1. We buy players with development potential - those that can contribute immediately but also we're likely to be able to sell for a hefty profit. Those players are mostly young and inexperienced, and therefore we frequently lack the mettle to see ourselves through tricky spells. We'll look invincible in spells and follow those by not winning in 10 games...

2. We've probably been a little further away from promotion than most think. We've finished top half each of the five seasons since we got promoted (top 10 for 4 of those I think), so we're on people's radars now but we've prioritised becoming financially self-sufficient. Out first two seasons up saw us buy players in the £500k-£1.5m range and sell them for £3m-£5m. We've gradually improved the state of the squad so that we're able to spend £1.5m-£3.25m and sell for £5m-£12m+.

It's probably worth noting quite how small we are as a club compared to most in this division - our commercial revenues are the lowest in the league and Griffin Park costs us a fortune. We've become a mainstay of the top half of the Championship despite being the only side who hasn't chucked money at it - our transfer activity has had to be so much better than others in the division otherwise we'll fall quickly behind. We've lived within our (tiny) means. We don't take that solidity for granted, but other clubs generally fail to realise how financially limited we are.

3. Most fans know that there will be a season when we properly go for it. Circumstances need to line themselves up. We wanted to invest heavily in the winter transfer window in our first season up as we were very well placed, but certain of the backroom staff prevented it.

If we go for broke and don't succeed then we're fucked. We don't have a massive infrastructure to fall back on, we don't have a huge fan base, big attendences, etc. For 4 season we generally had a bottom 4 budget but finished top ten. We've since been able to relax the purse strings somewhat and are very well placed as far a FFP goes.

Our management is nothing short of superb but most fans know we're likely to lose players to bigger sides in order to keep on improving the health of the club. For instance, we sold you Egan for £4m. His departure surprised quite a few fans but the DoFs knew we'd have to cash in last summer as he'd have left for free twelve months later - but his replacement was already lined up. We spent £3.25m on Konsa, who was the only Championship player in the England U21 squad this summer and has been touted for a £12m move this last week. We need that sort of revenue/play at sales to allow the club to keep improving.

LesBananas are back...get on your own board and promote The Mighty Blades for away trips to Sheffield. Good city to visit plus a coach of c70 will add £2100.00 to matchday takings. Oh, if you can get tickets lol!😂

I'd be interested in an outsider view - anyone who knows football would say 10 years ago that we were a lower league side and I was there when I genuinely feared we would fall into non-league. Do you think we are now an established Championship side who, even if relegated, you'd back to come back up?

The first game I went to at Brentford was the initial season after we’d dropped to league 1. We were in good form and won comfortably against a side that had Moore and Donaldson in.

The next time I went to Griffin Park was for David Weir’s first away game, 2 seasons later. Brentford were unrecognisably better – we were terrible, Grigg and Forshaw dominating.

Since then, while we toiled away in League 1, Brentford became a consistent outfit in the Championship. By the time we arrive in 2017, it felt like we were playing a mid to upper team – at no point did I think in the last two years that you would drop out of the league. Yes, you have your weird tendency to sell key players to us at bargain prices, but it hasn’t seemed to damage you and you’ve become a very reliable top half team. I don’t see that changing soon.

It does seem like you’re in a bit of a post-Smith transition. I tend to think you have a Swansea style approach to managerial choices – picking people that are best placed to maintain a style. Was Smith’s approach particularly different to Warburton’s? I think you’re a club that pushes above what would ordinarily be expected, but that’s a testament to the way the club is run.

Not a pop at you Guesty, just amusing how folk go from one extreme to another depending on what slight rumour is current. It’s like some kind of bipolar disorder.

It's may be related in some cases. Before "Bi-Polar" become a common phrase to describe it, this condition was known simply as "manic depression" a form of "Mania" - and of course, people with mania were known as "maniacs" - a term we don't hear very often now, probably because it's considered derogatory and non-pc. But, even though we've changed the name to something that sounds a bit more "sciencey" and less offensive, it is the same condition. People with "Bi-Polar" have manic depression. It's just a new term for it, that's all. I feel people with any form of mental illness are to be pitied - it's more common than what we think and they genuinely do need help.

(I see now what you meant with your "the deal is dead" comment. Sorry I'd misinterpreted that as you being one of them!). ;)

However,

We see it commonly, mood swings of the most irrational extreme, hinged on the smallest, sometimes barely related or even irrelevant things, polarising between extremely positive and extremely negative. I'd suggest though that in the majority of cases, these folks do not have Bi-Polar disease - they are just miserable, negative gets, who look at life through a lens that sees every glass as "half-empty" and go around thinking to themselves, "summat bad's gonna 'appen!". Get a few beers inside them and you've got the perfect ingredients for a mood-swing of Titanic proportions. There are an abundance of these in Sheffield. Whether that's because Sheffield's been a pretty hard done to city over the years, or whether it's something else I really don't know. But even one of Sheffield's most famous sons, Neil Warnock, made the same comments when he was managing here. He said it's part of the character trait of many people from here. And having lived and worked all around the country, and abroad, that's also my experience. A nicer set of folk, but a more bloody miserable negative set of folk, who err on the side of caution all the time, who don't want nowt and don't expect owt, and doubt everything, I've yet to meet.

And of course it doesn't apply to everyone from Sheffield. There's a bloke I know in Ranmoor who's totally the opposite to this for example.;)

Oh I’m certainly one of “them”, just which “them” depends on the topic, I just don’t seem to do the incredibly high to incredibly low thing around SUFC. Maybe because I don’t really buy into the rumours, even from RC, it’s fun but it’s nothing more than that until I see them holding our shirt.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not really up on who’s hot and who’s not outside our squad so it doesn’t really mean much to me when names are linked.
Your theory might still hold up though as maybe it’s ‘cos I’m from S40, so I’m only inside city lines if you listen to Royal Mail. 😉

Personally, I think Brentford are one of the more interesting sides in the league. Enjoyed all the matches against them, great away night down at Griffin park this season gone, and for a club of brentfords size never considered them punching above their weight.

