ve had a quick look at the previous few seasons Burnley qualified on 54 points which we’re 22 points off at the moment.

So when will everyone else be happy to seriously talk about Europe or are you already?

Forgot I’d posted this, just seen the date and it seems an age away !! Well I said originally 12 points from that group of fixtures would do to keep us on track and we’re halfway towards the target I set.

Now let me update it and stay realistic.

Brighton (h)
Norwich (h)
Newcastle (a)
Man U (a)
Spurs (h)
Burnley (a)
Wolves (h)

I think we’re more than capable of coming out of them fixtures with 10 points which would take us onto 49 points with 3 games remaining. Like I said 54 points can qualify you for Europe and it could see us needing to win 2 of the last 3 fixtures.
obviously lots of variables between now and then but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be one hell of a end to the season if we don’t let our form slip.

You’ve missed the Chelsea (H) and Aston Villa (A) fixtures.

So 2 wins from the last 5 matches may be required based on your stats

I’d be a bit more optimistic with the points estimate from those games. Which is good because our final 3 games look much harder than they did back in August.

All banana skins and I could even see it go horribly wrong, finishing a great season with 3 defeats. Sorry about that.

In this league it could happen with any three games - but not so far.
 
Just to do a bit of dampening enthusiasm, but IF either Wolves, Man U or Arsenal win the Europa League (that is possible) AND either Chelsea or Tottenham win the Champions League (ok unlikely after Totthenham this week and Chelsea play Bayern on Tuesday), AND both winners finish outside of the Top 4, then 4th place will only get you in the Europa League. Be careful who you cheer for in the European games!

Villa winning the tin pot cup won’t help us either. It could end up where we think we’re going to qualify for Europe and then circumstances go against us. I remember Spurs finishing fourth and no one thinking Chelsea had any chance of winning the European Cup.

We could finish 7th, City win their appeal, Villa and Man U win the cups and Arsenal win the Europa.

Yes, although I think I’m coming down with the coronavirus so don’t take my word for it. If Wolves won the Europa Cup only two English clubs would go into the Europa League in the following season as you can only have seven clubs in Europe in total. That’s what happened when Man U won it anyway.
