Neal Maupay

Yep, understand the reasons for offloading Bentley but I'm not sure Raya is any better based on the ~10 times I've seen him play.

He'd be a more expensive option (by how much I'm not sure) but I would have thought someone like Alex McCarthy at Southampton (who they're trying to move on) or even Westwood at the Massive would have been a better bet.

We thought we had that position sorted with Dan Bentley, but he had a bit of a nightmare season last time out (confidence went?).

And seeing as he was entering the last year of his contract and other, richer, clubs were interested, we cashed in and sold him to Bristol C for around £2m. (We had signed him from Southend for a bit over £1m, so maybe 75% profit?)

We then signed Spanish gk David Raya from Blackburn for £3m, as befits our new-found status as "The PSG of the Championship" ;)

Was Bentley in goal when we played you at Griffin Park last season? If so, I think we may have dented his confidence that night.

To whom it may concern

I am trying to be obnoxious unfortunately you don’t seem bro understand this , exactly like you don’t seem to understand Maupay is leaving your small little inconsequential football ball club. Not sorry

Yours insincerely
David Blade

Dear David Blade,

I once again look forward to your correspondence. I understood perfectly your initial swipe and your obnoxiousness did not go unnoticed but, as a lofty Brentford supporter should, chose to rise above such flimsy banter and to respond with due respect.

Given your worldly football knowledge you'll have no doubt noted that we've just signed yet another player. It would seem as if we're duly spunking the Maupay Monies up the wall already.

Cordially,

BEES?

When the Academy system was overhauled at the beginning of this decade, Benham embraced it as enthusiastically as anyone, inc with hard cash, when we were in Lge One.
It was only when the PL and FL moved the goalposts that he realised the club was now investing time and money for the benefit of a few wealthy PL clubs. So where was the best interest of English football there?
So that if other FL clubs cannot/will not recognise that, and take innovative action to remedy it, as is mostly the case, then why should BFC be held back from trying something new? Oh yeah, we've got to give a helping hand to the likes of M.City and M.Utd, clubs particularly noted for acting in the best interests of Eng;lish football....

From 2013:
Description
"As part of Brentford FC’s highly successful youth development programme, the club is required to provide an indoor training hall in order to retain its FA Category 2 Academy status.
The football club has developed a unique partnership with Uxbridge High School to enable the indoor hall to be built within the school grounds with the Academy scholars also attending the school during the week. Likewise the new sports facilities are also used by students at the school together with the classrooms that are also incorporated in the scheme.
Wrenbridge Sport were the project managers for Brentford FC and Uxbridge High School. The scheme was successfully delivered on budget in the Autumn of 2013 and is now fully used by both the Club and school."
https://www.wrenbridge.co.uk/project/brentford-football-club/

As you will see from the photo in the above link, the (7-figure) Sports Hall at Uxbridge High School is most definitely above ground. ;)

So to summarise, rather than get ripped off by PL vultures when developing 8-16 y.o's, BFC decided to invest instead in giving a second chance to some of the (literally) thousands of 17-21 y.o's who get thrown on the scrap heap every year by other clubs, as they churn vast numbers through their child factories academies.

P.S. There are nearly 20 PL and FL academies within a 30 mile radius of Brentford TW8, open to any parent who wants to find a place for his kid, so no-one need miss out by BFC's change of tack. These include incredibly badly-run clubs like QPR and Reading, who wouldn't recognise creative thinking if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

We've adjusted our academy to the new sitation too, although we've maintained the younger element. We've started targeting older academy products and using the academy as a finishing school. See Che Adams (non league), David Brooks (Man City) and Aaron Ramsdale (Bolton) as successful recent examples of this approach. They're all in the the Premier League now. We've also had sell on clauses from the Maguire and Walker transfers last season, and a traditional academy player sale in Dominic Calvert Lewin (now at Everton) in recent seasons. United have lost a lot of kids to Cat one academies too- adapting has been necessary.

Thanks for that Ooh Aah (you don't mind the informality, I hope)

Anyhow, possibly my fave bit was the penalty at 6 mins 20 secs, at home to Dirty Leeds. Whilst he waited to be allowed to take it, the travelling fans in the away end gave Neal fearsome pelters, as is their customary m.o.

And although the video didn't really capture all of it, after despatching it coolly, Neal went right up to them and gave them a pose that was pure "Suck on that, you useless twats!" :)

He's just the sort of player you hate when he's on the other team, but love when he's on yours.

Anyhow I'm sure some of you remember that game too, since our 2-0 victory just about saw off Leeds' challenge for 2nd place....

There we go, Billy Bee, that's the kind of reasoned response we like on here. You'll get a much more favourable reaction from us this way, although I am also aware that this post of mine is a tad patronising (unintentionally).

I have a wide selection of intentional ones should you need one...

We remember it very fondly indeed. Wigan doing for them as well was an even more unexpected treat.

I have noticed that lofty position in 2 tier of English football and think this is your zenith so I would take the monies ASAP before you descend in to your rightful position league one or below.

VILLA CLOSE IN ON KONSA
Aston Villa
are closing in on the signing of Brentford centre-back Ezri Konsa, Sky Sports News understands.
Talks are understood to be progressing over a £12m deal, which would trigger a release clause in his contract.

