Think these are the only noticeable 7 with contracts expiring that haven't been mentioned about a new deal.

Can't believe Heneghan, Carruthers, Holmes and Thomas still have another year :(

Do you not think that Coutts will be kept if even as an understudy to Norwood (although personally I would like to see Couttsy back at his best)?

Is Ched definitely up this summer? I might well be wrong, but I thought he signed a 3 year contract? Suppose it could be 2 with an option for a third. If he keeps knocking them in for Fleetwood, it might be worth activating it in order to get a fee in the summer- although that could backfire if we cant offload him.

Other than that, can only see Coutts getting extended, and at a push, maybe Cranie if we stay down as he’s reliable, relatively inexpensive and Wilder speaks very highly of him.

Do some people realise that we MIGHT get promoted, has it sunk in yet...…...Conor Washington, a new contract ??????????

We buying a full set of new strikers if we go up then? Doubt we'll commit to that level of spending.

Washington is well under 30, has a bit of pace, and in his cameos hasn't looked that far off it (except Barnet). If he's on low wages why not?

Better than Ched or Lavery sat on the bench on day one of the PL against Man City.

If we get promoted we have to name a 23 man squad, aside from players under 23 or 21. Washington would have to take one of those places to play which I think is unlikely given the current pecking order.

Very much doubt Washington will be around regardless of what division we're in. He's looked okay in his cameos and that's about it. Meanwhile Wilder has used this loan window to bring in two strikers and push Washington down to a likely fifth choice.

Can't see us letting go of Coutts if we're still in the Championship. He's 30 and been out injured so unlikely to have many large bids coming in. He is, however, a hell of a back up for Norwood and if he were to get a chance through injury or suspension you wouldn't bet against him to take the shirt back for a good run of games.

Cranie has been a decent squad player when needed but I'd expect him to be one where we'd look for an upgrade similar to how Donaldson got sent along to make way for McGoldrick.

Ched's doing enough to make himself a good prospect for a number of clubs but not well enough to make him a realistic one for us. A shame but he really needs to go somewhere he's guaranteed games.

Don't think there's any debate about the others. It's a bit sad that Wright's time at United has ended with him being injured and becoming the forgotten man. Can't for the life of me figure out why he's spent his career at such a low level given what an absolute rock he's been for us. Should've played more Championship football, but another one who's way down the pecking order now and we'd be better off looking for someone better and younger.

Washington and Coutts will get new contracts I think.

Maybe only so we can sell them for decent money, but both are worth having if they hit form.

The contract situation totally changes if we gain promotion.
Assume we’ll not keep a single player as we’ll need to bring in a shed load of better players.

Glad you said it
At least half of the 11 regulars won't be good enough
And signing Madine on a permanent won't be good enough either

If we go up to the premiership then I would hope that we are ruthless and do not offer any of them a new contract. Even Coutts unless he has shown improvement and something in training. We would have a limited number of squad spaces and they on the face of it wouldn't be worth a place in the brave new world of premiership football. Harsh but true.

Irrespective of which division we are in next, I can see us coming to an agreement and moving on or paying off, the other four who still have another year to run (Thomas, Heneghan, Carruthers, and Holmes). We've out grown them and they aren't good enough.

As for the loan players we have at the moment, I would try and keep the lot. Hendo is top class, Dowell could easily grow with us and be elegant enough to cope, whilst the front two (Hogan and Madine) at the right price would be good to have on board. Both are top end championship players and probably good enough for the mini league (bottom third set of teams) in the premiership that we would be up against. Hogan is a goalscorer, would be affordable and importantly is English, whilst Madine would still be an arkward sod for defences in the premiership because of his ability in the air. Obviously if we dont make it then we can't afford them and they go back.

Exciting times though.

If we do go up, which I'm sure we all hope for, where is the investment going to come from for the new strikers and the others we shall need?
We are not going to be able to get by with loans!

Going up would mean some very important decisions, and ones for me could cause us issues moving forward.

I think we're all agreed the current squad would need strengthening, to say the least, for a chance of survival IF we go up. This in turns the players being discussed wouldn't get new contracts. We therefore have to buy a better calibre of player to have a chance of survival. In turn this will vastly inflate our wage bill (for a couple of seasons given the contracts will be 2 / 3 yrs). Admittedly there may be relegation clauses inserted

If we then come back down, despite the parachute payments we're saddled with the higher wage bill.

As much as I'd love us to get promoted and chance our arm against "the big boys" it does worry me the knock on effect it could have.

That said if we managed to survive the 1st season, through careful management it could set the club up for life.

Anyway it's all if's and buts. Given our current situation it's difficult to decide on players contracts until we know for certain what league we'll be in.

I see your point, but I'm with TPL on this one. Whilst Washington is a better option than Ched or Lavery for sure, if he was a Prem striker he'd already be one. I share your doubts that we'd commit to that level of spending, but if we do go up and don't want to be embarassed on a Barnsley level, then we'd have to spend.

Just Coutts; took him a long time to get up to speed after his last injury, another year with option to extend will be money well gambled.

Madine, Hogan, Washington are all one trick (and it's not much of a trick in any of the cases) ponies, not worth it.

Could be a big summer overhaul but keeping the main core of the team together.

Coutts will go in my opinion, he’s been an excellent servant and was absolutely flying pre-injury and Washington is a complete waste of time so he has to go.

Ched might have a bit of value now after a half decent season in League One, he’d be a good signing for one of the promoted teams from League one.

I genuinely believe we’re going up, I can’t wait to see Wilder wheeling and dealing in the prem. Bargains galore.

Not going to be much fun for Blades players reading this lot , i thought our success was built on team spirit ,
I get it you like Ched. Shocked to see Cranie and Washington's names being mentioned to stay, even if we don't go up we have to better our playing squad each year. I get the Coutts new deal comments though.

We shouldn't let Coutts go, but I expect him to leave as he continues to be given no opportunities to play.

My issue is with those under contract players who seem literally impossible to get off our books without paying them.

Is there really nobody who'll pay for the likes of Heneghan, Carruthers and Holmes? Every time it comes to it it's nothing but loans, loans and loans with the odd pay off thrown in.

Heneghan and Carruthers in particular should have never been players we have to give away.

Damn those skint bastards in L1 and Scotland.

Scott Hogan, minutes played for Sheffield United: 0.

Should've scored 12 hattricks, bought the club off McCabe and the Prince and chucked £200m into a club fund, and lowered ticket prices to £5 including free pie and pint by now.

I'm here thinking Washington hasn't really had a fair whack yet and some people are writing Hogan off and all he's done is run up the side of the South stand in a tracksuit haha
