I sometimes have a look on the Sunderland forum and saw this thread. Obviously a match that they have fonder memories of than we do. I remember thinking we had blown our promotion chances!

Game of two halves we should have been out of sight by h/t. Marco G always did well against us, he scored both the next season and also for palace later. Always think deano and Marco would have been the perfect partnership.

I went to that game.
Mackems came to the Lane in massive numbers for that game - they made an amazing volume of noise and jumped around in the BLUT, I thought it was going to collapse.

I don't remember it as having blown our chances, but after scoring in the first minute and as I remember the better side in the first half we fell apart in the second.

We have a history of nightmare performances against Sunderland at the Lane, two in 1990 and the 0-4 Michael Bridges pasting easily springing to mind.

To be fair, when we lose in August I assume our season is over :)

Don't forget that amazing win, first match of the season:- 2-0 with Deano's comeback and the likes of Borbokis, Quinn and Fjortoft in the side - must have been around 1997.

I remember the noise they made being significant. How many do you think they brought? They’d have had standing beneath too. Always travelled in good numbers the mackems.

I remember thinking Bracewell was good. I understand he was a great player but had a bad injury and this was him post injury. They had a kid called Brady who looked really good but didn’t have the career that my young eyes thought he would. Of course Gabbiadini scores. I’d started going regularly the previous season and more so this one as I was another year older and didn’t feel the need to be taken by an adult any more. I’d be 13/14.

Ian Bryson at Roker Park, howling wind, under Gary Bennetts foot and in off the post, on a 7 match winning run...………...the blades are staying up!

They'd gone up that season through the playoffs but lost in the final- Swindon were denied promotion due to a betting scandal and the pigs thought they should have stayed up in their place!

Aye but there was the silver lining that Bridges outstanding performance ' encouraged' Bruce to 'hang up his boots' ( at half time)

They were also one of the triumvirate (along with Arsenal & Notlob) that begat the 'joke' @ Christmas / New Year (77-78?) about our new phone number being 505151 after we suffered 3 consecutive (5 goal) gubbings

Plus beating us 6 - 2 @ Joker Park when Sabella took em on single handed
- still good for a (pity) pint up here when I tell em I'm a Blade & in attendance along with them eulogising how special Sabella was that night - sadly he didn't do it often enough for us (albeit in a shite side)
