Not sure whether or not the trial thing is true, however it does sound plausible.

Offering him a trial would have been the perfect test of his character to see how much he wants it. If he has turned it down, he’s made a very poor decision and we should steer well clear. He’s 26 and has achieved nothing in his career to date. I’d be surprised if any other Premiership club (possibly even Championship) will offer him an opportunity like this.
