I know it's a team game, I'm not saying he's solely responsible.

The fact is though that he captained that team, therefore had more influence than any other player. The job/expectation for the 11/12, 12/13 and 14/15 seasons was promotion - something which he failed to help deliver.

I give him credit for the FA cup run in the 13/14 season, but he's no different to Jose Baxter in that regard.

I'm sure he's a nice bloke, and he obviously talks the talk as numerous managers have picked him as captain. However, his performances for us came woefully short of the mark, as evidenced by one of the poorest periods of the club's history on the pitch.
He wasn’t the manager though. He couldnt control who we signed and sold. He moved to Portsmouth and captained them to promotion. I’m not sure he’s a nice bloke either, he’s got a nasty streak off the pitch as well as on it but most of his ex managers have praised his leadership qualities. He’s probably just what Notts County need.

Tell me about it, mate. Almost as if we’re all human :D

The Star does a decent job to be fair Danny, and I know our fan base gives the paper some harsh views at times; which I think stem largely from the past, and in particular from the Save our Owls campaign from the 70's, and the lack of similar for us when we went all the way to the 4th, under huge debts. See, it still hurts and I wasn't even born! Ha ha!

I also hadn’t been born at that stage, so I find it a bit baffling that people have held such long-running grudges against a paper whose staff were presumably also not at that paper back then if indeed they were even born. I started watching United in 1990, which has allowed me the freedom over the years to enjoy the Green ‘Un without past grudges, and to not enjoy Keith Edwards whose past achievements I never witnessed.

I know, and I'm not saying he's solely responsible. The manager takes the largest portion of blame but that by no means absolves Doyle: he was the captain, he was a responsible for organising and motivating the team once they were on the pitch.

I like Portsmouth, so I'm glad he helped them, but it doesn't change the fact that he was poor for United. I'm not saying he's not got any leadership qualities; I'm just saying they weren't on show during his spell with us.

Out of interest by the way, what makes you think he's got a nasty streak off the pitch?

Just what I’ve heard. Can’t even remember where, he’s not worth the memory space, I’d almost forgotten about him.

Are you sure you're cut out to be a Blade?

In the 'grudges-r-us' superstore the following spring to mind in no particular order:

CheatinAmmers - obvs
Everton - Segers and the 94 relegation
Mark Ward - early 90s tosspot
Sheffield Council - not allowing Tory Reg to even start to discuss developing the Lane
Supertram (and the Council again) - built to take good honest people from United supporting areas to the Pig
Steve Bruce - walking out on US (and Palace, Wigan x 2 etc etc)
Ken Furphy - couldn't even fit in John Harris's socks, let alone his shoes
Hasalls / Lavers / Woolhouse / Samantha / Reg etc etc - proverbial long pockets and short arms
Mike 'Citeh' McDonald - Put some money in (Deane, Fjiortoft, Hutchinson, Ablett etc) then took it out, before we'd even had a chance to see if it worked
Sarfend - selling us Guthrie
Sarfend - selling us Space Cadet
Sarfend - selling us Lenny
Wendy - Not a grudge so much as an itching sore
DirtyLeeds - Revie bingo/cheating/bribes/Bremner/Hunter/Clarke sacking Clough, seatsmasher fans, Wilko/Strachan/Sterland
CheatinAmmers - can't hurt to mention them twice
FA & honest broker Sir Trev, Scudamore -"It wouldn't be fair on the fans'
The Star - Save our Owls and axing Gloops
Leicester -selling us Alan Young without the wheelchair and administration cheating in 2003
Chelsea - Selling us Finneston without the crutches
Celtic - Letting Jinking Jimmy come and get pissed in Sheffield
Liverpool - The world's most entitled fans. Won 2-1 in the first game back in 1990 and were smug, entitled and generally typical scousers
Curran - Boxing Day obvs. Why the silly twat ran to our Kop withg his arms outstretched when we signed him, beggared belief
Wendy - free ground built for the 66 Wc and then again for the 96 Euros. WTF did we get?
Council/SAG/SYP - pathetic post Hillsborough shutting the barn door late caution, that costs us money

.......and breathe........

I regard professionalism as one's ability to do a job with competence.

In my opinion, Doyle's job was to captain the team to promotion - a job he failed.

Based on what? If he was any good it didnt reflect in our performances on the pitch.

Bizarre view in my opinion. Each to their own.

Maguire and Murphy to name but two were clearly failures in your view then.

Maguire and Murphy were clearly both competent at their jobs, hence why they both earned moves to the PL, so no.

I really miss the Green Un to be fair, but I've never checked the on line version. Re Keith Edwards, or any other past players, I still love Keith Edwards, Tony Currie and countless more, even though I never saw them play because I've read or watched clips of how they played and what they did for us. I started supporting United in 1989 so pretty similar in that regard.

Hope he gets relegated. Terrible footballer. Good at pointing, shouting and flattering to deceive. Not very good at tackling, passing and other skills required in the professional game.