" The Galactic senate have not been informed of any bid for Konsa. If we did, it would be 20m. We dont need to sell. If we did get that price we would sell because that is our business model... Yadda yadda yadda..."

Seems like Villa fans have been lectured by Brentford fans in the recent past as well. Clearly they don't need to sell Maupay now as they're going to trouser another £12m, its all part of their business model apparently :D.
When Bees signed Konsa from Charlton, it was in the face of serious interest from several much bigger clubs, inc PL. One of the reasons he chose us was because it is now widely known that the club provides better opportunity for career progression than eg merely making up a number in a 50-man reserve squad at some PL club.

Part of this is the assurance that so long as we receive due recognition for our part in his development, we won't stand in the way of players if a genuinely better opportunity comes his way. In Konsa's case, I'm pretty sure his Agent will have negotiated a £12m release fee for him, otherwise he wouldn't have signed for us, which is fair enough.

Either way, from £2.5m to £12m (plus sell-on?) in just one season represents excellent business by anyones standards.

And yes, any sale of Konsa, even for so "low" a fee as £12m, makes it easier for us to resist offers for Maupay (or at least drive a much harder bargain)

Don't really know about Raya, tbh.

But neither AMcC or KW fit our model, seeing as they're respectively 30 and 34 next birthday. Whereas Raya is still only 23, meaning he should still be more open to being moulded to our particular requirements, whilst having much greater sell-on potential assuming he improves.

Remember it well. I was on a train coming from Hull packed with happy Blades, including LoughboroBlade , singing "Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again." EalingBlade was actually in attendance cheering you on from the posh seats.

Yep and that's what it is to Benham...a business...all his decisions revolve around money...not saying thats right or wrong but at some point you have to hold on to your best players or you never reach the zenith.

With Egan and OConnell at centre half last season you might be where we are now.

What with you singing it in Yorkshire, and us singing it in Middlesex, I reckon people in Birmingham probably heard it in stereo.

My, isn't it always a good day when you beat, nay humiliate, Dirty Fucking Leeds! 👍

Probably the best was when we went to Elland Road and did them 4-0. They kept us in for an hour afterwards but we really didn't care. There was also the Triple Assault season of 2002/03, when we scored twice in injury time to knock them out of the Worthington Cup 2-1 and then ending their FA Cup run in the Quarter Finals when Steve Kabba scored our late winner. 1-0 but at least they didn't rip the seats out and chuck them on the pitch from the Bramall Lane Upper Tier that time.

I'm not sure if a release clause is triggered you can negotiate a sell on clause thrown in too - unless of course the release clause is £12m + x% sell on fee.

Sorry mate, I can only think you've had your view soured by your lad's experience at the Academy.

Anyhow, if you imagine that Benham's only in it for the money, then you couldn't be further from the truth. Fact is, he's already committed £100m+ to the club, with £75m of that towards the new stadium (and counting), and no guarantee of getting it back.

Moreoever, he's committed to finding up to £13m every single season to cover operating losses and keep us within FFP Rules. Of course, transfer profits have been higher than budgeted for recently, but even then, you can see how those are being reinvested by the £15m(?) spent on 6 new players this window (and counting).

Or put it another way, what multimillionaire in his right mind would invest money like that in a club like Brentford - yep, tiny little tinpot Brentford - if all he was concerned about was making more money?

With Egan and OConnell at centre half last season you might be where we are now.
You don't seem to understand.
When Benham took over, we were potless, indeed swimming in debt. (Think Leyton Orient*).
Soon we started buying players for £500k and hoping to sell them for maybe a million.
Next we were buying them for a million or two and hoping to sell them for maybe 5 or 6 (eg Egan).
Now we're shopping for players for 3 or 4 million, and hoping to sell them for £10m+ (Konsa? Maupay?)
Now of course the "churn" involved may set us back in the short term, but in the mid-to-long term it is represents a continual upgrade in everything we do, from scouting, development, coaching to off-pitch operations, meaning that when we move into our new stadium, we'll be ready to take advantage of an elevated status.
And if (when?) we finally should make it to the Prem, then it won't have been as a result of a short-term 'dash for cash' like so many others (eg QPR), but all part of a much longer term plan which should give us the best possible chance of staying there.

* - Remind me where Orient have been recently. Non-League, wasn't it?

From earlier today in relation to Maupay. It is about all there has been.

I've got a lot of time for Brentford and what you're doing. It must be frustrating for you at times with the constant selling but it's the way to gradually build until you're in a position where you have 5/6 top class players and can challenge. I think you'll go up this year. If not, next year. It's only a matter of time.

Until CW walked in the door we were devoid of any plan, as our extended stay in the 3rd tier proved. So good luck with yours.

Don’t you think that if the deal is close to what you want and he wants PL football he’ll go?

Don’t know what he’s like and how he would react if Brentford blocked his move but keeping an unhappy player isn’t always good for team cohesion etc,

It’s reaching that stage as with most players we’re rumoured with. I’m almost completely bored with the subject of Maupay.

I’m sure I’ll hear as soon as we’ve signed him, probably when he’s 33 and already done the rounds. Bye for now thread :)
