Interview with Binnion

It's a confusing situation when boy wonder young player-developer, encouraged to be part of Wilder's 'Technical Committee" three years ago, gives all those years service and suddenly leaves. No proper explanation given and this interview leaves questions unanswered.

He was part of the future, the future has been realised so suddenly and yet ' boy-wonder' leaves. Needs a closure surely. The lad has to move on elsewhere f.g.s. He'll need a reference.
 
Trav has been brilliant for this club!

Good luck to him when he finally decides to get back into coaching after having a well earned break. Not something that he wanted though, I’m pretty sure of it.

Danny04 in my humble opinion mate, you've got to find the story here.
Did Travis, a predominantly "hands dirty" shouting & pointing Coach, actively court the senior job once Nick Cox left?
Talent + Opportunity = Success. What does Travis think about "Opportunity" at SUFC in recent years?
A lot is said about Maguire and Opportunity in the interview. Did Maguire get the Opportunity because he was so good? Or did he get the Opportunity because the first team was much weaker than now & "we'd better try someone else"? Or was there a more progressive We Provide Opportunities strategy?
And the question posed by Woodwardfan, which I'll paraphrase as "what's happened that's resulted in Travis leaving"?

Naturally, I'll provide any Vox Pop, Academy colour, for what I'm sure would be a very interesting article for The Star.

Very well said, there's a whole new book there Ball_Sup (Phil) ! The heralded 'Pathway' at our club has not materialised because the success of our manager has 'overtaken' the opportunity to blood youngsters in the first team. This is a serious problem at every level of the leagues where the apparent thirst for instant success, and sacking anybody who doesn't achieve it, completely disrupts the supply chain of U.K. players. Gone are the times when a Jagielka can be nursed through his first 50 league games before he establishes himself as a first team player.

I posted about this issue when Whiteman left for Doncaster where he has this week been the target of a 'substantial 7 figure bid'. Even recently I suggested he should be making up the numbers in our squad now, having gained his experience out on loan. I reckon he could benefit massively from training every day with our new squad and it would be up to him to earn a place in the first team, as a competitive, skilled holding midfield player. By all means loan him out to a top half Championship side and his breakthrough season here could be next year.

Having said all that, I reckon the root cause of all this is in fact the loan system which merely facilitates a larger club farming out promising players to smaller clubs who 'should be grateful' to take the opportunity to borrow their services for a short while. There was no Loan System in the old days and by and large it is there for the benefit of big clubs getting bigger, not grass root UK football.. That's a whole separate issue for another book! We are one of the Big Boys now though and have to play on the playing field that's there.

Another question for Danny04 to ask is whether the 'Technical Committee' still exists and whether Jack Lester is on it. I'm not saying it should exist now we are up amongst the giants but such as Chelsea have moved full circle and their 'penny has dropped' that they need to create opportunites at home for their best young lads; some major balancing act that is for them. Man Utd have done it to some degree, almost by default. Liverpool have an odd home grown player and Spurs a few more. We have just Sharp almost by accident. Is that testimony to a great job done by Binnion and Cox? Or is it someone else's failure.

Wilder has had to do what he needed to do to fashion his 'miracle'. Whiteman (and Read i.m.o) slipped away unnecessarily but the 'pathway' can be established as we gain more and more control of our upward momentum.
 
I couldn't agree more about Reed. Great player and tough as old boots. I take it the Whiteman bid is from Hull City. Shows what Grant McCann thinks of him!!
 
I cant help thinking that all the current crop out on loans will end up going the same way, released or full transfered out to a lg 1/2 club then with game time end up playing in the same league as us but for another club!
 
We don't have a PL Academy because we haven't been there for 12 years and haven't had the finance to move up to the top category.

As we were in the third tier little over 2 years ago it's unlikely we'll have players coming through the youth system good enough to step into a PL squad.

Brooks would have but was sold and funded our promotion.

No idea why Binnion has gone but struggling to see much concern about the lack of pathway at present.

If I remember correctly he only played because we had a few injuries. It was luck, like Brooks. Much of it seems to be down to luck with us. We've not really had any sort of recognisable pathway. Obviously I rapid ascent means it's not realistic at the moment but we never gave kids a proper chance in league 1.