Smart recruitment, tough side, decent fans. I have nothing bad to say about them and appreciate fans coming on here and being dedicated to their club and honest. 👍

Brentford are a tiny club of no consequence whatsoever. They will end up where they belong. In Division Three. Maupay will be sold this Summer. So will Watkins and the other bloke. That’s football.

Brentford? Fucking Brentford?

I saw Brentford twice this season - Bramall Lane and New York Stadium where they made hard work of smashing Rotherham 4-2.

In the Rotherham game - Sawyers and Mokotjo formed an effective pair in central midfield. Sawyers oozed quality if not industry whereas Mokotjo seemed to do the 'Championship Kante' role better then anyone else I have seen. Pace in wide positions particularly from Henry & Watkins & the intelligence of Canos & Maupey. Defensively they never seemed to handle pressure; particularly crosses or hoofs up (which perhaps is further proved by McGoldricks 2nd at lane). They conceded two cheap goals at important times in the game where a better side then Rotherham may have taken that helping of momentum and cost them points. If memory serves me right they'd just sold Mepham to Bournemouth so that might explain the fragility that day.

So in summary - dangerous going forward but vulnerable at the back. The signings of Pinnock and Janssen should address their physical weakness. If they do keep hold of Maupey for another season I would certainly consider them playoff contenders.

Maupay. Fucking ‘Maupay’...

I really like the steady development approach. However there are 2 floors in it. The first is that if you ever got promoted to the Prem (difficult using young players as dirty Leeds found out) then you can't continue with the system as you need to acquire to keep, not to sell, if you then go down your system is broken. We could have the problem of having players that we now can't shift as we had to pay to much for them. Secondly it is incredibly difficult to keep finding the kind of talent you have been doing incredibly well. If a key person in that scouting and development system goes elsewhere for more money as an academy somewhere realises how good they are, or the manager goes elsewhere (which has already happened) then this can stop the system dead. I hope for Brentford's sake it continues to help the club as the club have become the new Crewe in terms of developing talent, and like when ex academy players for the Blades do well elsewhere like Maguire, Walker & Jagielka you get a sense of pride that your club contributed to that players development. So I hope it continues to deliver for you.

Nah..................... nosey bastard that's all

Also want this thing resolved as quick as poss so we all move on to the next target
Mt Cadette’s reputation is on the line here isn't it? Gagey also.

Cadette said it was nearly done. It could've been nearly done. That doesn't mean it couldn't fall over, and it doesn't mean his reputation is on the line either. He's got a ridiculous amount right. He knows more than anyone else giving information, including journos, put it that way.

Gage has admitted he was given bad info. In any case, he doesn't really have much of a reputation on transfers.

I'll have a go although I am aware that to many I / we have outstayed our welcome (we didn't really have one anyway I guess).

1. The year we reached the top 6, we sneaked in at the last minute and knew we'd not have enough. The next year was a bit rubbish. Every year there has been little things wrong - last year for example I think we were as good as anyone going forward but our defending was shocking and our away form appalling. Simply, we can't afford the depth of squad we need. Things are changing though Pinnock, Jansson (if he comes) Norgaard improve our defence massively.

2. No, not really. 5 consecutive years in the Championship is an achievement I think given our history, and we like the way we play and are run.

3 A bit but most Bees fans know that we recruit very good players which inevitably attracts clubs with more money than us. We need more time to be in a position to compete. I think we aspire to be a club like Reading - one that has a decent ground and when run properly can compete for promotion. I personally think we are not very far off at all.

I'd be interested in an outsider view - anyone who knows football would say 10 years ago that we were a lower league side and I was there when I genuinely feared we would fall into non-league. Do you think we are now an established Championship side who, even if relegated, you'd back to come back up?

Of course it's frustrating but equally I think we make some very good decisions sometimes when we sell (not always). We're going to have to live like this though for a while but when you consider that we are close to spending £12m on players so far this summer, that's a huge leap forward from even 3 years ago. The strategy is working I believe.
Welcome likely to be extended if your fellow bees keep referring to Sheffield as a 1 club city.

Off the top of my head I'd not place Brentford as a Championship club, that's probably based on my age and your gates. Based in West London though that could change if you stay up long enough. There are probably more billionaires within a mile of your ground than 1/2 the north of England and you only need 1 to get the bug

Not to me. I quite like to hear about your club, you're not up your own arses like other fans. You don't seem to be here to troll. If you have any news re Maupay all the better whether he comes to us or not.
easy in London to support a glamour club so I respect fans of Brentford, Orient,Wimbledon etc
However, when the big boys come calling the outcome is eventually inevitable, especially if the player is ambitious

True, but it's gone from nearly done, to no bids received. Big difference. I'd like to think RC is still the nearest to the truth, but I'm not convinced. Hope I'm wrong though.

Could it be possible that Brentford have allowed us to speak to Neal and his agent?

Could it be possible that personal terms have been agreed?

Could it also be possible that we have not made a bid yet and are simply enquiring with Brentford what figures would secure a deal before actually submitting one?

If the above are correct then it is true that no club has submitted an offer.

But that could easily change at any time.

It's possible but highly unlikely in my opinion. You don't get permission to speak to a contracted player without first getting a bid accepted.

Players’ leeches will speak to anybody with a fiver in their pocket...
